The Colorado men's alpine team made up a little ground at the Utah Invitational on Friday by placing three finishers in the top 11 of the giant slalom race held at Snowbasin Resort in Huntsville, Utah.

Led by a sixth-place finish by Ola Johansen, a 10th-place showing by Joey Young and an 11th-place effort by Max Luukko, CU earned 68 points to move up from seventh place into a tie for fourth after two of eight events in the meet. Denver, with 176 points, holds a 30½-point lead over second place Montana State. Host Utah is in third place, while New Mexico is tied with the Buffs in fourth.

For Friday's men's giant slalom, the Buffs placed fourth in the race with 68 points, trailing Montana State (89), Utah (74) and Denver (69).

Young, with his No. 37 start position, finished his first run in a time of 1:05.67, which was 16 spots better than his seeding, and thus worked his way into the top 30 and an early start position for the start of the second run. That gave three Buffs standing in the top 17 among RMISA schools after the first run, with Luukko in eighth and Johansen 10th.

Bobby Moyer, who started 43rd on the first run, finished in 1:06.65, 11 spots better than his seed, but he narrowly missed out on getting into the top 30.

Young used his No. 8 starting position on the second run to clock a time of 1:08.22, the ninth fastest in the field for the second time down the run. He ended up placing 10th, his best GS finish of the young season, with a two-run time of 2:13.89.

Johansen had the sixth fastest second-run, timed at 1:08.10, allowing him to place sixth overall. Luukko was the 11th fastest on run two at 1:08.71 while Moyer's second run was clocked at 1:10.29. Moyer finished 26th overall.

The men's and women's alpine teams will have their final race of the Utah Invitational today with the running of the slalom events. The Nordic teams will also be in action in West Yellowstone, Mont. at the Rendezvous Ski Trails for the 5/10K freestyle skate as a part of the Montana State Invitational.
