Ohio (0-1) at
No. 3 Ohio State (1-0)
TIME/TV: 10 a.m., ESPN.
FAVORITE: Ohio State by 31.
COACHES: Frank Solich (19-19 in fourth year at Ohio) and Jim Tressel (74-16 in 8th year at Ohio State).
LAST WEEK: Ohio lost at Wyoming, 21-20. Ohio State beat Youngstown State, 43-0.
SERIES HISTORY: Ohio State leads, 5-0.
LAST MEETING: Ohio State won, 40-16, in 1999.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Buckeyes have not lost to Mid-American Conference team since 1894 (23-0) and are 20-1 vs. non-conference foes at home under Tressel.
GAME FACTS: After going 9-5 including first bowl game in 38 years in 2006, Bobcats regressed to 6-6 last year and haven't exactly been giant-killers (14 straight losses to ranked teams since 1990). Sparked by RB Donte Harden's 100-yard kickoff return TD and QB Theo Scott's passing (26-of-34, 224 yards, TD, int.), Ohio had 20-14 lead in final quarter last week before succumbing. Bobcats actually led, 10-3, in second quarter of last visit to Columbus nine years ago. OSU is probably looking ahead to showdown next week at No. 1 USC. RB "Beanie" Wells left in second quarter last week with foot injury but says he's fine and wants to play. Tressel may sit him, though, and go with sophomore backup Dan Heron, who got his first five carries vs. Youngstown State. Highly touted freshman QB Terrelle Pryor (4-of-6, 45 passing, 52 rushing, TD run) made most of his debut last week in relief of senior Todd Boeckman (14-of-19, 187 passing, 2 TDs). Easy win will be 800th in OSU history (5th on all-time list behind Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas and Nebraska).
Miami of Ohio (0-1)
at Michigan (0-1)
TIME/TV: 10 a.m., ESPN2.
FAVORITE: Michigan by 14.
COACHES: Shane Montgomery (15-22 in fourth year at Miami) and Rich Rodriguez (first year at Michigan).
LAST WEEK: Miami of Ohio lost at home to Vanderbilt, 34-13. Michigan lost at home to Utah, 25-23.
SERIES HISTORY: Michigan leads, 4-0.
LAST MEETING: Michigan won, 43-10, in 2004.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Wolverines are 5-4 at home since start of last season, equaling UM's losses in Ann Arbor from 2001-2006.
GAME FACTS: Redhawks rolled up 436 total yards in opener but were done in by QB Daniel Raudabaugh's 3 ints., though the junior did pass for 334 yards including 34-yard TD to WR Eugene Harris. Montgomery can't be happy that defense got pushed around for 250 yards rushing by suspect Vanderbilt ground game while punt team was burned for 91-yard return. Rodriguez has plenty of woes of his own after his disheartening debut that saw Wolverines new spread offense manage only 203 total yards (36 of it rushing) with three turnovers. Neither sophomore QB Nick Sheridan nor freshman Steven Threet (combined 19-of-38, 167 passing, TD, int.) looked good and Rodriguez isn't saying who will start. In their defense, offensive line did little until late rally fell just short. LB Obi Ezeh did all he could with 15 tackles. A second consecutive 0-2 start at home would have Wolverine faithful fuming.
No. 15 BYU (1-0) at
Washington (0-1)
TIME/TV: 1 p.m., Fox Sports Net.
FAVORITE: BYU by 7.
COACHES: Bronco Mendenhall (29-10 in fourth year at BYU) and Tyrone Willingham (11-26 in fourth year at Washington).
LAST WEEK: BYU beat Northern Iowa, 41-17. Washington lost at Oregon, 44-10.
SERIES HISTORY: Washington leads, 4-2.
LAST MEETING: .BYU won, 35-28, in 1999.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Under Willingham, Huskies are 1-14 vs. ranked teams.
GAME FACTS: An impressive 21-2 since October, 2006, Cougars have superior talent here. Junior QB Max Hall (34-of-41, 486 passing, 2 TDs, TD run in opener), sophomore RB Harvey Unga (113 yards from scrimmage, 2 TD runs, TD catch in opener) are well kept secrets and have combined to account for 50 TDs since start of last season. Opening debacle at Oregon puts Willingham on an even hotter seat. Inexperience (10 freshmen or sophomores started) showed as defense was trampled for 496 total yards while capable QB Jake Locker (12-of-28, 103 passing, 57 rushing) never really got going in UW's 15th loss in last 20 games. Line has got to do a better job protecting Locker, opening holes for talented freshman RB Chris Polk, held to just 19 yards on 14 carries at Oregon. Freshman QB Quinton Richardson had int., 2 pass breakups and must hold up vs. speedy Cougars receivers.
