A critical weekend on the road began in a positive fashion for the Colorado women’s soccer team.

The Buffaloes received a goal from New Zealand native Marty Puketapu and also benefitted from an own-goal from Washington State, eventually holding on for a 2-0 victory Thursday night in Pullman, Wash.

It was the first league victory for the Buffs, who improved to 7-2-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the Pac-12 Conference. It also was CU’s second consecutive shutout win at Washington State after previously losing five in a row against the Cougars.

Puketapu tallied her fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute, putting the Buffs on the board off an assist from Becca Rasmussen. Puketapu moved into a tie for the team lead in goals with Taylor Kornieck, while Rasmussen assumed the team lead with her fifth assist of the season. Puketapu posted her goal on a rebound of a chance from Rasmussen.

CU took a two-goal edge when an own-goal from WSU in the 52nd minute pushed the Buffs’ advantage to 2-0.

The Buffs outshot Washington State 18-13, though the teams finished even in shots on goal with five apiece.

CU goalie Jalen Tompkins recorded five goals as the Buffs posted their eighth shutout of the season.

The Buffs continue their road trip Sunday with a match at the University of Washington at 1 p.m. MDT.
