CU track: Ghizzone finishes 10th in decathlon at Texas Relays

University of Colorado sophomore Andrew Ghizzone climbed six spots to finish tenth, and in the process, recorded the eighth best performance in CU history with a personal record of 6,845 points on Thursday at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.

Ghizzone started his day off early, finishing tenth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.32 seconds. Next was the discus throw where he turned in his second top 15 performance of the day, finishing 12th with a distance of 107-11.

Ghizzone was still 16th through seven events, but next up was one of his best events, the pole vault. He set a personal record after clearing 16-0.75, which was second in the competition, as well as in CU decathlon history. That finish pushed him up two spots to 14th with two events remaining.

The final event was the 1,500-meter race and Ghizzone needed a strong finish to crack the top ten in the standings. He finished second with a time of 4:31.82, which vaulted Ghizzone the final three spots he needed to crack the top ten.

On the women’s side, senior Abrianna Torres finished the heptathlon competition by finishing in 17th place with a total score of 5,160 points. She began the day with three events left, starting with the long jump where she looked to make her way up the standings.

Continuing on Friday at the Texas Relays, the Buffs will have men competing in preliminaries for the 110-meter hurdles and the 100-meters. The women will compete in prelims of the 100-meters and will race the relays. Several members of CU’s distance team will also be competing at the Stanford Invite on Friday.
