CU Buffs record three top-10 marks on first day of Potts Invitational

The University of Colorado track and field program opened the 2020 calendar year with three new entries in the CU top-10 record books, led by sophomore high jumper Jeremy Cody’s victory and personal best 2.12 meters (6-11.5) at the Potts Invitational.

Cody capped off a stellar opening performance after winning the meet on his second clearance of the day at 2.06m (6-9) then immediately putting the bar at 2.12 meters (6-11.5), exactly one centimeter better than his best performance last season. The sophomore cleared the bar on his first attempt and pushed the bar to the 2.15 meters, the A standard for the USATF Indoor Championships this season, where he missed all his attempts. The mark moves him into eighth in school history.

The other two top-10 marks came from a pair of freshmen in the women’s weight throw. Gya’ni Sami led the Buffaloes with a third-place finish at 16.30m (53-5.75), improving her eighth-best mark in school history by more than seven inches. Jane Powers jumped into the top-10 one spot behind Sami with a toss of 15.56 meters (51-0.75), good for fourth overall.

Colorado also had the highest collegiate finisher in two more events with Cheyenne Cheshier winning the women’s triple jump in 11.55 meters (37-10.75) and Tyler Sconce placing second in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 17.28 meters (56-8.5), nearly a two-meter improvement. Sconce was second to Caleb Penner who competed unattached and won the event in a toss of 17.38m (57-0.25), just three-quarters of an inch from tying the 10th-best mark in school history.

The Buffs also had strong showings in the men’s pole vault and women’s high jump. Wyatt Rhoads placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 4.25 meters (13-11.25) while teammate Davis Butte was fifth with the same mark. Kylee Harr and Avery McMullen went 3-5 in the women’s high jump, both clearing 1.66 meters (5-5.25).
