Freshman linebacker Grant Watanabe has left the Colorado football program and is no longer enrolled at CU.
Watanabe confirmed his status on Twitter on Tuesday night, positing a message to those who have supported him.
Watanabe, a 5-foot-11, 240-pounder from Brennan High School in San Antonio, tweeted “Thank you to everyone!” and posted the following message:
“The past couple of years has (sic) been challenging for me to say the least and the past year especially wasn’t what I had expected or hoped to experience my first year as a college athlete. To go to school in Boulder, CO is without a doubt a lifetime opportunity and I appreciate the the (sic) lessons that I’ve learned throughout my time there. Although I’m parting ways I can’t say enough about the people that I’ve met and friends I’ve made up there. They will forever be a part of me and those bonds will never be broken and I just want to thank everyone who’s been along my side.”
CU had planned to redshirt Watanabe this past this season, but injuries forced him into action. He played well when given a chance, recording 33 tackles one sack and two pass breakups in six games.
