Fast start pushes CU Buffs women’s lacrosse past Arizona State

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

The Colorado women’s lacrosse team got back on track in the desert.

The Buffaloes bounced back from Friday’s loss at No. 18 USC to handle Arizona State rather handily on the road, topping the Sun Devils 17-13 on Sunday afternoon.

CU (4-5) was swept by Arizona State last year, but with Sunday’s victory the Buffs improved to 3-1 in the Pac-12 Conference. It also was the fourth win in the past five games for CU.

The Buffs received a career-high six goals from attacker Sam McGee, a total that also was the most by any CU player in a game this season. It was the sixth loss in the past seven games for ASU (2-6, 1-2 Pac-12).

The Buffs led 4-0 after the first quarter, getting two goals from Charlie Rudy in the opening frame, and led 8-2 at halftime. The Sun Devils attempted to rally in the third quarter, pulling to within 13-9 going into the fourth, but the Buffs held off ASU down the stretch.

Rudy finished with four goals and an assist, while Ashley Stokes collected three goals and a pair of assists. CU’s Zoe McElhaney recorded three goals and an assist and goalie Grace Donnelly finished with 14 saves.

Rudy has scored at least three goals in eight of nine games this season. The Buffs forced 11 ASU turnovers.

The Buffs continue a run of three consecutive Pac-12 road games on Saturday at Oregon (5 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
