The Colorado women's basketball team has added two members to its staff and some size to its lineup.
First-year head coach JR Payne announced Tuesday that the Buffs have hired Alex Earl as director of player development and Jill Mahoney as director of operations.
In addition, Payne said that 6-foot-2 center Eleanor Jones, from the United Kingdom, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Buffs this next season.
"She's coming and she's going to be a huge help," Payne said of Jones, who has been playing for the Leicester Riders in England.
Jones, 18, didn't start playing basketball until four years ago but has been a quick study. Playing for Scotland's under-16 national team in 2013, she was named to the all-tournament team at the European Championships after averaging 9.8 points, 13.5 rebounds and two blocks.
Born in Salisbury, England, Jones played for England's under-18 national team at the 2014 and 2015 European Championships.
Earl is a 2013 graduate of Arizona State and played for the Sun Devils. She then worked as an assistant coach at Lamar Community College for a year before joining Payne's staff at Santa Clara last season. Earl will handle a variety of tasks as director of player development and she will also handle the duties of video coordinator.
Mahoney has spent the past two years as associate athletic director and senior women's administrator at Western State Colorado University. Prior to that, she worked for two years as an assistant coach on Payne's staff at Southern Utah.
Payne has one assistant coaching position to fill to complete her staff, and she said she hopes to have that taken care of in the next week or so. ... The Buffs have one more scholarship to use for the 2016-17 season and they are actively recruiting to fill that spot. ... Payne said the Buffs have just one more game to schedule to fill out the 2016-17 slate.