Cincinnati (1-0)
at No. 4 Oklahoma (1-0)
TIME/TV: 1:30 p.m., ABC
FAVORITE: Oklahoma by 21.
COACHES: Brian Kelly (12-3 in second year at Cincinnati) and Bob Stoops (97-22 in 10th year at Oklahoma).
LAST WEEK: Cincinnati beat Eastern Kentucky, 40-7. Oklahoma beat Chattanooga, 57-2.
SERIES HISTORY: First meeting.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Sooners have won 19 straight home games (longest streak in nation) by average score of 43-15.
GAME FACTS: Coming off first 10-win season in 50 years, Bearcats take huge step up to in terms of level of competition going from I-AA patsy into Norman. "We're going to find out more about our team. That's why I scheduled this game," Kelly said. QB Dustin Groza had field day in opener with career-high 295 yards passing with 3 TD passes, TD run. He might not get half as much vs. Sooners as UC's spread isn't likely to confuse Stoops' defense. Sooners led 50-0 at half in opener before rainstorm delayed game for an hour and Stoops called off dogs in second half. Sophomore QB Sam Bradford (17-of-22, 183 passing, 2 TDs last week) might be most efficient passer in nation (38 career TD passes, 8 ints., led nation last year with 176.53 rating). DE Auston English (preseason Big 12 defensive player of year), S Nick Harris are standouts on defense, that still has score to settle after giving up unfathomable 525 total yards in 48-28 Fiesta Bowl loss to West Virginia last January
Oregon State (0-1) at
No. 19 Penn State (1-0)
TIME/TV: 1:30 p.m., KMGH (7)
FAVORITE: Penn State by 16-1/2.
COACHES: Mike Riley (47-39 in 8th year at Oregon State and Joe Paterno (373-125-3 in 43rd year at Penn State).
LAST WEEK: Oregon State lost at Stanford, 36-28. Penn State beat Coastal Carolina, 66-10.
SERIES HISTORY: First meeting.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Beavers have never beaten a non-conference BCS team on the road (0-7).
GAME FACTS: Stupid mistakes (4 turnovers, all in second half, 12 penalties) doomed Beavers in frustrating opener. OSU still had chance to win, but RB Darrell Catchings fumbled ball through Stanford end zone with 47 seconds left. QB Lyle Moevao's career-high 404 yards passing were wasted. In first game since 2006, WR Sammie Stroughter (12 catches, 157 yards, 2 TDs) didn't miss a beat. Senior S Al Afalava returns after being suspended for opener. Laugher over I-AA foe pushed Paterno into tie with Florida State's Bobby Bowden on all-time I-A win list. Offense rolled up 594 total yards, 29 first downs with RB Evan Royster (3 TD runs), QB Daryll Clark (11-of-14, 146 passing, TD). WR Derrick Williams broke game open with 89-yard TD kickoff return in second quarter. Lions ground attack (334 rushing with 8 different players dividing 27 carries) could find plenty of holes in Beavers' front seven that gave up surprising 210 yards rushing to not-so-physical Stanford.
Ole Miss (1-0) at
No. 20 Wake Forest (1-0)
TIME/TV: 1:30 p.m., No TV
FAVORITE: Wake Forest by 8.
COACHES: Houston Nutt (first year at Ole Miss) and Jim Grobe (47-39 in 8th year at Wake Forest).
LAST WEEK: Ole Miss beat Memphis, 41-24. Wake Forest won at Baylor, 41-13.
SERIES HISTORY: Wake leads, 1-0.
LAST MEETING: Wake won, 27-3, in 2006.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Since October, 2004, Rebels have lost 16 straight games to ranked foes.
GAME FACTS: In Ole Miss debut last week after 10 years at Arkansas, Nutt got a big boost from sophomore QB Jevan Snead, a transfer from Texas, who zipped 16 and 64-yard TD strikes to WR Shay Hodge, and caught a pass for 37 yards on trick play. Ground game added terrific balance with 216 yards including Dexter McCluster's 32-yard scoring burst. Defense did show holes, though, giving up 424 yards. Deacons rode underrated QB Riley Skinner (27-of-36, 220 passing, 3 TDs) to smooth opener. Though he's only a junior, Skinner has already guided Wake to 19 wins, most of any QB in school history. Freshman RB C.J. Washington broke off 55-yard run, but rest of ground game managed only 101 yards on 43 carries. Grobe can't like that. Defense that returns 9 starters looked dominant holding Baylor to 94 yards on ground, forcing 5 turnovers including senior CB Alphonso Smith's school-record 15th career int.
San Diego State (0-1)
at Notre Dame (0-0)
TIME/TV: 1:30 p.m., KUSA (9)
FAVORITE: Notre Dame by 21.
