Junior libero Rachel Whipple has turned in a solid start for the Colorado Buffaloes volleyball team heading into the 2018 Colorado Classic.

The Colorado volleyball team continues a six-game homestand this weekend by hosting the Colorado Classic at the CU Events Center. The Buffaloes take on Portland State Friday night before two matches on Saturday culminating in a rivalry showdown against Colorado State. A look at the Colorado Classic:

Records: Portalnd State 1-8; CU 5-3.

Notes: On Saturday the Buffs host Indiana State (10 a.m.) and Colorado State (8 p.m.)…In other games at the Events Center on Saturday, CSU takes on Portland State at noon, with Indiana State and Portland State squaring off at 6 p.m…CU is unranked for the first time this season…Junior Rachel Whipple has taken over the Buffs’ primary defensive specialist/libero role and leads CU with 104 digs. Whipple recorded 122 digs the entire 2017 season…The Buffs have played the entire season without standout middle blocker Naghede Abu, who has been sidelined due to an undisclosed injury…CU is 1-1 against Portland State, winning at home in 2014 and losing a five-set showdown at Portland State two years ago…Heading into Saturday night’s rivalry showdown, CSU leads the series 23-13, though the Buffs have won the past two matches after snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Rams…CU begins Pac-12 Conference play next week with home games against Utah and USC…Due to the 3 p.m. football game Saturday, fans heading to the Saturday night session must access the Events Center garage via Broadway and Regent Drive.
