Freshman Erik Dengerud won the Individual RMISA Championship in the men's 10K freestyle race, propelling the University of Colorado ski team to second place and just two points behind the leader after the first day of the 70th Annual RMISA Championships here Wednesday at Government Peak.

Dengerud's win is the first of his career and four other Buffs finished in the top 10. Sophomore Sondre Bollum finished fifth and junior Andrew Potyk 10th in the men's race while senior Christina Rolandsen hit the podium in third place and sophomore Hedda Baangman finished sixth in the women's 5k race.

"Overall, I'm happy," CU Nordic coach Jana Weinberger. "Erik getting the win is good, very good. He's been moving in the right direction all season, every race has been better and it's good to see him get his first win."

The Buffs won the men's race with 90 points and finished second in the women's race with 78 points for a total of 158, just two points behind Utah's total of 160 through two of eight races. Host Alaska Anchorage is in third 33 points behind Utah with 137 points.

The RMISA Championships will continue Friday with Nordic freestyle races and alpine giant slalom races. The UAA Invitational will continue Thursday with giant slalom races.

The team standings are a Pac-12 showdown between Utah and Colorado, separated by just two points, 170-168. Host Alaska Anchorage is third with 137 points followed by New Mexico in fourth with 121. Denver rounds out the top five with 116 points with Montana State (103) and Alaska Fairbanks (93) concluding the team scoring.


Christina Rolandsen hit the podium for the second straight freestyle race, coming in third in a time of 15:23.6, 18.0 seconds behind race winner Guro Jordheim from Utah (15:05.6). Hedda Baangman finished sixth in a time of 15:49.7 for her seventh top 10 finish of the season. Junior Anne Siri Lervik finished 16th in 16:13.5 and freshman Ezra Smith gook 22nd in 16:24.0.
