Colorado women's basketball coach JR Payne officially announced Monday that Monarch High School star Peyton Carter will join the Buffaloes next season.
A senior, Carter will join the Buffs as a preferred walk-on and arrive for summer school in July.
"We are so happy that Peyton will be staying home in Colorado to be a Buff next year," Payne said in a press release. "Peyton has been coming to Coors Events Center since she was a little girl and I believe she was destined to be a Buff from the beginning."
Carter is a 5-foot-7 point guard who was given a three-star rating from ESPN. She received 14 Division I scholarship offers, but couldn't resist her desire to play at CU.
"CU was the place where I felt most comfortable and excited about," said Carter, who actually made her choice last fall.
She added that she also chose CU "because of the passion of coach Payne and her staff and their determination to be one of the top programs in the country."
In addition, CU offers her the best balance of competing at a high level in basketball, while also meeting her academic goals, Carter said.
As a senior, Carter earned first-team BoCoPreps.com all-region, Front Range League all-conference and Class 5A all-state honors after posting 15.8 points, 3.5 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game for the Coyotes (16-7).
Payne complimented Carter's work ethic, shooting and ability to help the Buffs' up-tempo style on offense.
CU's roster for the 2017-18 season is taking shape of late and will feature a much different look. Carter is one of at least seven new players, joining the six expected to return.
