Former national champ Jana Weinberger takes over CU Buffs Nordic program

The University of Colorado didn’t look far to find the ski program’s new head Nordic coach.

On Tuesday, longtime assistant coach and former Buffaloes national champion Jana Weinberger was named CU’s new Nordic coach. She replaces Bruce Cranmer, who earlier this summer announced his retirement (effective July 1) after 18 years. Weinberger has been an assistant on the Buffs’ staff for 11 years. A search for her replacement as an assistant coach is underway.

During her time as an assistant, Weinberger helped CU finish first or second in Nordic points eight times at the NCAA championships. The Buffs led the Nordic points race in 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2015. With Weinberger and Cranmer directing the Nordic program, eight different CU skiers combined to win 14 individual NCAA titles.

As a skier at CU, Weinberger posted 27 top-10 finishes and 23 top-five finishes. She helped lead CU to the 2006 national title by winning the individual championships in the Nordic freestyle and classical events. She graduated in 2006 with a degree in international affairs.

“I am very excited to start the season as Nordic head coach,” Weinberger said in a statement. “We have incredible athletes and I look forward to working with them and helping them to become better skiers. I have been a Buff in a different capacity since 2003 (athlete, assistant coach, head coach), this position carries lot of responsibility and I will do my best to carry on success of the CU ski team.”
