Former CU Buffs star Derrick White named to USA Basketball Select

Spurs guard Derrick White has made a career out of overcoming obstacles and making the most of whatever opportunities come his way.

Derrick White, San Antonio Spurs point guard, former CU Buffs star and Parker native, has been selected to join the USA Basketball Select Team, USA Basketball announced Thursday.

The 13-man team will be coached by Jeff Van Gundy and train Aug. 5-8 at UNLV’s Mendenhall Center with Team USA. White will be joined by Jarrett Allen (Nets), Marvin Bagley III (Kings), Mikal Bridges (Suns), Jalen Brunson (Mavericks), John Collins (Hawks), Pat Connaughton (Bucks), De’Aaron Fox (Kings), Joe Harris (Nets), Jonathan Isaac (Magic), Mitchell Robinson (Knicks), Landry Shamet (Clippers) and Trae Young (Hawks).

White was a member of the Team USA’s World Cup qualifying team, where he started both games and averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals. The former CU Buffs star averaged 9.9 points, 3.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 25.8 minutes per game for the Spurs last season.

Team USA and the Select Team will participate in the USA Blue versus USA White exhibition game at 8 p.m. Aug. 9 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
