Former University of Colorado golfer Derek Tolan crossed the first bridge Wednesday in his attempt to reach the U.S. Open for the second time.

Tolan, who qualified for the tournament 12 years ago as a 16-year-old, tied for medalist honors in the U. S. Open Local Qualifying held at the Broadmoor Golf Club's West Course in Colorado Springs.

Tolan, Alex Kephart, David Schroeder II and Brandon Bingaman all shot even-par 70. Another former Buff, Derek Fribbs, shot a 71 to earn the last qualifying spot for sectionals.

The players who advance this week will play in one of a dozen 36-hole Sectional Qualifiers, with the 10 in the U.S. scheduled for June 2. The U.S. Open itself will be held June 12-15 at the Pinehurst Resort's No. 2 course in North Carolina.