COACHES: Chuck Long (7-18 in third year at San Diego State) and Charlie Weis (22-15 in fourth year at Notre Dame).
LAST WEEK: San Diego State lost at home to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, 29-27.
SERIES HISTORY: First meeting.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Fighting Irish's 3-9 mark last year was their fourth losing season since 1999, equaling ND's total from 1961-98.
GAME FACTS: A loss here would likely be beginning of end for Weis. That's because the Aztecs, a combined 16-31 last four seasons, are coming off awful loss to I-AA team that rolled up 483 total yards while SDSU offense coughed up 5 turnovers. QB Ryan Lindley did throw for 352 yards, 3 TDs but added pair of costly ints. Amazingly, SDSU only had the ball for 22 minutes. Key for Irish improvement centers on how much better awful line has gotten after giving up school-record and nation's worst 58 sacks last year. Weis wants sophomore QB Jimmy Clausen (138-of-245, 1,254 passing, 7 TDs, 6 ints.) to become more of a leader. Better protection would be a start. Speedy RB Armando Allen has star potential. CB Terrail Lambert, LB Maurice Crum anchor defense that returns seven starters but gave up too many big plays last year (72nd nationally in scoring defense last year, 28.7 ppg, gave up 30 points or more in 8 of 9 losses).
No. 8 West Virginia (1-0)
at East Carolina (1-0)
TIME/TV: 2:30 p.m., ESPN.
FAVORITE: West Virginia by 8.
COACHES: Bill Stewart (2-0 in first year at West Viginia) and Skip Holtz (21-17 in third year at East Carolina).
LAST WEEK: West Virginia beat Villanova, 48-21. East Carolina beat Va. Tech, 27-22.
SERIES HISTORY: West Virginia leads, 17-2.
LAST MEETING: West Virginia won, 48-7, last year.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Since 2000, Mountaineers have beaten Pirates seven straight times by average score of 40-15.
GAME FACTS: Stewart hopes Pirates stirring upset of Va. Tech last week gets his players' attention -- instead of last year's trouncing in Morgantown when WVU outgained ECU 599 total yards to 160. QB Pat White did most of the damage that day with nearly flawless performance (18-of-20 passing, 181 yards, 2 TDs, 2 TD runs). In fact, White almost ran for more yards (42) than Pirates QBs Rob Kass, and Patrick Pinkey threw for (combined 9-of-17 for 54 yards). White was even better in opener (25-of-33, 208 passing, career-high 5 TDs, int.), though I-AA competition must be taken into consideration. Having beaten ranked teams in consecutive games (Boise State in Hawaii Bowl last December), Pirates did in Va. Tech in dramatic fashion on WR T.J. Lee's blocked punt and return for 27-yard TD with 1:52 left. Pinkey played well (19-of-23, 211 passing, TD pass, TD run) in rallying team from 22-13 third-quarter deficit. LB Quentin Cotton was unsung hero with int., sack, 5 tackles as defense forced two turnovers (9th time in last 10 games ECU has forced at least two turnovers). CB Jerek Hewett (ankle) is questionable.
California (1-0) at
Washington St. (0-1)
TIME/TV: 4:30 p.m. Fox Sports Net.
FAVORITE: Cal by 13.
COACHES: Jeff Tedford (51-26 in 7th year at Cal) and Paul Wulff (first year at Washington State).
LAST WEEK: Cal beat Michigan State, 38-31. Washington State lost at home to Oklahoma State, 39-13.
SERIES HISTORY: Cal leads, 39-25-5.
LAST MEETING: Cal won, 20-17, last year.
STATS THAT MATTER: Bears have beaten Cougars last three years but WSU is 9-1 vs. Cal in Pullman since 1979.
GAME FACTS: Bears roared out of gate last week as sophomore QB Kevin Riley shined (17-of-24, 202 passing, 2 TDs) and freshman Shane Vereen's 81-yard TD run with four minutes left clinched win. Only down notes were senior QB Nate Longshore's dismal cameo appearance (3-of-5, 62 passing, 2 ints., 1 run back for TD) in second quarter and defense giving 321 yards passing. Wulff had dismal debut as head coach at his alma mater as Cougars managed only 196 total yards with his new, no-huddle offense. 5th-year senior QB Gary Rogers struggled mightily (12-of-24, 82 passing, TD, int., sacked twice) with accuracy. New 4-3 defense showed promise giving up 361 yards as Okla. State scored on 100-yard kickoff return and turnovers set up other scores. LB Greg Trent (9 tackles) is sure hitter.
No. 17 South Florida (1-0)
at Central Florida (1-0)
TIME/TV: 5 p.m., ESPN2.
