CU women's hoops receives another in-state commitment

Kathy McConnell-Miller's focus on recruiting the top in-state talent continued to pay off on Tuesday.

McConnell-Miller's Colorado women's basketball team received a commitment from one of the state's top point guards in the 2009 recruiting class in Janeesa "Chucky" Jeffery of Sierra High School in Colorado Springs.

"She can start on any boys team in this city," Sierra coach J.J. Owens said. "I think she can be one of the most physical point guards in the Big 12 the moment she walks on campus."

Jeffery said she was drawn to CU because she could play in-state and go to a university with a good business school. She wants to get a degree in accounting.

She also wanted to play with Highlands Ranch freshman Alyssa Fressle, against whom Jeffery played in high school.

"It felt like a home away from home," said Jeffery, referring to the time she came to Boulder on an unofficial visit. "It's not far away from home either. It'll be good to have my family and everyone be able to see me play."

Jeffery's commitment gives CU three in-state players who will graduate from high school in 2009. The 2009 recruiting class is expected to be one of the deepest in recent history.

With Jeffery, the Buffs garnered three of the top-six in-state players for 2009. They lost out on the top recruit in Broomfield center Anna Prins (Iowa State) and the No. 2 recruit in Regis forward Diana Rolniak (Utah).Jeffery will join Boulder twin sisters Brenna and Meagan Malcolm-Peck, who each play small forward. The Malcolm-Pecks are considered the third and fourth best in-state recruits.

The other top in-state recruit for 2009 is Regis point guard Mariah Williams, who reportedly is still undecided.

The Buffs have two scholarships still to give to 2009 recruits, having locked up two small forwards, a point guard and a center -- 6-foot-7 Melissa MacFarlane of Omaha, Neb.

When Jeffery joins the team in the fall of 2009, the Buffs will have plenty of depth at point guard as Whitney Houston will be a senior, Britney Blythe will be a junior and Fressle, who can play point guard or shooting guard, will be a sophomore.

Jeffery has been compared to Fressle in the sense that they can both play a variety of positions from point guard to small forward.

Jeffery helped Sierra go 22-4 last winter as the Stallions narrowly missed out on a trip to the Coors Events Center with a two-point loss in the Elite Eight.

The 5-foot-10 "do everything" player averaged 19.2 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.6 steals, 3.8 assists and 1.8 blocks for Sierra last season.

"She's unbelievable," Owens said. "She has an amazing basketball IQ. She's very unselfish."

Jeffery slipped under the recruiting radar somewhat because she didn't play club basketball this summer, and therefore she is not ranked by recruiting services.

Jeffery said she made one trip in April to a basketball tournament, but after that she couldn't find a club team in Colorado Springs that she liked so she didn't play.

It didn't hurt her recruiting.

Jeffery was sought after by Kansas State, UCLA, California, Arizona State, Wyoming and Louisville. She had a scholarship offer from Kansas State.

Owens said Jeffery has a 3.8 grade point average and is on the leadership team at Sierra.

"She does what she's supposed to do," Owens said. "She's a hard worker and she's worked her butt off to get where she's at."

Excellent job at bringing in both in-state and out of state talent coach. The women's team should be in the mix for an NCAA tourney berth this year, and it only gets better after that.

Go Buffs!
