Colorado women’s basketball recruit Bria Rice has asked for and been granted her release from the letter of intent she signed with the Buffaloes in November.

A 5-foot-8 guard from Federal Way, Wash., Rice was recruited by former CU head coach Linda Lappe and signed her letter of intent in the fall.

With sophomore Kennedy Leonard entrenched as the starter at point guard, Rice decided to pursue other opportunities. Leonard was named to the Pac-12 all-freshman team last season.

Rice’s decision leaves CU with two players in the 2016 class: 5-foot-9 shooting guard Quinessa Caylao-Do from Tacoma, Wash., and 6-foot-2 forward Eleanor Jones from Salisbury, England.

First-year CU head coach JR Payne now has two open scholarships for the 2016 class. The Buffs currently have 13 players under scholarship for the 2016-17 season.

Rice and Caylao-Do were teammates at Beamer High School before Caylao-Do transferred to Bellevue High for her senior year.

Caylao-Do and Jones are set to arrive on the Boulder campus in July.
