Buffs hurdle Eagles' upset bid

The turning point on the field Saturday came late in the game when a diminutive cornerback leaped high to snatch victory out of thin air. But the mental and emotional change came at halftime when a group of seniors stepped forward in the locker room and said “enough is enough.”

The Colorado Buffaloes looked well on their way to allowing another heavy underdog from the Big Sky Conference to walk into their stadium and smack them around at Folsom Field.

They spotted the Eastern Washington Eagles a double-digit lead with bad decision making and unforced errors, but unlike two years ago in that legendary defeat to Montana State, the Buffs executed adjustments, found some poise and rallied to a thrilling 31-24 win.

“Whew,” coach Dan Hawkins said when asked for an opening statement postgame. “I told you guys they’re a good football team, and they are. One of the things we always try to get our guys is not to get caught up in the decal on the side of the helmet.”

The Buffs are 2-0 for the first time since 2005 and have 12 days to wait until a Thursday night home game against a West Virginia team that was unable to rally and avoid upset Saturday against East Carolina.

The Buffs credited their senior class, led by captains Patrick Williams, Daniel Sanders, Maurice Cantrell and Ryan Walters, for taking charge of a downtrodden locker room at intermission and not pointing fingers. CU trailed 21-7 at the time.

“They said, ‘We’re not out of this. Let’s deal with the adversity, comeback, do what we know we can do and make some plays,’” wide receiver Scotty McKnight said. “Inevitably, that’s what we did.”

Colorado outscored EWU 24-3 in the second half and won the game in the final 2 minutes when junior Cha’pelle Brown intercepted Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols and returned the ball 27 yards for a score in the south end zone. Thousands of students clad in gold T-shirts erupted in a frenzy of high-fives and jubilation.

Brown’s play broke a 24-24 tie and gave CU its only lead of the day.

“Coach told us before that play when we went out there on defense, he said, ‘Don’t wait for the offense to score. Defense go out there and make a play and score.’” Brown said. “So that’s what I did. Coach always says it doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish.”

It was clear from the beginning the Eagles came to prove themselves. They scored on the opening drive, marching 84 yards in nine plays, when Nichols connected with Brynsen Brown on a 43-yard touchdown pass.

Brown beat CU defensive back Jalil Brown on the play and dragged him nearly 20 yards to the end zone.

Nichols completed 32 of 51 passes for 303 yards, his second straight 300-yard passing game.

The Eagles converted on three third-down plays on the drive and finished the first half, going 7-for-10 in third-down situations.

Hawkins credited defensive coordinator Ron Collins for tweaking his approach in the second half. The Buffs began bringing more pressure with linebackers blitzing, forcing Nichols into two interceptions.

They limited the Eagles to converting four of nine third downs in the second half.

“We will have to learn how to finish an opponent,” EWU coach Beau Baldwin said. “Our team was a play or two from being where we needed to be.”

CU freshman running backs Darrell Scott and Rodney Stewart continued to show off play-making ability Saturday, and fans rewarded Scott by chanting his name on several occasions.

The Buffs scored on a 13-play drive in the first quarter. Scott provided the highlight with a 22-yard run in which he hurdled linebacker Zach Johnson.

Scott’s uncle, wide receiver Josh Smith, caught a 9-yard touchdown pass on the next play and admitted quarterback Cody Hawkins bailed him out with a good throw after he ran the wrong route.

Smith said watching his nephew hurdle a defender reminded him of playing with Scott in high school when Scott began hurdling defenders as a sophomore.

“He knows he’s not going to take that knee shot and he’s not going to take that ankle bite,” Smith said. “If you come in too low, he’s going over you. If you come in too high, he’s trucking you over. He has his plan. It’s as simple as that.”

Smith nearly missed returning a kick for a touchdown for the second week in a row in the third quarter. He fielded a punt near midfield and returned it to the Eagles’ 4-yard line.

