A Colorado golf legend and a rising local star still writing her own history will soon cross paths for a memorable moment.

University of Colorado legend and golf Hall of Famer Hale Irwin will be at the Meridian Golf Club in Englewood on Monday afternoon to announce the winners of the inaugural Hale Irwin Medals, and the first recipients of the honor also boast local ties.

The initial winners of the Irwin Medals will be Westminster's Jennifer Kupcho and former CU golfer Dale Douglass, a Buffs standout in the 1950s who won the 1986 U.S. Senior Open. The honor intends to recognize "Colorado's outstanding golfers who exhibit competitiveness, resiliency and a proven record of winning."

Kupcho, a former state titlist at Jefferson Academy and currently a senior at Wake Forest, is the reigning NCAA women's champion. Kupcho is slated to play in the first Augusta National Women's Amateur beginning April 3, and she remains the first player to win the Colorado Women's Golf Association Player of the Year and CWGA Junior Player of the Year in the same season.

While Irwin will make the announcement Monday, the formal medal ceremony will not be held until Nov. 23 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Irwin, also graduate of Boulder High, posted 45 PGA Tour wins was a three-time winner of the U.S. Open.
