Jarek Broussard continues making history for the Colorado Buffaloes.

In Saturday’s 20-10 win against San Diego State at Folsom Field, the sophomore running back finished with 124 rushing yards on 32 carries.

Broussard is just the second player in CU history to rush for 100-plus yards in the first three games of his career, joining Charlie Davis in 1971.

“I love the game of football a lot and it’s something I really take very seriously. Every time I step on the field, I just try to make the most of every opportunity.

Broussard has 432 yards so far this season and it didn’t come easy against an Aztecs defense that came in ranking seventh nationally against the run. SDSU was allowing only 90 yards per game on the ground.

“It got kind of tough towards the end, but we just played against a good team,” he said.

Broussard had some big runs, including 19 and 16 yards early, but had minus-11 yards on his last six carries, as the Aztecs keyed on him.

Delayed kickoff

CU and SDSU were supposed to kick off at 3:07 p.m., but that was delayed until 3:37 p.m. because the Aztecs were waiting for the results of COVID-19 tests.

“They said one person was positive, but it didn’t seem like it was going to affect the ruling of having 53 scholarship players and the minimum of players that would be able to play,” CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. “The circumstances that we knew, we felt that the game was going to be played.”

SDSU got to the stadium late but was healthy enough to play. After having its game against Arizona State canceled last week, Dorrell was pleased to get the game in.

“Because we were off last week, to miss another week would have been, I think, a little bit more difficult to deal with,” he said. “I didn’t like the aspects of how we had to learn to do this in a day’s time, but it was still good to play and our players were excited about playing. I thought they played with a lot of energy today.

“This COVID thing is so unpredictable, it’s a day to day process. Anything can happen in any given day, so I think our players have been outstanding with keeping our health.”

Nixon back

Senior receiver KD Nixon made his season debut after the missing the first two games with a hamstring injury. He finished with four catches for 26 yards.

“It’s awesome,” quarterback Sam Noyer said of having Nixon back. “We have guys all around us. It’s great to have everybody back. I think we’ll have Daniel (Arias) back next week and we’ll get some other guys going and things will be good again.”

A starter in the first two games, Arias did not play for undisclosed reasons.