Quarterback Cody Hawkins, who was intercepted for a touchdown in the first half, connected with true freshman tight end Ryan Deehan three plays later for a score. All told, Hawkins completed 28 of 38 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns.

Hawkins led his team to a tying touchdown in the final minutes, completing four passes in a five-play drive, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to fullback Jake Behrens. Wide receiver Patrick Williams also came through with a clutch 36-yard grab on the drive.

“We had confidence,” Williams said. “We were shooting ourselves in the foot the whole time. We knew what we were capable of doing. We just had to go out and execute and play with pride and play with passion.”

Seriously, that SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The offense was way weak until the fourth quarter. Turnovers, penalities... CU pulled that one out of its a88...

West Virginia is getting smoked by Eastern Carolina. And frankly Ohio St. should have lost to Ohio. The score is not indicative of how close that game was. Welcome to parity college football!

That was a tough game, but WVU is getting POUNDED by ECU right now, that doesn't scare me too much. Nebraska struggled BIG with San Jose State today, I wouldn't feel much better if I were a lame Fusker

WTF was THAT ? better lucky than good sometimes. They almost blew it.

They better strap it on and get back to basics. That was too close.

That was too scary!!!!
The offensive line was, well, offensive...
Can hardly wait to see fome experience back on that line.(Geer, Head) We need some bodies blocking and providing some time/protection to the QB

Comes down to coaching. Hawkins needs some discipline on that team. Turnovers and penalties for the 2nd game in a row. Come on Hawkins!!!!! Ugh.....

Regarding schedule strength of CU

WMU > CSU
SJSU D-1 > East. Wash. FCS formerly 1 AA which cu struggled to beat

New Mexico St < West Virginia, who is currently getting waxed by ECU. But, I'll still give this one to the buff's considering NMSU just doesn't have much to offer.

VT 07 ACC Champs > FSU a 07 team with 4 loss

So, all this rhetoric coming out of boulder about cu schedule being so much more than NU is BS.

One game difference and that difference right now is looking pretty thin.

And I still say WVU and FSU will beat the buff's

I called the WVU/ECU game on this site. Just be glad CU does not have ECU next game. Their running game is scary. Looking forward to hearing about Cody's performance. Three TD's but...

We're 2-0 and should sniff a top 25 vote or two. Cant complain too much about undefeated.

Posted by dpease on September 6, 2008 at 4:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That was scary, and with the game not on TV I was going nuts hitting the refresh button the past three hours and talking w/ friends for updates. Why can't CU have an online link for radio for those alums out of state?? Please? I would pay for it.
Thankfully we pulled out the win, but as the article said, it wasn't pretty.
Once again penalties were a problem, but at least the defense seemed to stiffen in the second half. The offense still needs some work. What is going on with those handoffs to Josh Smith? And the fumbles?
Would love to read some comments from Buff fans at the game to get a better feel of how the team really played.
Regardless, a win is a win, and we now have some time to get these things fixed before the brutal schedule starts.
Go BUFFS!

Ugly win, I agree.

CaliBuff,

At least the SJSU team we played today is D-1 and not like the 1 AA or FCS team you guys struggled to beat today.

So, which team do you think has more to be concerned about? A team that beat a lower division D 1 team by 23 or a team that needed late heroics to pull out a win over a 1 AA/FCS team?

Lots of questions to be answered beginning with coaching and the o-line. Make no mistake, to get that win says a lot - some good (comin' up big in the end, DEEFENSE!), a helluva a lot not so. Still 2-0 is 2-0.

Ignore the ignorant! Embrace the ride! Hasta la victoria, siempre!

Posted by focobuff on September 6, 2008 at 5:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I was at the game and I just wanted to make a few observations.

1) Cody did not play well. I'm as big a Cody Hawkins supporter as anybody else, but he made bad decisions, bad reads, and many terrible throws. He was Cody Hawkins of 07 today for sure. That is undoubtedly the best way to put it.

