Women’s basketball: CU Buffs top Xavier, remain unbeaten

Emma Clarke, Mya Hollingshed lead Buffaloes to road win

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

Turnovers continue to plague the Colorado women’s basketball team.

The Buffaloes continue to win despite them, however.

On Friday night, CU overcame a season high in turnovers to knock off Xavier, 62-53, at Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Sophomore Emma Clarke scored a career-high 19 points and junior Mya Hollingshed recorded her second consecutive double-double to keep the Buffs (8-0) undefeated.

CU’s 28 turnovers were its most in a game since having 28 against UCLA on Feb. 6, 2015. The Buffs came into the night averaging a Pac-12 high 17.9 turnovers per game and they have now had at least 20 in three of their last four games.

Against Xavier (1-6), the Buffs had 16 of their turnovers in the first half and trailed 29-25 just 30 seconds into the second half.

Hollingshed then hit a layup to spark a 13-0 run that gave the Buffs a 38-29 lead. They never trailed again and led by as many as 16 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Hollingshed finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds – tying her career high in boards for the second game in a row. She had eight of her points in the pivotal third quarter and 11 of her points after halftime.

Clarke, who had a career-high 17 points in Tuesday’s win against Texas Southern, topped that mark with 19 against the Musketeers. She scored the Buffs’ first 11 points of the fourth quarter to help them extend their lead.

A 6-foot-1 sophomore wing, Clarke has averaged 16.7 points in the past three games, hitting 50 percent (19-of-38) of her shots.

Peanut Tuitele came off the bench to add 10 points and five rebounds for the Buffs. It was Tuitele’s first double-digit scoring game since having 10 points in the season opener.

Freshman point guard Jaylyn Sherrod added eight points and seven assists for the Buffs.

Fast break

What went right: As usual, the Buffs were solid on defense, dominated in rebounding (42-29) and shot the ball well (46.2 percent).

What went wrong: CU finished with a whopping 28 turnovers – their most in a game in nearly 5 years. That led to 22 Xavier points, keeping the Musketeers in the game most of the night.

Star of the game: Emma Clarke. She posted a career-high 19 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.

What’s next: CU hosts Denver on Thursday at 7 p.m.
