CU football: Buffs’ Awuzie named to Bednarik Award watch list

Colorado’s Chidobe Awuzie was named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, presented each year to the top defensive player in the country.

Awuzie, a senior cornerback, was one of 90 players from around the country to make the list, and one of just 10 from the Pac-12 Conference.

Entering his fourth season as a starter, the 6-foot, 205-pound Awuzie is one of the most versatile defensive backs in the Pac-12, having starting at safety, cornerback and nickel during his career.

Last season, Awuzie was second on the team in tackles (90) and finished with four sacks, two interceptions, nine tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups. He earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors last season. He’s the only CU defender to make the first or second team in the five years the Buffs have been in the conference.

Bednarik Award semifinalists will be named on Oct. 31 and the three finalists will be named on Nov. 21. On Dec. 8, the winner will be announced.
