That will do it for this week everybody! Thanks for great comments and questions. I forget how busy this chat gets during the season! haha. Enjoy the game this week and we'll do this again next Monday! There's been a lot of concern the past few years about CSU's passing game and talented receivers, yet the Rams haven't been able to score on CU. This year, the Rams aren't as good at WR. I just don't think CSU is very good. Maybe I'm wrong and it'll be that high scoring affair!Hi Brian, thanks for the chats and rewind, good stuff.i'm a little concerned about the CSU matchups: csu receivers/QB vs. CU's secondary, can the pass rush help, ditto for stuffing the run game but i'm not yet confident in our down 3. those are my keys on D. for the O, CU seems to have a speed/skill advantage over the CSU defense. thus, a high-scoring game? say 41-33 or so? thanks. Thanks! No word yet in tickets. Hopefully later today. Season tickets, I think those are good numbers. CU expects that to go up a bit more. It's rare that season tickets at CU increase with a first-year coach, so this is a positive sign. As for Stenstrom, yes, I think he's had a good camp. Hopefully he keeps progressing! Thanks Brian for your indefatigable coverage and hopefully you find some time at home- any thoughts about tickets sold by CSU and CU for RMS. Saw our season tix sales are about 800 ahead, which is disappointing given our schedule, but understandable with the losing records. Second question- Stenstrom must be acquitting well- any thoughts? Thanks againLast year he was their offense, though. I think they'll adapt as he gets older. But, he's a talented kid, and you want the ball in his hands.I don't want to see Martinez hurt either. However, Frost was running him far too much. For UCF, they played smaller teams and won with speed and RPO with heavy QB running. You can't do that in the Pac-12. These boys are bigger and you will eventually get your QB hurt. I could see this happen again versus CU.No, I don't think it will. I think the coaches are setting up the offense to where they can adjust to things like that if needed, but they've got ways to keep the ball somewhat dry so they can still pass.Brian - Seeing a chance for rain on Friday - do you think that changes our game plan at all? Fans are so enamored with our Senior QB and stocked WR core, but seems like the coaches are big on ground & pound.Yep. he was a WR in high school and asked Tucker to switch to WR in spring. Not sure why he thought he could break into the rotation here. But, if his heart wasn't in DB, good for him in finding a spot to play WR.Blackmon wanted to play WR ??? he could not catch punts HA , I like that they have had players switch in training camp instead into the season at least it gives them fighting chance to learn the postions should they be neededHa! Thanks! ... there are some aspects of Neill's access I wish I had, but I'm OK not seeing EVERY practice. Yeah, I'd like to see a few of them, but I don't think I'd want every practice to be open. I think that would get old standing there watching for 3 hours a day, 6 days a week.Appreciate all the good work you have been putting out, the Monday Rewind, providing some great insights. I continued to be impressed with how much you and Adam can glean being limited from seeing practices. Just out of human curiosity, how envious or not, are you of Neil Woelk’s access? If he were to retire tomorrow, how fast would you be to submit a job application (personal question involving your livelihood, so totally respect if you rather not say)? Thanks!I'll just say that Hypolite didn't follow some basic rules. Yes, he would have been a major contributor, but Tucker has to lay down the law, especially as he's getting going.Any insight you are comfortable sharing regarding what likely caused Hypolite’s dismissal? I believe he ended up at Houston? I think he would have been a major contributor for the Buffs if he was in Boulder this year! And, gotta respect Tucker for adhering to his principles.Thank you! I agree with that assessment, I think it will be entertaining and frustrating at times. And, I agree that I don't think Tucker's teams will beat themselves. Maybe they will a bit this year as they get going, but down the road, I think it happens less. As for the shirts, I assume so. Anyone know?I am also enjoying your coverage as usual. I like the Monday rewinds a lot. I am looking forward to seeing my first RMSD in person. I believe this season will be very entertaining and also frustrating. But I don't think we lose games in the same fashion we did under Macintyre. I just don't see Tucker letting this team beat themselves ( second half meltdowns and dumb penalties) and I feel they will be a much more mentally strong team.Quick question does anyone know if they sell any RMSD shirts at the stadium for this game? That would probably help, but I never root for injuries. I'd rather watch Martinez play. He's a talented kid and I'd love to watch