2) The offensive line still looks extremely raw. Pass protection was sketchy at times and it just seemed like we weren't getting the type of push you would expect when a Big 12 team plays one from D1-AA. I really hope they improve for Big 12 play, or it's going to be a long year.

3) Darrell Scott is going to be something special. The kid knows where the holes are and is deceptively fast and strong. For those of you not at the game, there was a play where he actually hurdled a tackler for 8 extra yards. He is the real deal.

4) Mental mistakes plagued us all game. Whether it was penalties, or just not seeing the field, we looked very unprepared.

5) We have to have a more consistent pass rush. If Matt Nichols from Eastern Washington can sit in the pocket uncontested and make throw after throw, imagine what Daniel and other Big 12 quarterbacks will do.

6) I know that I should give it time, but I am not pleased with the shotgun attack on offense. Do we even have a power running formation in our playbook? Scott's a dandy, but even he won't be able to bust big gains if opposing teams constantly have eight in the box and everyone in the stadium knows we are going to run the football without a lead blocker.

7)Lastly, I was extremely disappointed with our conservative gameplan on offense. No attempt to stretch the field whatsoever until late in the game. Yes, I understand that Hawkins wants to keep things underwraps for West Virginia and company, but when you're getting beat by Eastern Washington, you have to open it up. Period.

Overall, I was very disappointed with our effort on offense and defense and I really hope the boys get it together for WVU, FSU, and Big 12 play, or we could be looking at a major dip in recruiting.

darrell scott will never be what you guys think he will. with the style of offense that we run, he will never be great like we want.

Any more like that, Houston, and I'll stand before ye all and go negative...

One thing I'd like clarification on, though: Cody was 28-38, or some such nonsense. "Lots of bad reads"....? The INT was huge, but the guy was closing in on a 75 percent completion rate. I couldn't watch so don't know, but how many "bad reads" could there have been? Were other receivers open and he threw to the wrong guy?

Enlightenment, anyone?

Posted by buffballaz on September 6, 2008 at 6:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Cody played good for a poor offensive line performance. Darrel Scott is sick, he made runs out of nothing today. One play he even waved his arms at the coaches in disgust out of the play calling. I dont mind the spread offense attack, but we need to incorporate a little power running.

On another note, would somebody show jalil brown and gardner how to tackle.

Any way, a win is a win. Im upset that wv lost today because that would have made beating them next thursday much more enjoyable.

Posted by 20buff on September 6, 2008 at 6:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

focobuff- I was at the game also, your points are dead on. Terrible read on Cody's interception, the defensive player never even had to make a move, Cody threw right at him. I thought both EW lines dominated our lines. Also agree that our formations are very difficult to run out of, there is no momentum toward the line of scrimmage when the back gets the ball. Also, EW would have defeated both of Nebraska's opponents so far. They are a well coached, talented team for 1-AA.

Posted by ridewinter on September 6, 2008 at 6:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The offense looked flat out confused much of the game. The no-huddle showed it's ugly side today. They are going to need that week & 1/2 to learn from their mistakes, and not look so flustered out there. Not Cody's best game, he missed a couple wide open receivers that would've been easy touchdowns.

Other than the opening drive the D played pretty well though...

The whole team looked out of sync, man, even the band was off today. Glad we made some plays and pulled it off...

Posted by hinfinityl on September 6, 2008 at 6:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with some earlier posts that - while I AM EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY HAPPY THAT WE FOUND A WAY TO WIN - I think we need to change up our offensive schemes somewhat so that power running can be accomplished more easily and we don't keep ending up in 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations. With Scott's clearly incredible skills, there's no reason not to try to capitalize on our assets.

Hey guys, I realize as a fan you expect our CU team to do well. But lets be realistic the majority of the quality CU starters at KEY positions are playing their second college game, or have one year under their belt. I think this team will improve and reach its true potential next year.

