Three Colorado women’s basketball players have put their names in the NCAA transfer portal.
CU head coach JR Payne told BuffZone.com that sophomores Madison Buford, Raanee Smith, and Zuzanna Kulinksa are all looking for opportunities to play elsewhere.
“For all three, it’s strictly a playing time thing,” Payne said. “They love Colorado, they love their coaches, their teammates, their experience; it’s all good, it’s just we didn’t see their role changing dramatically.”
Buford, a 5-foot-9 guard from St. Louis, joined the Buffs this year as a transfer from Rend Lake (Ill.) Community College and averaged 1.2 points and 5.5 minutes in 13 games this season.
Kulinska, a 5-10 guard from Poland, gave the Buffs a spark off the bench, averaging 2.0 points and hitting 51.9 percent of her shots in 8.6 minutes per game. She played in 37 games during two seasons with the Buffs.
Smith, a 6-2 forward from Philadelphia, played 46 minutes in 16 games over the past two years. She played eight minutes over three games this year.
“You work your entire life to have an opportunity to play and they deserve to play, to try to find an all-encompassing basketball experience,” Payne said. “We’re talking to coaches and programs and trying to help them sort of navigating the process and help them find somewhere they have a real opportunity to play, but also are going to be around good people.”
CU has three open scholarships for next season and Payne said the Buffs are scouting junior college and four-year transfers, hoping to add a guard and post players.
“We could sign three,” she said. “I don’t know if we will, but we want to make sure that they are impact players, people that can come in and contribute and fill a need.”
