Women’s golf: CU Buffs finish season in 11th place at Pac-12 championship

The Colorado women’s golf team closed the 2022-23 season with an 11th place finish at the Pac-12 Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Wednesday at the Papago Golf Club in Phoenix.

The Buffaloes posted their highest score of the three-round tournament, carding 14-over-par on Wednesday to finish the championship at 33-over, 897.

No. 14 USC ran away with the team title at 15-under, 849, seven strokes better than No. 9 Oregon. Top-ranked Stanford was third at 7-under. No. 29 Arizona, which was tied with USC for the lead after two rounds, fell to fourth at 1-over, after a 9-over final round.

Freshman Morgan Miller was CU’s top golfer in the third round and overall for the tournament. Miller shot 1-over during the final round to finish tied for 25th at 3-over, 219. She secured the Buffaloes’ low 54-hole score for the third time this season.

Sophomore Natalie Vo finished tied for 36th overall at 10-over, 226. Vo was Colorado’s second-best golfer for the championship despite having the team’s high round of the day at 7-over, 79. It was just the third time in 30 starts this season that her round didn’t count toward the team score.

Haylin Harris shot 77 in the final round to tie for 39th overall at 11-over, 227. Senior Issy Simpson finished in a tie for 42nd overall at 12-over, 228. She shot 4-over, 76, in the final round and had Colorado’s best round for a large portion day before some struggles at the end.

Graduate senior Malak Bouraeda finished tied for 51st overall at 19-over, 235. Playing in just her sixth round of the season, Bouraeda had her best round of the championship on Wednesday at 4-over, 76, playing both sides at 2-over.

All three of Colorado’s seniors – Bouraeda, Simpson and Harris – made par on their final collegiate hole on No. 9.

“We just couldn’t get anything going this week,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “We are all disappointed with the finish. We expect more out of ourselves.”

Stanford’s Rose Zhang ran away with the individual title at 12-under, 204, setting tournament records for low 54-hole score and margin of victory. Arizona State’s Beth Coulter was second, seven strokes back at 5-under.