I too would have liked to see WVU undefeated. But as the ECU fans chanted as that game ended "over rated". Buffs actually match up okay. Our D appears to be our strength and their D is small and made some terrible tackles today. Better yet, when they got behind they really hung their heads. Your right vegasbufffan.

Has any one thought about the fact that by playing a high energy game late on Sunday night last week and then an early game on Saturday that CU might come out a little off? That is basically 1 ½ to 2 days less to heal and prepare. I haven’t heard if there were any injuries this game, so did we have any?

If not let’s hope the extra time and the humility learned from this game helps the Buffs prepare for WVU.

By the way, kudos to EW, way to bring it, good luck on the rest of your season, you’ve proven in you’re last two games that your better then your record shows. I’d hate to be a team in the Big Sky Conference and have to play those guys. They should kill in their conference and their playoffs.

dpease, you can get Zimmer and Johnson doing the Buffs on the computer by going to the game through yahoo. You have to sign up and pay 5 or 6 bucks a month, but you can use it for basketball too, or shut it off and turn it back on next season. It's what I do, when there's nothing else. Sometimes I mute the T.V. and go with the KOA play-by-play. Zimmer rules!

As far as the game. Wow. Not what I was expecting performance-wise, but the results are what matter, right?

Being the hopeless optimist that I am, I am pleased that our guys kept their cool and had the confidence to chip away at that 21-7 halftime deficit to come out on top.

In the end, all victories are good victories.

Was also at the game.

Focobuff pretty much nails it. Although I'd add that the o-line never seemed to be in sync: very poor push on runs (more runs stuffed for loss or no gain than I can remember) and too much pressure allowed on pass plays. Cody was hurried and hit a lot more than last week. Cody seemed to have regressed: impatient, no checkdowns and missed a WIDE open Cody Crawford for six! Even threw up a couple wounded ducks that luckily weren't picked. Reminiscent of the FSU game last year.

All in all a very concerning performance, although we Buff fans can take comfort in the fact that the guys never quit and all of them, including Cody rose to the occasion in the end. I had the Buffs at 8-4 or 7-5 this year but my confidence in that assessment is definitley shaken. Simply put, we don't beat anyone else on our schedule if we turn in efforts like this. At least we have 12 days to get ready for WVU who also turned in a turkey today. Should be interesting on the 18th.

George Hypolite is a Warrior, though. Was helped off unable to walk in the late 4thQ then came back to lead the D down the stretch! A great competitor!

GO BUFFS!

Was at the game also.

Pin this one on the coaching staff. This game should not have been as close as it was.

Offense played WAY to conservatively; back to the pathetic 3 "bunched" wideout set, receiver end arounds, etc. - reminded me way too much of 2006's poor game plans.

I agree, we need to insert more power running formations. The shotgun is fine sometimes, but it hurts the running game too much to run all the time.

Offensive line was offensive today - EW's d-line dominated the line of scrimmage. No "push" by CU's line at all, only gains were on deception and individual player effort.

Also, why no plays run outside (e.g. pitches, sweeps, etc.) with either Darrell Scott or Rodney Stewart? We did not use our speed to our advantage. When you have players that can make plays in space, get them outside quickly. End arounds take too long to develop with a weak o-line.

Defensive play calling was also too conservative the entire 1st half. Started to run some blitzes in the 3rd & 4th quarter, made a big difference. Once their QB was hurried a few times, he was less effective.

Buffs won this one on talent alone. We do have some playmakers, the coaches need to take advantage of their skills!

