BERKELEY, Calif. — Despite being outshot, 18-11, and only netting three shots on goal, the Colorado soccer team nabbed their first Pac-12 Conference win of the season Friday afternoon by downing 10th-ranked California, 2-1, on the road in Berkeley.
Hannah Sharts tallied her third goal of the season in the 44th minute, and the Buffaloes (4-1-1, 1-0-1 Pac-12) managed to add to their lead in the 73rd minute when Shanade Hopcroft got on the board with her first goal of the year. Cal scored with just about 10 minutes left in the game to trim the CU lead back down to 2-1, but the Buffs tightened up on defense and staved off a few offensive opportunities down the stretch for the hosts.
Colorado’s offense was much more prevalent in the first half of play, as the Buffs equaled Cal (2-1-0, 1-1-0) in shots taken with eight and bettered their counterparts by netting one of those chances.
Cal ramped things up in the second half and had four corner kick chances, but CU managed to snuff those out with no damage done. Hopcroft’s goal came rather suddenly, after a run of about five minutes where Cal was putting tremendous pressure on the CU defense.
Goalie Dani Hansen made one of her three saves in the 77th minute, but could not stop Collins’ shot in the 80th. While possession still remained with Cal for much of the final 10 minutes, the Golden Bears did not register another shot clean or otherwise, and the Buffs wrapped up their first win over a ranked team this season.
The Buffs will face another ranked team on Sunday, as they hit Palo Alto for a match against No. 23 Stanford (1 p.m. MT).
