Eagles have upset of Buffs in mind

QB Nichols believes team can improve on loss to Texas Tech

Please download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player, or enable JavaScript for your browser to view the video player.

Matt Nichols remembers the scores as if they just went by on the ticker.

Cal Poly 29, San Diego State 27 ... Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32 ... North Dakota State 27, Minnesota 21 ... And, of course, Montana State 19, Colorado 10, the only time a Football Championship Subdivision team has ever played at Folsom Field.

Make no mistake about it, Eastern Washington -- led by the reigning Big Sky player of the year in Nichols -- is making the trip to Boulder believing it can return home with an improbable victory.

"That was a big thing for the Big Sky Conference," Nichols said of Montana State spoiling Dan Hawkins' CU debut two years ago. "No matter who it is, you root for your own conference when they play up a level. But because of that game we don't think they will be overlooking us at all. And we don't think that they should be. We're going to be ready and so will they."

The Eagles, who are ranked 10th in latest FCS poll, were not quite ready for prime time last Saturday when they took the field against No. 12 Texas Tech in Lubbock. EWU fell behind 21-0 before taking a deep breath and outscoring the Red Raiders 17-7 in the second quarter.

Texas Tech led 35-24 after three quarters before punching in a couple of late touchdowns to make a 49-24 victory look a little more lopsided.

"We gave them some turnovers and dropped passes. The jitters got to a few people I guess and it ended up being a factor," Nichols said. "As soon as we settled down a little bit we were even with them rest of the game. ... In our opinion, we didn't play nearly as good a game as we could have. I had a couple bad throws and we probably had 10 dropped passes."

EWU is looking at Saturday's game as a re-do. Another chance to upset a Big 12 foe and make SportsCenter.

"We think we can play with these guys. We have the talent," Nichols said. "We feel like we have a national championship team here."Appalachian State went on to win the FCS title last season after making national headlines with the win at the Big House to open the campaign. The Mountaineers defeated EWU 38-35 in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

Nichols finished his 2007 season ranked eighth in the FCS in passing efficiency rating (156.5), fifth in passing offense (288.0) and fifth in total offense (318.2). He passed for 3,744 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a sophomore after throwing 17 interceptions (equaling a school record) and only eight touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.

The hiring of Beau Baldwin to replace Paul Wulff, who left to become head coach at Washington State, should actually improve Nichols' numbers during his third season running the Eagles' version of the spread offense. He recruited the standout signal caller and was his position coach when he entered the program.

Nichols notched his seventh 300-yard passing game in his 25-game career when he completed 36-of-61 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown against Texas Tech. His completions and attempts in that game both ranked as the second-most in school history.

"He can just keep getting better," Baldwin said at his weekly press conference. "There were times last year when there were things he could have done to spread the ball out even more, and that's something I want to see him do better this season."

Baldwin left EWU last season to become the head coach at his alma mater, Central Washington, where he was Jon Kitna's backup during his playing days. When Wulff left for Pullman the appeal of coaching a talented junior class led by Nichols was too much to resist.

"You never expect a freshman that struggles a little bit to come back and be player of the year in the Big Sky. But if you would have asked me going into last year if he had the talent to do that, I would have said yes," Baldwin said. "And obviously he proved that. ... I think he would trade 100 Big Sky MVP trophies for one Big Sky championship. That's his mindset."

The Eagles are hoping to improve on their 9-4 record in 2007 and advance deeper in the FCS playoffs this season. A victory over a team that plays in a BCS conference would obviously be an incredible momentum builder.

"When you look at the Big 12 Conference, it's teams like Texas Tech and Missouri with smaller, faster players who are doing well offensively. That's because they can spread you out," Nichols said. "We definitely think that's an advantage for us. We're just very confident in what we do on offense. ... Personally, I think we have six or seven guys on offense who could easily be playing on Division I teams. Guys from little high schools who just didn't get recruited."

Nichols isn't ready to predict that EWU is going to be the latest FCS team to end up on the right end of a shocking score. After all, as part of his preparation for Texas Tech he watched the film of CU's 31-26 victory in Lubbock last season.

"I feel they're as good as Texas Tech," Nichols said. "Just because they're not ranked 12th in nation it doesn't mean they're any less of a team. ... It's never fun starting off 0-2. At the same time, we grew a lot last week and we'll grow a lot this week no matter what happens. When we go back down to our level the game will be slowed down a little bit."

Buffs have to stay focused and get a pass rush going. We will be fine on offense, but this could be a game where the defense gains some confidence.

I am confident of a CU win, it just may be the kind that leaves fans grumbling during the almost-two weeks before the West Virginia game. I'd feel better about the prospects of a dominating game if we had Anthony Wright and Jimmy Smith. Fortunately, these two guys have the extra time to get well for WVU.

Posted by nepabuff on September 5, 2008 at 7:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I hate to say it, but WVU is probably going to stomp the buffs.

Hawkins just does not have this team playing very well.

