Derrick White still is awaiting a more expansive opportunity with the San Antonio Spurs.
In the meantime, the former Colorado Buffaloes star is making certain to take advantage of the opportunities at hand.
Following a season in which White grew familiar with the shuttle between San Antonio and Austin, home of the Spurs’ G-League affiliate, White opened the Utah portion NBA Summer League Monday night with a solid all-around performance, scoring 22 points with seven rebounds and six assists in a 92-76 loss against the Utah Jazz. White went 9-for-21 from the field with a 3-for-9 mark on 3-pointers. White also had a team-high four turnovers in 30 minutes.
The Spurs are back in action Tuesday night against Atlanta Hawks and rookie Trae Young. The fifth overall pick out of Oklahoma two weeks ago didn’t fare well in his professional debut Monday, going 1-for-11 on 3-pointers and 4-for-20 overall in a loss against Memphis.
Recent Colorado alum George King, a second-round pick of Phoenix two weeks ago, is scheduled to make his pro debut Friday night for the Suns in Las Vegas against Dallas. It also will be the pro debut of top overall pick Deandre Ayton from Arizona. With Ayton as the big draw, King’s first pro game will air nationally on ESPN Friday night at 7:30 p.m. MT.
White played in 24 games with the Austin Spurs this past season, averaging 20.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting .453 from the floor. White turned in a big opening game in Austin’s win against the Raptors in the G-League championship series, scoring 35 points with a 10-for-10 mark at the free throw line and an 11-for-21 mark from the floor.
White appeared in 17 games with San Antonio, averaging 8.2 minutes and 3.2 points.
