Broomfield’s Hailey Stodden pushes Utah past No. 21 CU soccer

A stunning homecoming performance ruined Senior Day for the Colorado women’s soccer team and made the Buffaloes’ wait before Monday’s NCAA Tournament selection show a little less secure.

Utah used a goal from Broomfield native Hailey Stodden in the 11th minute to edge the 21st-ranked Buffaloes 1-0 in the regular season finale Friday at Prentup Field. After starting the season with a program-record 16-game unbeaten streak, the Buffs close the regular season with a four-game losing streak. CU was shut out in three of those losses despite compiling a team-record 47 goals.

The Buffs began the week at No. 39 in the RPI and likely will drop after Friday’s defeat, but barring a rash of upsets in conference championship matches across the nation, CU should still be in line for its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the program’s fifth in six seasons. The defeat dims CU’s chances of hosting for next week’s opening two rounds.

It was the Utes’ first win on the road against a ranked opponent since 2007 and their first win in Boulder after going 0-4-2.

Stodden, a repeat winner of the girls soccer Player of the Year award in 2018 and 2017, was a prolific goal-scorer for the Broomfield Eagles but has started every game of her freshman season at Utah as a defender. She entered Friday’s match with just one assist on her scoring ledger, but she converted the game’s only goal after a collision between charging Utes player Makayla Christensen and CU goalie JJ Tompkins left Stodden with a wide-open rebound chance.

The Buffs launched 10 shots on goal but couldn’t get one past Utah goalie Carly Nelson, who posted her eighth solo shutout of the season.

The loss dropped CU to fifth in the Pac-12 Conference, and the Buffs could drop further depending on results around the league on Friday night, coupled with No. 1 Stanford’s Sunday visit to Arizona State.

The NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday afternoon begins at 2:30 p.m. MT.
