CU men’s golf: Buffs settle for 10th after rain washes out final round

Mother Nature made sure that Colorado’s men’s golf team wouldn’t improve on its 10th-place showing at The Maxwell on Sunday in Ardmore, Okla.

Rain soaked The Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club, forcing cancellation of the final round. Therefore, second-round results were declared final, leaving the 60th-ranked Buffs 10th in the 11-team field with a 27-over-par 587 two-day score.

“We were disappointed not to be able to play today, but completely understood and accepted the decision by the tournament committee,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.

Top-ranked Texas, with a 13-under-par 547 tally, edged out No. 28 Baylor by five strokes for team honors. Oklahoma State, ranked ninth, and No. 33 New Mexico were two shots back of the Bears with a 3-under 557. Texas’ Gavin Hall was the top medalist with a 6-under 134 score.

Buffs junior Jeremy Paul tied for fourth after back-to-back rounds of 68 and 69 left him at 3-under 137. With five consecutive rounds shooting in the 60s this spring, Paul, a native of Viernheim, Germany, lowered his career stroke average to 70.45. He ranked 19th in stroke average nationally entering the tournament.

“It was a very strong tournament by Jeremy,” Edwards said. “He has had a very good spring and has positioned himself as one of the elite players in the Pac-12 and in the country.”

Colorado will play in the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City at the 7,209-yard, par-72 Salt Lake Country Club from April 29-May 1.