We are not just merely crap, we are most sincerely crap. What a horrible game. 2 and 0, likely to be 2 and 10 if things don't pick up and by a whole lot. Play calling, execution, game plan, penalties, adjustments, missed assignments, motivation, coaching, decisions, anemic. I regurged on the Hawk cool aid today. Thought there were some good individual performances on the field but this is not, at this time, a contending Big 12 football team. Intramurals maybe. There is still potential but today was a huge disappointment. Hawk has a week and a half to make large improvements. He's damn lucky we won. We will be fortunate to make bowl eligible. But it was a nice afternoon at Folsom and the ladies in my section looked particularly hot.

scott and speedy should be the only two tailbacks playing during the game. sumler i'm sorry isn't cutting it. we need cody to get under center and hand the ball off to these two play makers.

now for the defensive line, i remember last year the media stating that they are the strength of our team and this year the same story. they are not good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when qb's tear us up week after week it all starts up front. experienced corners or young corners can't cover wideouts for 15 seconds and expect to stop the qb from having a completion percentage of over 75 percent.

it all starts up front and our O line and D line need some serious coaching this next week and a half. if our line doesn't fix our problems, MR SCOTT will never get his 100 yard game.

Posted by Buffalo20 on September 6, 2008 at 8:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Saw the game live. To successfully run the full-time shotgun spread you need to have a quarterback who can run, which the Buffs don't. My biggest criticisms, then, are 1) D Scott needs a power formation and 2) the ridiculous one yard outs and end arounds were tried about 12-15 times for a total of maybe 3 yards. As some others have said though, these are true freshmen/sophomores playing their first major college ball. This year may be quite the rollercoaster, but things are improving. To have this many young starters shows how far we fell the last few recruiting seasons under Barnett. Go Buffs!!

Can someone fill me in on the TD drive that tied the game? Relying on espn - my first mistake - the buffs go from their 43 to the EWU 8 without running a play. Please tell me there was a big play - pass to Smith? McKnight? Scott on a screen?

Give me hope...

From what I have read this same play calling is pure stubborness by Hawk. I remember the Independence bowl was the same garbage. We kept running the same ineffective plays (running wide on every other play) and we're 3 and out only if we did not turn the ball over. Then in the second half we go to a more conventional attack (run on first and second down up the gut and throw only when needed) and we almost climb back in the game, but its too late. If we are looking for an epiphany from Hawk I think we can forget it. All I can say is we are rolling in for the WVU game and we are pumped to party, tee it up and check out that other team that plays some pro football down the road.

Sorry for the double post, but it looks like my post on the front page missed the discussion going on over here...

After that 1st half (and beginning of the 3rd quarter), I'm thrilled that we were able to come away with a win. Any win. I just couldn't stomach all the national media talking about another FCS loss.

My thoughts on the game:

Cody missed a couple big throws, 2 almost sure fire TD's. I can't believe he threw that pick, it couldn't have been anymore telegraphed-- we had the WR split wide across the far hash (I think it was Crawford, but I'm not 100%), isolated, and he didn't even get any seperation from the CB on him, and the inside LB had it read the whole time (could have been a nickel back). That was an unforced error, Cody locking into his presnap read.

Josh Smith is the playmaker we've been lacking. People get excited everytime he touches the ball. (now he just needs to hold onto the ball)... His nephew pancaked a dude while carrying the ball-- Seriously, he stiff armed a defender onto his back, it was great.

If you would have told me Jalil Brown was the D-1 player and Brynsen Brown was the D-2 player, I wouldn't have believed you after seeing Jalil get dragged for 10 yards into the endzone. It was ugly.

Special Teams had better get it together. Smith needs to stop fumbling, the kick return team needs to stop letting the ball hit the ground, and we can't miss FG's. At the same time, Smith is making up for some of the mistakes with his amazing speed and vision.

Overall, great resiliency from the team. Cody Hawkins kind of embodies the whole team's mentality, which is that no matter how many mistakes they make, they're going to keep on fighting and trying to make plays-- that was evident in the 2nd half, where they outscored EW 24-3.

At the game also,

hope they are saving some of their plays for the future games (sweeps, somthing outside the tackles) cody i thought had one bad throw that they returned for TD. D.Scott is going to be special once our o-line gets it together!! His run in the first quarter when he leap a d-back was awsome!! Ugly win but we will take it!! Defense steped up when in the 4th when it counted!!

