Jaylyn Sherrod sparks CU Buffs in win against Regis

Freshman point guard scores 18 points in exhibition victory

Last month, when Colorado freshman point guard Jaylyn Sherrod was asked about the strength of her game, she didn’t hesitate.

“Energy,” she said. “Just straight energy.”

She wasn’t lying. On Monday night, Sherrod had a sensational debut in the CU women’s basketball team’s 92-45 victory against Regis in an exhibition game at CU Events Center.

Coming off the bench, Sherrod posted 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and only one turnover in 22 minutes for the new-look Buffs.

“If I don’t do my job, I let my team down and my job is energy,” Sherrod said. “So bringing that to the team every day, every night is what I pride myself on.”

Sherrod played just eight games as a senior at Ramsay (Ala.) High School, so this was her first game action in a while.

“When I first started, I was kind of nervous,” she said. “It was just good to get out there and play, being that I haven’t played in a minute, even going back to high school. So it’s just a good opportunity and a good chance to get back out there.”

It had also been a while for sophomore Aubrey Knight, who played in just three games a year ago before having season-ending shoulder surgery. She posted a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

“It was amazing,” she said. “I was also pretty nervous considering I haven’t played in basically a year, but I think that I have a fire set under me this year and I just can’t take it for granted at all. This season I’m really going to just try to play as hard as I can every single game because you never know when it can be your last one and I kind of felt that last year and so just can’t take it for granted anymore.”

For the Buffs, it was their first game since losing starting guards Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson to graduation. While it was just an exhibition, head coach JR Payne got her first look at a new roster.

In addition to Sherrod and Knight, starting point guard Sila Finau posted seven points, six rebounds and three assists; wing Emma Clarke had nine points, four rebounds and three assists; and forwards Mya Hollingshed (11 points) and Annika Jank (10) both scored in double figures. All 12 Buffs who played scored.

“I’m just thrilled with our effort tonight,” Payne said. “I thought we played extremely hard. We want to be the toughest, hardest working, most disciplined team and I thought in a lot of ways we were that team tonight.

“There’s nothing like playing … in front of people and it’s great for young players to get that experience because we do have jitters and that’s natural and normal. I always think it’s fun to put on a real uniform and get out and play and that was good for them.”

Next up for the Buffs is their first official test. They open the season on Sunday against NJIT.

“I think we’re definitely ready to play for real,” Payne said. “I see so many areas that we want to get better and I think that we can definitely improve. But we’re ready to compete. Our team is competitive, our team is scrappy, our team wants to play and we’re excited for the season to get going.”
