Shelley Sheetz

Colorado women’s basketball great Shelley Sheetz is returning to the state.

On Thursday, University of Denver women’s basketball head coach Doshia Woods announced three staff additions, including Sheetz as the top assistant coach for the Pioneers.

Sheetz, the only first-team Associated Press All-American in CU history, spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Loyola-Maryland.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be joining Doshia’s staff,” Sheetz said to DenverPioneers.com. “She is well-respected in the basketball community, and I am honored and very grateful to be a part of her staff.”

This will be Sheetz’s second stint at DU, as she coached the Pioneers as an assistant from 2008-12. After her first stint at DU, she coached three years at Boston College.

Inducted to the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, Sheetz was an All-American in 1994-95, leading the Buffs to a 30-3 record and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Sheetz, who played at CU from 1991-95, ranks fifth in Buffs’ history in points (1,775), third in assists (514) and second in steals (287). She is the only player in CU history with 1,700 points and 500 assists.

Woods, hired last month by the Pioneers, also named Lindsay Werntz and David Pennewell as assistant coaches.
