Former Colorado women’s basketball player Kennedy Leonard has found a home for her professional career.

CU announced Thursday that Leonard has signed a contract to play with Herner TC in Germany next season, which begins in September.

“I’m incredibly excited and humbled to have an opportunity to play on the best team in Germany in one of the top leagues in the world,” Leonard said in a CU press release. “Playing professionally has been a goal of mine since I can remember. I’m very thankful for this opportunity.”

Herner TC plays in the Bundesliga, the top level in Germany. Last year, the team went 18-2 and won the league title.

“(Leonard) has worked her entire life for this opportunity and will undoubtedly leave her mark the same way she did here at CU,” Buffs head coach JR Payne said.

Leonard completed her career at CU in March and left the program as the all-time leader in assists, with 664. She was also seventh in scoring (1,635 points) and top-10 in several other categories.

“I’m thankful for the opportunities that Colorado gave me,” she said. “I’m excited to grow my game in a different culture and country.”

Leonard has dual citizenship in the United States and Great Britain and was recently selected to represent Great Britain in the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket tournament, which starts later this month.
