As they did during the first two games of the season last week, the Colorado Buffaloes women’s soccer team did a commendable job of applying offensive pressure Friday night at Kansas.
Unlike those victories last week, though, the Buffs were unable to find the back of the net. The host Jayhawks tallied a goal in the 18th minute and were able to make it stand the rest of the way, handing CU its first loss of the season in a 1-0 decision.
A defensive miscue in the 18th minute led to the Jayhawks’ lone goal, with Mandi Duggan beating CU goalkeeper Scout Watson off an assist from Tayler Estrada.
Watson drew the starting assignment Friday in coach Danny Sanchez’s early-season goalie rotation, but it proved to be a rough night for the redshirt sophomore. After making a save early in the 32nd minute, an injury forced Watson to the sideline in favor of redshirt freshman Jalen Tompkins. It was the lone save of the game for Watson, who was charged with the loss. Tompkins finished with four saves.
CU held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal at halftime but still couldn’t solve Kansas goalie Maddie Dobyns, who posted eight saves. Kansas tightened defensively in the second half, allowing the Buffs just one shot on goal over the final 45 minutes. Freshman Taylor Kornieck led the way with four shots on goal for the Buffs.
CU will continue its first out-of-state road trip of the season against another former Big 12 Conference rival, Missouri, on Sunday night at 6 p.m. MDT. The Buffs have lost six consecutive matches against the Tigers.
