Colorado head football coach Mike MacIntyre said he has yet to decide who will kick field goals this year, but it appears it’s a two-man battle.
James Stefanou, a 30-year-old freshman from Australia, is the favorite to win the job over senior Chris Graham and sophomore walk-on Davis Price, who shared the job last year.
“I would say it’s still pretty even, but I have been pleased with James and I have been pleased with Chris,” MacIntyre said.
There’s a possibility that one of them will handle field goals and extra points while the other handles kickoffs, but MacIntyre said that has yet to be decided.
Meanwhile, junior punter Alex Kinney continues to shine.
“I’ve been overly pleased with Alex Kinney,” he said. “I hope he does what he did in camp, because he’s doing what I think he’s always been able to do. I think he’s just gotten confidence and his drop is so much more consistent.”
Part of history
With Monday being the first total solar eclipse in the U.S. since 1979, the Buffs ended practice a bit early and handed out special eclipse glasses to the players so they could enjoy the view.
“It’s a pretty historical moment, to say the least, and I wanted them to be a part of it,” MacIntyre said.
Junior tight end Dylan Keeney has missed all of camp because of a back issue, but MacIntyre said Keeney continues to improve and could be at full speed next week. “He told me Friday he felt better than he’s felt in four or five months.” … With the opener against Colorado State on Sept. 1 approaching, the Buffs are “drawing back” a bit on the physicality in practice. They will continue to practice starters vs. starters, but MacIntyre said, “You limit the number of reps with it, but you keep it going.” … MacIntyre said he believes junior college transfer nose tackle Javier Edwards could have a similar impact to what Josh Tupou had a year ago. “I think Javier has got a lot of talent; we’ll just see if he can put it on and do it in a game like Josh did,” he said. … MacIntyre said sophomore quarterback Steven Montez “had his best scrimmage” on Friday.
