Colorado men’s golf produced five top-six finishers to go with winning the team title Tuesday in the Ballyneal Challenge, a one-day season-opening tournament the Buffaloes hosted at the Ballyneal Golf Club.
With an even mix of veterans and newcomers, Colorado turned in a 17-under par team score of 551, cruising to the win over Wyoming (578) and Northern Colorado (589).
The Buffs were led by junior Yannik Paul, who carded a pair of 66s on the par-71, 7,131-yard configuration to finish 10 under. Paul, the 151st-ranked amateur in the world, finished five strokes ahead of teammate Ethan Freeman, who took second.
“It was a great start to the season for the team,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “I’m very happy with the results today overall. Yannik was outstanding, he played some really good golf; it would have been good anywhere, but out here on this course, it’s especially good. He drove the ball well and hit a lot of really good approach shots into the greens.
Colorado’s Spencer Painton and true freshman Morten Toft Hansen tied for third place at 2 under, while senior Jeremy Paul shot even to take sixth.
