Guards Peyton Carter and Mathilde Diop will not return to the Colorado women’s basketball team next season.
Buffaloes head coach JR Payne said that Carter will enter the NCAA transfer portal, while Diop will pursue a professional career.
Carter, a sophomore from Monarch High School, appeared in 41 games, with one start, during the past two years. She averaged 2.8 points in 7.8 minutes per game as a freshman, but saw those numbers drop to 0.9 points and 4.2 minutes per game this past season.
“She knows she wants to play and have a real opportunity to contribute,” Payne said. “We’re helping her (find a new school) and making calls.”
A 2017 graduate of Monarch High School, Carter was an all-conference and all-state performer, averaging 15.8 points and 3.5 assists per game as a senior with the Coyotes.
Diop recently completed her junior season and her second year with the Buffs after transferring from Arizona Western College. A 6-foot-2 guard, she appeared in 49 games, with one start, for the Buffs, averaging 9.8 minutes and 1.2 points per game.
Diop is a native of Dakar, Senegal, and graduated from high school in France.
“She wants to play professionally and go home to France, where she has a lot of connections,” Payne said.
With Carter and Diop leaving, the Buffs have three open scholarships for the 2019-20 season. The NCAA allows 15 scholarship players in women’s basketball.
CU has nine players slated to return next season, including freshman Charlotte Whittaker, who arrived on campus in January and redshirted. The Buffs have three other freshmen signed and slated to join the team in July.
Payne said the Buffs’ staff is actively recruiting to fill out the roster, but won’t necessarily fill all three open spots.
