Track & field: Steeplechase, men’s 800 lead CU Buffs on Day 2 of Pac-12 finals

Colorado logged another pair of podium finishes in the steeplechase, and the Buffaloes’ runners in the men’s 800 made certain it will be a busy finale.

Steeplechase runners Gabrielle Orie and Charles Welch highlighted the second day of the Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field championships for the Buffaloes on Saturday by reaching the podium in their respective races. The Buffs also advanced all three of their runners in the men’s 800 — Ben Greene, Isaiah Givens and Ryan Lindrud — into Sunday’s championship heat.

Orie finished fourth in the women’s steeplechase, finishing in 10 minutes, 4.83 seconds. Welch placed sixth in the men’s steeplechase with a time of 9:02.32.

Greene finished fifth overall in the men’s 800 prelims with a time of 1 minute, 51.70 seconds. Givens (1:51.80) and Lindrud (1:52.28) were immediately behind Greene, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.

It otherwise was a frustrating day for the Buffs, who failed to advance any of their three runners out of the men’s 400 preliminaries and neither of its runners in the women’s 400 prelims.

In field events, CU’s Amanda Opp placed 10th in the women’s hammer throw and Jackson Meyer tied for 10th in the men’s high jump.

It will be a busy final day for the Buffs on Sunday. In addition to the three runners who advanced in the men’s 800, on Friday CU advanced Bailey Hertenstein in the women’s 1,500 and Abbey Glynn in the 400 hurdles. Glynn, from Mead High School, posted the top preliminary time on Friday with a mark of 57.76.

CU also will boast a total of 15 runners in the championships of the men’s and women’s 5K.