Buffalo20-- I agree with you on the ineffective dinks and dunks... Cody doesn't have the arm strength to be throwing 3 yard outs to the far side of the field, it's just futile. We need to be stretching the field more often to keep the defense honest.

And I also agree with those who are a little skeptical on an almost exclusively shotgun attack--How many 1st down plays went for negative yards today? It was waaay too many. We've got solid backs that shouldn't be losing 6-7 yards on a handoff for crying out loud. Some of that also has to be put on ineffective line play, but some of that is play calling and coaches not putting their players in the best position to win.

Typical that DC cant report decently - this found elsewhere:

CU’s most serious injury was to linebacker Shaun Mohler, who suffered a possible broken collarbone and could be out for the season. He was to be examined Saturday night . . . .

receiver Jarrod Darden, of Keller, Texas – recently suffered a broken ankle in practice that required surgery. Central High School coach Bart Helsley told The Keller (Texas) Citizen that Darden, a 6-foot-4, 211-pounder, was out for the season .

Once again, I couldnt get even radio. I'll try the yahoo thing nextime
someone tell me if we tried blitzing at all? If we did it must have been ill conceived. If we cant get any pressure with the down linemen we are going to have to mix it up on the pass rush with both the LB's and the secondary.
From what I have read here before me, it sounds like we have to mix up theplay calling a little more too. I get the feeling Hawk is trying to emulate the Utah offense Myer used when he was there. The shotgun 100 percent of the time sucks almost as bad as never using it.

You can also subscribe to Sirius radio; I listened to the CU broadcast (and it didn't sound pretty until the very end)!
The positive; the team didn't give up, kept struggling (they were obviously struggling), and played until the whistle. You do that in games, and in life, good things will happen to/for you.

The shot-gun is not a running formation, why does Dan Hawkins insist on wasting the the talents of the best freshman running back in america. I think if the Buffs want to show how good Darrell Scott can be, they should incorporate the power-I formation and just run straight at a defense, run blocking techniques are much easier to teach a young offensive line, Dan Hawkins should be willing to be more flexible and not be to stubborn about sticking with the shot-gun. A good coach can inspire his players, but a great coach will design his offense to get the most out of his player's skills, so far I don't see that with Hawkins, I was sold on him as an inventive coach, but some of his coaching decisions are beginning to test my support of him. Our inablity to line up and pound an inferior team is going to cost us big time, especially in conference play.

lakotastargazer: I also agree that Darrell Scott's talents are being wasted by only giving him the ball out of the shotgun formation. We have seen some great things out of Scott so far, but I would love to see him run with a fullback in front of him.

Now, I think Rodney Stewart's talents can be exploited out of the shotgun. Hawkins needs to find some balance in the offense in which we can run both shotgun sets and pound it down your throat sets.

A win is a win, but this one was damn ugly. Good to see WVU has a crack in their shell. Hawk and staff should be looking at film tomorrow and maybe give Skip a call. Today's win was as big as it gets, considering what would have happened if they lost. For the Buffs to fight back and not give in was impressive, and I think this experience in a tight game against a VERY GOOD TEAM will pay major dividends down the road...

Last time I checked, Mark Helfrich is the Offensive Coordinator, not Hawk...Helfrich calls the plays, that's his job...Scott's TWO games into his collegiate career and some experts here believe he's being wasted, wow...this team has an abundance of inexperience, I'd suggest considering that factor before you expect them to challenge Mizzou for the North Title THIS YEAR...Cody threw a pick, big deal, so does every other starting QB in college football...get over it...last week, Daniel threw a pick, Ganz threw two, Harrell threw one, Mark Sanchez threw one and had FOUR TIPPED PASSES in his first eight incompletions and he's 6'3"...Reesing threw one last week, so did Zac Robinson, McGee threw two...need I go on? Ganz threw another one today, two more for Harrell, two more for Zac Robinson, two for Bradford, McCoy's thrown his first INT of the year as well...even if Cody threw one a game, it would be an improvement over 2007...IMO, these inexperienced players will only get better as the season progresses and will definately go bowling again...GO BUFFS!

