Bio: Ryan Morgan graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in journalism in 2001. He joined the Daily Camera in 2003. Since joining the Camera, he's covered science, the environment, courts, the state Legislature and the city of Boulder.

He got into journalism because he liked the idea of a job where you get paid to learn something new every day. Seven years in, the job continues to deliver.

His attraction to journalism received a huge boost when Joel Dyer, author of "Harvest of Rage," a book about the militia movement of the 1990s, spoke to Ryan's freshman class. Dyer casually mentioned he'd taken up smoking after a disgruntled farmer he was trying to interview held him at gunpoint for several hours in his barn. "Smoking cut the tension," he said. This made reporting seem dangerous and unbelievably cool.

Ryan spent most of his time in college working as a reporter for the Boulder Weekly and later enjoyed an extended internship at the Denver Post. When the internship concluded in 2003, he joined the Daily Camera.

He hasn't taken up smoking, and, so far, no one has held him at gunpoint. But journalism has still yielded some strange and wonderful experiences. He's walked with firefighters into the still-warm devastation of a forest fire, where he saw pools of melted metal - which used to be parts of people's houses - shining in twisted shapes against the char-black ash. He's hiked through the snow in Rocky Mountain National Park to watch widlife biologists tranquilize an elk and cut out a piece of its tonsils. He's enjoyed lunch outside the Frozen Dead Guy's Tuffshed above Nederland with a group of marijuana legalization activists drafted to help refill the corpse's dry ice supply. He interviewed the woman he would later marry while covering the state Legislature.

And he's gone to lots and lots of City Council meetings.
