Leah Clayton led the way with 22 and 15 kills, respectively, as the Colorado volleyball team opened up its season with a pair of wins at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday.
The Buffaloes beat Xavier, 3-1, on the neutral court before sweeping host Charlotte by a 3-0 count — thereby gaining some early momentum ahead of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge next weekend.
CU essentially dominated play against both teams, hitting .265 against Xavier in the 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 win and then upping that a notch to .337 overall against Charlotte in a 25-19, 25-7, 25-22 victory. Equally impressive was the front line defense for CU surrendering sub-.200 hitting to both opponents.
Clayton, the sixth-year grad student, went for a double-double against Xavier with 11 digs and also added three blocks. Maya Tabron combined for 25 total kills and 17 total digs on the day, as well.
Playmaker Jenna Ewert led the Buffs with 42 assists in four sets in the morning match and 43 in three sets in the evening event. She also had four combined aces and 14 digs. Brynna DeLuzio led Colorado in both matches in the backrow with 11 and 15 digs, respectfully.
The Buffs return to action next weekend in the annual Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge where they will face Illinois (3-0) and Iowa (0-1) in Champaign, Ill., alongside No.4-ranked Washington.