him play.Knock Martinez out of the game like last yr......problem solvedI think they are the home team, but I don't know the uniform combo. I would guess they wear classic vs. Nebraska.Isn’t CU the home team for the RMS game this week? Has the uniform combo been announced yet? Also, I hope the Buffs are saving their classic uniform for the Nebraska game.Right now, I think it's 5: Wigley, Wallace, Blackmon, George and Hypolite (who was dismissed). Aside from hypolite, I think most of those guys saw that they wouldn't play. Ronnie Blackmon wanted to play receiver, Tucker said no, and so he left. Now he's playing WR at Toledo. The other three weren't going to play much, if at all, and they probably knew that.6 dB’s leave ? Wow, I didn’t realize it was that many. Why do you think so many from one position ? Did tucker say “I’m starting over ?”there you go!Just win Buffs !!I don't know how long he'll be out. But, it's hard to say where he'll fall on the depth chart upon his return. That depends on his work, and how that group is looking.Do you have any idea how long Udoffia will be away from the team? Where do you expect him to fall on the safety depth chart once he does return? That's an optimistic look at the season, for sure. We've had promises of high-powered CU offenses a lot in recent years, though, and it's never happened. I gotta see it before I believe they can be that type of offense.I think the O protects the D scores enough to turn the other teams O into only passing and the CU pass rush is able to tee offWashington is on a bit of a different level than CU, though. The weather was horrendous in Pullman two years ago and CU was awful. I think if they're in Pullman and sitting at, say, 3-3, and the weather is awful, CU has little shot.I think we have a chance against WSU if it snows....just like the WSU vs WU last year.As a Buffs fan, you would hope!I think the Buffs smoke CSU...but I have visions of Martinez running around the next week like K. Tate did two years ago. Hopefully Mr. SEC defensive coordinator turned head coach can solve that !Thanks! No, he didn't put a number on it, but it's likely to be 3 captains during game weeks, and I would guess it's 3 for the season.Brian, thanks for another great Monday Rewind....lots of great additional coverage and insights! Thanks for digging into Tucker’s philosophy regarding Captains this year. Did you get a sense for how many “Season Captains” the team will vote on and be named at the end of the season? That's my thought going into the year, anyway. Like I said, though, better to judge them after we see what they do during a season.Hard to say without really seeing these guys go through a season. But, I think Johnson is an upgrade over Chev as OC/play-caller, because he's got more experience. OL, I liked Adams, but Kapilovic is really good, so that's an upgrade. DL, I think Brumbaugh is good, but Drake is a rising star in my opinion, so that's a step back. Tillman really replaces Ambrose, not Brown. I'd say that's a wash. Summers replaces Elliott/Brown and I think overall its an upgrade because the players are more bought into summers. But, I think Elliott did a nice job here. TE, I think Pupunu is an upgrade. How would you grade each position coach versus the prior staff. OC - Johnson seems like upgrade over Chiv DC Summers seems a little worse resume then Eliot. QB - Missing Roper hurts. WR - Still Chiv OL - Chris Kapilovic is a huge upgrade imo. TE Seems like a wash DL - Kwhan Drake was good, but Brumbaugh has pretty good resume. Slight nod to Drake LB Still Els DB Shadon Brown much better then TillmanFrom what I am told, they expect Udoffia to be back at some point. If he doesn't return, I believe it's 6 DBs that were supposed to be here this year that did not return.do you think Trey Udoffia will be back this year? If not, how many db's does that make that have left the team?yes, Tucker is more open and honest with us after practice. Broncos do have several open practices during training camp.It seems like Tucker does yet have the tinfoil hat that Mac had. Seems more open and honest but still with the closed practice , do the broncos have open practices during training camp at least?Should be a fun game!Already looking to the Big Red game. For other fans I see NU has come out with their first depth chart of the season. For those interested:huskers.comit's a big team, for sure. Bigger than we've seen in recent years with so many OL playing at 265-280.Looking at the depth chart the Buffs look like a BIG team; esp. the lines. 