The 22nd-ranked Colorado lacrosse team on Friday fell for just the second time in Pac-12 Conference play this season, hanging tough with No. 18 Stanford through regulation before seeing the Cardinal find a golden goal in overtime for a 13-12 victory at Kittredge Field.

Samantha Nemirov scored seven points, and Miranda Stinson added three goals for CU (7-6 overall, 6-2 Pac-12), but it was the Cardinal’s Katherine Gjertsen who secured Stanford’s road victory with a goal with just 3 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the extra period of play.

Stanford improved to 10-4 and 5-3 in Pac-12 play.

“This game was huge for us so losing was unfortunate,” CU head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. “Now the only thing we are worried about is Sunday. We know how important that game is and there is going to be no distractions. We got to focus on taking care of business and coming out harder than we came out today.

“We are fighting for positioning in the Pac-12 every team is great, and every team is a game that we need to win. For us right now our backs are against the wall and we are used to being in that position, we got to respond.”

It was a back-and-forth contest throughout, but the Buffs held an 11-7 lead with 10:26 left in the second half before Stanford rallied with five straight goals.

With just under a minute remaining in regulation Stinson capitalized on a free-position attempt to level the score at 12-12 and send the game into overtime.

Stinson controlled the opening draw of the overtime period, but the Buffs failed to generate a scoring chance on the offensive end. After regaining possession, Stanford scored the game-winning goal 2:55 into overtime.

The Buffs return to Kittredge Field to face California on Sunday at 3 p.m.
