CU lacrosse defeats UC Davis

Buffs get record over .500 for first time this season

DAVIS, California — For the first time this season, the Colorado lacrosse team broke the .500 winning percentage after beating UC Davis, 16-13, on the road Friday afternoon in Davis, Calif.

The Buffaloes held on after holding an 11-6 lead at the half, improving to 6-5 on the season behind Sadie Grozier’s six points (four goals, two assists), Charlie Rudy’s four goals and Zoe Lawless’s three markers.

The Aggies replaced Stanford on the schedule for CU, after COVID-19 concerns popped up with the Cardinal.

“Thank you to UC Davis for hosting us on short notice,” Colorado head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. “Every opportunity we get to play this year is special. It was a hard fought game on both ends today. We knew it was going to be going in and we were able to make enough plays down stretch to get it done.

“I’m proud of the grit we had towards the end as the game got close, the ability to dig down and make a play.”

The Aggies (7-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Buffaloes were able to answer with a pair of goals from Grozier in the same minute to bring CU within one just four minutes into the contest.

A 4-0 run from the Buffs got the visitors going, and another 5-0 scoring run built an 11-5 lead. Although the Aggies got to within 15-13, Morgan Pence’s goal with 4:31 left in the game turned out to provide the final score.

Goalie Julia Lisella made six saves for CU, who will play at California on Sunday in Berkeley (3 p.m. MT)