300+ all of the O-line and much of the d-line. Is this one of the bigger Buffs teams you've seen in recent years? Looks like it on paper.I would say he has fewer touches per game, but maybe the same number of overall touches. Remember he missed 3 games, so instead of averaging 11.4 touches, I'd say he's closer to 9.5 or 10.Viska will have less touches and yards than last year true or false? As far as I know he's healthy and should play. What is MIller's status? How likely are we to see him against CSU?Well this is an "OR" between Lytle and Stenstrom for backup QB on the depth chart. I believe it's Lytle, though. With Noyer moving to safety, does that put Lytle in as the clear #2 and starting QB for 2020?Could be Friday! How long until Mangham becomes the featured back and the Buffs running game is called 'Mangham Style"?I didn't watch all of it, but yes, I was surprised they looked that bad. I'm not too surprised on defense, though. There was this assumption that Arizona was going to be a lot better on defense because they returned almost everybody, but those are the same kids that gave up 32.6 points per game last year. Arizona hasn't played defense in several years. Tate's not a great thrower, either. I've never been high on Arizona having a good year.Did you watch the Arizona-Hawaii game? My god AZ looked bad! I know it's the first game and a really young team but their d-line got no sacks and can't tackle, their secondary was terrible, their WRs didn't know the simple "scramble" drill and dropped balls and didn't get a foot in on sideline catches and they simply look like they lack toughness and fundamentals. It was surprsing. Plus, their FG unit had three straight penalties turning a 38 yard FG attempt into a 53 yard one and they even had to burn their last TO to get it off and then didn't have it in their final drive in which they could have tied the game. Bad coaching. Really surprised as this is Sumlin's second year.I like the confidence!I'm thinking the Buffs will light up the Rams with their passing game early and then turn to the running game to give those young backs a chance to flash. CU 41 - 13.I certainly could envision a scenario like that, other than the upset of Washington or Utah. If the Buffs are sputtering like that, no way they beat those teams.I hate to say it, but I agree with Pat Rooney's column and outlook on the season. I'm very impressed with Tucker thus far, and while I am excited about the longterm prospects for his defensive system, I feel like there will be a lot of growing pains and missed assignments early in the season as players get a feel for it. Unfortunately I think this costs us a 48-38 type shootout against Nebraska. I expect the defense to improve schematically over the course of the season, unfortunately as the season drags on I expect the lack of depth on the D-line and secondary to start rearing its head. As such I think the defense never reaches it's full potential this season and the offense doesn't do quite enough to clear 4/5 wins. That said, I feel like improved defensive discipline late in the season gets us an upset over Washington or Utah and, despite a disappointing 4/5 wins, we start drinking the 2020 koolaid in December. Now, that idea I can get behind. We’re not burning Brian’s eligibility for safetyCorner, yesI answered this earlier, but he's playing and just down on the depth chart at inside linebacker. gotta keep in mind, he's still young. He's only a redshirt freshman, so he's got plenty of time to develop and get into the mix down the road. What's up with Ray Robinson? It's not bad. They have the closed air tight windows, so you don't get a feel for the atmosphere as much, but it's fine. I've covered enough games in that stadium I don't really think about that part of it too much. But, I am looking forward to the games on campusHow is the experience for a journalist at the RMSD? Personally, I've always preferred they play at Folsom and Hughs/Canvas Stadium. As far as I know, Johnson is very good about taking input from all the coaches, but it'll be Johnson calling the offense. How much say will Chiv have in the offense this year? Is it strictly Jay Johnsons show? We've heard his name a bit. he's in the mix at inside linebacker, but he's certainly a young guy and not as far along as some veterans.A name that seems to have gone silent is Marvin Ham. Whats the deal with him this camp?I don't know if mental toughness is worth that many games. It might flip a game - MAYBE 2 - but you gotta have players. Do the Buffs have enough on defense? I just don't know that right now. You gotta have players to beat Oregon, Washington State, USC, Stanford, Washington, Utah.Despite Rooney's doom and Gloom, I feel like mental toughness is worth at least 3 extra wins and flip the the script and go 8-4 and maybe the hoilday bowlI don't know when that will debut for sure, but CU video always does a great job. I'm sure it'll be another good series! Happy to do the updates! thanks for the kind words I saw a trailer for a "Relentless" film by CU Video. Any idea when that is dropping? Thanks for the daily updates with you and Adam and keeping us all informed! We're itching for football over here!I don't know for a fact, but I'm sure they have. Coach Tucker has been everywhere and McCartney lives in town. I'm sure they've had some conversations. I know Tucker and Barnett have developed a solid relationship already.
