The early portion of the 2017-18 schedule for the University of Colorado men’s basketball team has been finalized. And it is a slate heavy on in-state foes but light on national marquee matchups.
The Buffaloes will open their 117th season with a home date on Friday, Nov. 10, renewing a rivalry with Northern Colorado. The following Tuesday, Nov. 14, CU welcomes the University of Denver and coach Rodney Billups, a Buffs assistant two seasons ago, to the Coors Events Center. It will be the programs’ first matchup since early in the 2007-08 season.
From there, the Buffs travel to the Virgin Islands to play three games in the Paradise Jam, a run that begins on Nov. 17 against Quinnipiac. The highlight of CU’s trip to the beach is a possible second-round date against Wake Forest.
The Buffs return to Colorado to face two more in-state foes, hosting Air Force on Nov. 26 and traveling to Colorado State on Dec. 2, before hosting New Mexico in the regional foes’ first contest since December of 2010.
The likely highlight of CU’s nonconference slate follows, with the Buffs completing a home-and-home series with Xavier on the road. CU knocked off a No. 13-ranked Musketeers team at home last season before Xavier eventually reached the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
CU completes the home portion of its nonconference schedule with dates against San Diego, a program the Buffs have not faced since 1992, and South Dakota State. The Buffs wrap up nonconference play against Iowa on Dec. 22 in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the Sanford Pentagon. CU played at that arena to open the 2015-16 season against Iowa State in a neutral-site contest that featured a crowd almost unanimously sided with the Cyclones.
The Buffs open the Pac-12 Conference schedule with a trip to Oregon the weekend of Dec. 27 through 31, with the specific dates and start times still to be determined.
