Darby Kiernan’s career day highlights No. 16 CU Buffs lacrosse win at California

Darby Kiernan became Colorado’s career assists leader and set the CU single-game points record with 10 on Sunday as she and the Buffs beat California 18-11 at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, Calif.

Kiernan also tied CU’s single-game goals record with seven as part of a 10-point afternoon for the senior attacker. Kiernan also had three assists. Her record-breaking 65th came on the first score of the game.

The Buffs improved to 11-4 overall and 8-1 in Pac-12 Conference play with one regular-season game remaining.

Both teams scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. Colorado collected the first marker, with Sophie Castillo scoring off a pass by Kiernan. The Bears (6-10, 2-7) tallied the next two to take a 2-1 lead. The Buffs’ Miranda Stinson tied the game at 2-2 at 25:35 with her first goal of the game.

Kiernan struck for her first goal less than a minute later, converting on the free-position attempt to put the Buffs back ahead, and Stinson found the back of the net for a second time at 22:19. Kiernan then recorded back-to-back goals to give the Buffs a 6-2 lead before the first 10 minutes of the frame had expired, forcing the Bears to use a timeout.

But Kiernan could not be slowed down. She recorded her fourth goal of the game with 19:32 left in the first half.

The Bears were able to respond a while later with their own back-to-back goals to make the score 7-4 CU before halftime.

Colorado scored the first goal in the second frame as Samantha Nemirov earned her first marker of the game (26:38), but California answered at 25:57 to bring the CU lead back to three goals (8-5). Anna Collawn tallied a goal at 24:45, but again, the Bears answered back.

Stinson and Kiernan added another two goals to put the Buffs up 11-6 before Cal responded with a pair of goals of its own, again cutting CU’s lead to three (11-8). CU then recorded a pair of goals from Kiernan and Castillo to put the Buffs up by five (13-8) with 16:34 left to play.

Kiernan notched her seventh goal of the game at 13:46 to give the Buffs a 14-8 advantage, which was short-lived as Cal scored at 13:02 and again at 9:59.

At that point, the Buffs went on a 4-0 run with a pair of goals from Castillo and another two from Stinson to take an 18-10 lead with less than two minutes remaining. Cal managed to score once more (18-11), but that is where the score would stay as the clock ran out.