In my opinion, Hawkins gets consistently out coached. When an apposing player says that your only as good as the other teams in the Big Sky, and you have superior players, you are getting out coached. There are only a couple of coaches on Colorado that understand Big Time football, and unfortunately the head coach, defensive coordinator, and offensive coordinator, are NOT included. Hawkins will never win the Big 12, let alone a National Championship, his teams are too inconsistent for this level of football. And Hawkins has never understood field position football; you have to have kids who can catch punts and possess the football. If you are going to turn the football over once or twice in each game, then the big returns mean nothing. Hold on to the damn ball!!! 6 straight losses coming up folks, be ready for ugly days ahead.

Posted by TallyBuff on September 7, 2008 at 9:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

While I am skeptical about the no-huddle spread, recall that both Hawks spent spring break '07 in Gainesville. Watch a UF game and you will see that the CU offense is a Hawkins' spin on the Gators' offense run by Meyer. The blocking schemes are essentially the same, the looping z motion and routes, all of those x and z reverses, and the use of FBs and TEs lining up outside the tackles, in the slot, as WRs or in the backfield. Like it or not, CU has installed this offense and is going to run it. Suggesting that we change the offense now simply displays a jarring ignorance of the time it takes to install an offense and the limits the NCAA places on practice time, to say nothing of the fact that the players have to attend classes (now matter how talented one's Cub Scouts).

Posted by COSBUFF on September 7, 2008 at 10:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Agree they will get better. However Helfrich has to be more creative with his use of those backs. I could not help but think of Shawn Watson as we ran Scott every first down and EW keyed on it and limited Scott to 3yd/carry (13 carries/39 yds, 22 of which came on one play). I think Helfrich is a good OC but he did not show it this game.

Cody did regress this week - in case some folks didn't see the game the missed reads were consistently throwing to the check down reciever when other options were open down field. This happened a bit too often on 3rd downs ending drives. Thus his high completion percentage. However if you were at the game you would agree that Cody did not shine at all. His advantage over other QB's is his football acumen versus athletic talents. He needs to make better decisions against WV.

One other thing the Buffs need to work on - penalties! Way too many against lower level teams. The Big 12 will make us pay dearly for such mental lapses. I think the youth has something to do with it and it will get better but given our schedule we don't have the luxury of time.

Big positive was the D stepping up and really shutting them down in the second half. I like the adjustments that were made to get a bit more pressure on the QB and our defense to a man played much better in the second half. It is nice to have that momentum going up against WV with their explosive O.

To any of you who think that EW was not a good team were not at the game and did not see the box from last week against TT. Although the score had to do more with our mistakes they were an impressive team.

Looking forward to a better game from our Buffs in a week and a half.

DocinTucson basically cut and pasted the same post as he wrote on Neill's article. No need to repeat myself here, but Hawkins is getting this team in the right direction. The teams of the past 2 years would never have been able to come back like that. That was coaching adjustments and players stepping up. He was not out coached yesterday. And dude, what another opposing player who is a crybaby says means nothing. We have superior players, we made the right adjustments, and we WON. The W is what is important. The margin doesn't matter. The fact is we WON. Now tell me how he got outcoached yesterday.

Here's my prediction...should the Buffs take down West Virginia moving to 3-0 on the 2008 campaign, I'm going to read how "if they don't improve yada, yada, yada, it's going to get ugly against the Seminoles." Despite the fact WVU lost to a team they beat at home 48-7 last season, a victory over the Mountaineers on national television would remain a huge accomplishment for this very young, inexperienced Buffs team. Speaking of accomplishments, Josh Smith, #1 ranked KO Returner in the nation(50 yds per), slightly ahead of the much heralded Jeremy Maclin. Cody Hawkins, Top 20 in completions per game (24 per/tied for #17), trails only Reesing and Harrell in the Big 12. BTW, his supposed "dump offs" have resulted in an average of 7.09 yds per completion as compared to Reesing (7.42) and Harrell (8.01).Too early to really gauge how the Buffs compare overall statistically in the Big 12 since everyone hasn't played the same level of opponent, but they're 5th in Total Defense, 11th in Total Offense. They'll likely wind up near the lower end of several catagories heading into conference play due to the level of their next two OOC opponents while others are playing cupcakes. I remain optimistic where this team is headed.