FAVORITE: South Florida by 13-1/2.
COACHES: Jim Leavitt (53-30 in 8th year at South Florida) and George O'Leary (23-28 in 5th year at Central Fla.).
LAST WEEK: South Florida beat Tennessee-Martin, 56-7. Central Florida beat South Carolina State, 17-0.
SERIES HISTORY: South Florida leads, 3-0.
LAST MEETING: South Florida won, 64-12, last year.
STAT THAT MATTERS: In romping past Knights last year, Bulls out-gained UCF 541 total yards to 145.
GAME FACTS: Despite last year's rout, Bulls need to stay focused here as recent play on road (9-9 last three seasons) is cause for concern. QB Mike Grothe continues to grow into polished passer (2 TD passes in opener) and threw for 2 TDs and ran for two more vs. UCF last year. Son of former NFL player by same name, WR Jesse Hester Jr. has speed to get deep. DE George Selvie caused havoc on Knights last year with 4 tackles for loss, sack en route to leading nation with 31-1/2 tackles for loss. Knights need to avoid mistakes of last year (4 turnovers, 4 sacks given up) or another embarrassment may loom. In first career start last week vs. overmatched I-AA foe, junior QB Mike Greco (9-of-16, 90 passing, 57 yards rushing) hardly overwhelmed fans. With All-American RB Kevin Smith now in NFL, offense only put up 318 total yards. Senior CB Joe Burnett (12 career ints.) is also top-notch return man (active D-I leader with 1,009 career punt return yards). Since losing opening of Bright House Stadium to No. 6 Texas, 35-32, last Sept., UCF has won seven straight games in their plush home.
Miami (1-0) at
No. 5 Florida (1-0)
TIME/TV: 6 p.m., ESPN.
FAVORITE: Florida by 21.
COACHES: Randy Shannon (6-7 in second year at Miami) and Urban Meyer (32-8 in fourth year at Florida).
LAST WEEK: Miami beat Charleston-Southern, 56-7. Florida beat Hawaii, 56-10.
SERIES HISTORY: Miami leads, 28-25.
LAST MEETING: Miami won, 27-10, in the 2004 Peach Bowl.
STAT THAT MATTERS: Under Meyer, Gators are 20-1 in Gainesville while averaging.41.6 points per game.
GAME FACTS: This could be mismatch as Hurricanes have lost six straight to ranked teams on road. Gators WR Louis Murphy threw more fuel on fire saying "We're the University of Florida. We're the 'U.' I don't refer to them as the 'U.' I refer to them as Miami. If the 'U' is for university and winning and championships, we're the 'U.'" Ouch. UM QB Robert Mavre will make first career start after serving suspension last week but fellow freshman Jacroy Harris (16-of-20, 190 passing, TD pass, TD run last week) will also play. Gators will welcome back star RB Percy Harvin, LB Brandon Spikes from injuries. Not that UF needed them in opener. Murphy caught 48-yard TD pass from defending Heisman-winner Tim Tebow while RB Brandon James added 74-yard punt return TD, one-yard TD run and freshman RB Chris Demps bursting free for 62-yard score. Defense also scored twice, forced 6 turnovers and got two sacks from DT Lawrence Marsh. And with off week next week, UF isn't likely to be looking ahead to SEC opener at Tennessee Sept. 20.
Stanford (1-0) at
No. 15 Arizona St. (1-0)
TIME/TV: 8 p.m. Fox Sports Net.
FAVORITE: Arizona State by 14.
COACHES: Jim Harbaugh (5-8 in second year at Stanford) and Dennis Erickson (11-3 in second year at Arizona State).
LAST WEEK: Stanford beat Oregon State, 36-28. Arizona State beat Northern Arizona, 41-10.
SERIES HISTORY: Arizona State leads, 15-9.
LAST MEETING: Arizona State won, 41-3, last year.
STAT THAT MATTERS: In beating Cardinal last two years, Sun Devils have outscored Stanford, 71-6, while out-gaining them to 811 total yards to 538.
GAME FACTS: Looking for first 2-0 start since 2004, Cardinal will have to earn it here against ASU team they don't match up well with. Sophomore RB Toby Gerhart showed potential with career-high 148 yards, 2 TDs in opener. S Bo McNally's 34-yard int. return for TD provided winning points. Sun Devils junior QB Rudy Carpenter hasn't made many of those kind of mistakes in shredding Stanford for 563 yards, 5 TDs (2 ints.) in last two wins and tied school record with 13 straight completions vs. Northern Iowa. RB Keegan Herring (hamstring) is questionable after sitting out opener. DE Dexter Davis (2 sacks in first game) is explosive pass-rusher with LB Mike Nixon (8 tackles) a player to take notice of.
