Earning the program's first NCAA Tournament berth since 2014 has led to a wealth of postseason honors for the Colorado volleyball team.
The Pac-12 Conference announced its all-league selections and season awards on Tuesday, and CU junior Alexa Smith led the way for the tourney-bound Buffaloes by landing a spot on the All-Pac-12 first team. Smith is the program's fifth first-team selection (fourth player) since CU joined the league in 2011, following Alexis Austin (2014 and 2015), Taylor Simpson (2014), and Nicole Edelman (2015).
Additionally, four CU players received honorable mention honors — senior Joslyn Hayes, junior Naghede Abu, junior Frankie Shebby, and freshman Brynna DeLuzio. DeLuzio also became the first CU player named to the first team of the league's all-freshman squad.
Smith, an honorable mention selection last year, ranked seventh in the Pac-12 with 4.01 kills per set and also ranked seventh at 4.41 points per set. Smith has recorded at least 20 kills eight times this season.
DeLuzio entered the preseason in a competition for the setter job with fellow freshman Jaden Newsome but quickly took control of the Buffs' offense, ranking third in the conference 11.07 assists per set. She won the freshman of the week honor four times this season.
"If we didn't have (DeLuzio) we'd have a lot different season," CU head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Which goes to show you what one little thing can do to an entire team. We knew she was good, but she's better than we thought and we're excited about that."
It is the second honorable mention selection for Abu, who tied for seventh in the league at 1.20 blocks per set. Abu also posted a career-best 249 kills.
Hayes recorded a career-best 229 kills while Shebby ranked second on the team with 378 kills.
The Buffs open the NCAA Tournament Friday against James Madison at 3:30 p.m. MT at Baylor University.