Hola Rodrigo. I wish I was bi-lingual, but my high school Spanish is woefully lacking. Please do as the farmer did when asked if he was angry because his jackass kicked him. "Why should I be angry because he behaved like what he is."

I bleed silver and gold. Suffered through Fairbanks and Mac's early years. I'm pleased with the direction we're going. To carry the analogy from above, how can we be upset with Frosh and Sophs playing like what they are. Will we win 6 and go bowling again? I hope so, but Hawk's enthusiasm will continue to pull in the recruits. Patience is the watchword.

Young or not this team is going in the right direction. I think that we can all agree that last year or the year before this game would have been a loss. I am very proud of the composure and fight the team showed by coming back and winning. I mean really. The Buffs gave up 3 pts in the second half. That is listening to your coaches and what they see.

Obviously, Cody did not have a great game. Remember, he is a sophomore. I think what you saw against CSU is the real Cody Hawkins and that was one smart player.

I love the Buffs through and through but I will admit that they have some things they need to work on. Tell me a team out there that doesn't.

For all the haters out there, if you are a fan of another team why don't you spend some time disecting your own team? For a CU team that, according to you, sucks so badly, you sure are spending a lot of time watching us. Me thinks, some fans out there are afraid of what they are seeing in Boulder and don't want to see the Buffaloes run free in the Big 12.

If you are Buff fans, first admit that this one was well on its way to a loss except the team did something we haven't seen the last few years, step up, adjust and win. Then lets have a serious conversation about the x's and o's. This was a bigger victory for us than it should have been. But I bet those young players learned somethings and I look forward to seeing what they do for the rest of the season and beyond.

GO BUFFS!

two things - first, penalties hurt us but turnovers killed us! Smiths fumble and codys pic gave them two scores.

Second, can't run from the spread? Tell that to that kid from mizzou last year. What was his name? Temple? Didn't he rush for about 200 yds in their bowl game?

At least there are SOME Buff supporters on here! We showed our Youth by getting to trouble in this game, but showed remarkable poise to keep it together and pull out a win.

Dizonrocks,

SJSU struggles with UC Davis in 1st game largely correlate to not having a clear cut idea who their 1st team qb was.

Kyle Reed did not play until very late in game and played well against UC Davis. I think it's safe assumption that had he played entire game score is probably bit more side of SJSU.

That's at times the way early season games go when trying to find qb.

He got the start against NU due to his performance in first game. After his performance against UC Davis and his admirable performance against Husker's, they have a QB that they can rely on unless the concussion he suffered against NU keep's him out.

For his sake, I hope not because he did play well in tough environment for first career start.

luvdaskers...it's pure speculation to assume SJSU would have had better results against UCD with Reed playing the entire game...he took over with 8:30 remaining in the THIRD QUARTER, hardly "late"...he handled four drives, including the desperation 4th down TD pass with 8 seconds remaining...not that it matters, but the point is, SJSU struggled with unranked Bowl Subdivision program UC Davis, needing a miracle finish to win the game at home...and the Huskers led 14-12 after three quarters...to suggest that SJSU is somehow a tougher opponent than EWU based on their "D1" status simply makes no sense based on how SJSU and EWU have performed ON THE FIELD, classification aside...Reed or no Reed, IMO, EWU rolls the Spartans in their house...

On Oct 18 will be when the pusskers have a losing record. They may draw even against Baylor but outside the Bears and the first three eclairs they may not win another game.
Go ahead and sputter some more luvie...that might help.....chuckle
