Colorado head football coach Mike MacIntyre has awarded scholarships to three walk-ons.
During a scrimmage at Folsom Field on Friday night, MacIntyre announced to the team that senior safety Daniel Talley, junior kicker Davis Price and redshirt freshman Brady Russell have been put on scholarship.
The scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but CU posted a video on Twitter. In the video, MacIntyre said to the team, “One of my favorite things to do, that I love to do, is what I’m fixing to do. Watch the screen.”
The team then watched the video board at Folsom Field, as it played clips of Talley, Price and Russell. The team celebrated as each new scholarship player was revealed.
Price, from Evergreen High School, was a part-time place-kicker in 2016 and the kickoff specialist in 2017. He’s expected to be the kickoff specialist again this season.
Talley has been a valuable backup in the secondary at safety and Buff back throughout his career, while also excelling on special teams. A graduate of Regis High School, Talley began his career at CSU-Pueblo before transferring to CU in 2016.
Russell, from Fossil Ridge High School, has had a great camp at tight end and has been praised several times by coaches and teammates. He was the team’s offensive scout team player of the year in 2017. Russell is the nephew of former CU great Matt Russell.
CU went into fall camp with 83 scholarship players, two below the NCAA maximum of 85. A third scholarship recently opened up when senior safety Jaisen Sanchez decided to medically retire. Sanchez suffered a season-ending injury over the summer, and has missed each of the previous two seasons with injuries.