Posted by SnowBuff on September 5, 2008 at 7:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Above comment is idiotic. Look at the prior history of CU's first game. Since when did they come out and play "lights out" especially against CSU? NOT IN THIS DECADE. The only other stomping of CSU in THIS DECADE was in 2001, when, yes, the BUFFS LOST TO FRESNO STATE in their first game. So let's not worry to much about how well they are playing until after EWU.

Nepa's Kenny.

Just me yammerin' but I'd love to see CU run, run, run and run some more. Put up about 300 yards rushing, control the game, keep the EW offense off the field and simply grind down the Eagles d. D. Scott's first 100 game...

Posted by bouldabuff on September 5, 2008 at 8:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree Rod - the best way to handle a "high-powered" offense is to keep them off the field. I'm hoping we run hurry up for the first couple of possessions to tire them out then give them a steady dose of smash mouth.

Posted by montanabuff on September 5, 2008 at 8:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I concur - If the Buffs have something special planned for the Mountaineers (plays, formations, use of personnel), we certainly don't want to have to show our cards against Eastern Washington. While I would love a stats bonanza, a slow, steady, dominating performance on both sides of the ball would suit me fine.

Run, run, run - then cut the receivers loose!

Go Buffs!

Posted by zonabuff on September 5, 2008 at 8:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I hope they do make it to Sportscenter, as the victims of the 1-2 punch: 100 yards receiving for uncle, 100 yards rushing for nephew!

Posted by smokey on September 5, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think we can get through this one with short passes and power running (w/ a little Rodney Stewert mixed in there for the big play). That will build confidence, keep the playbook relatively veiled, and force future opponents to pay a little less attention to the deep ball as we move into the intense part of the schedule.

I hate to get so elaborate with an opponent like EW, but I think a lot of people feel this could be a tougher test than the lambs of the north.

Posted by lakotastargazer on September 5, 2008 at 9:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

this is the perfect game for the Buffs to work on their running game, don't get me wrong, I love the spread offense, but when the weather turns bad, we're going to need to put cody under center and play smash-mouth football! this game gives us that chance.

the CU offense against csu was very bland and i think it will be again against ew.it seemed like thy ran about 10 different plays and still won by 21.I expect more of the same against ew.Bring out the big guns against wv and ut.I believe thats when we'll see "real Hawk ball",but 4 now keep it simple, leave with a win and dont give future opp gameplans 2 study.GO BUFFS!!!

In other words, Tech still doesn't have a defense

Posted by nwbuff32 on September 5, 2008 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Don't worry guys, Nepa is just trying to stir the pot.

You can see from his handle (Nepotism+Buff) that he does not like Hawk or his son. Most likely a Husker fan. Also known around here as Kenny.

As for the play book, it was barely even touched. Just watch the replay of the CSU game and thats all the proof you need.

Buff insiders that talk with coaches believe that the offense will be a lot more creative against WVU. Thats when you will see more than 20% of the playbook.

Posted by BuffTime on September 5, 2008 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Not only does Tech not have a decent defense, but they are completely one dimensional. So is EWU. That is why they both put up big passing numbers. That is all they can do.

CU is by far more dangerous on many more fronts. Seriously think EWU can contain the power rushing, flash rushing, AND passing game that the Buffs are blessed with this year? NO WAY!

I too am looking for a web-feed of the game. There was one last year for the non-TV games but I don't remember who had it... I was in Europe at the time and the signal was blocked (really annoying). Hoping to get a chance to see some of this game. Planning on being at the WVU game in person if I can get tickets.

Posted by nepabuff on September 5, 2008 at 10:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I noticed the CSU QB had all day to throw, even when he was sacked he had been standing in the pocket for over 5 seconds.

Got to do better than that before WVU.

There is no live or delayed television of the game, and no like live webcast; it’s radio’s weekend to sole source it live...the BuffVision jumbotron feed of the game will be available on a tape delay basis for BuffsTV subscribers early next week...

Thats too bad, better just get in cars now and get over here. GO BUFFS

Nepabuff: Yeah, it was frustrating watching how much time Farris got. But I think the whole plan was to start blitzing him if he was having a lot of success and leading scoring drives. I think the plan was to see if we could pick him off with more guys back and only a four man rush and see if our rush guys could get to him some. They did, but mostly because the pass coverage was good. We also picked Farris successfully a few times. But yeah, I agree. I was yelling at the TV several times "Blitz him! Don't let him just stand back there and throw!" The D will have to mix in some blindside blitzes, etc. against other QBs to get some pressure. I don't think our front four alone are going to get the time and pressure on other teams that we enjoyed against CSU.

Posted by cubuff85 on September 5, 2008 at 11:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I see a 42-17 win for the Buffs and there will be a lot of blitzing. In addition, about 300 yards rushing will get the job done. GO BUFFS!

"EWU is looking at Saturday's game as a re-do. Another chance to upset a Big 12 foe and make SportsCenter."

"We think we can play with these guys. We have the talent," Nichols said. "We feel like we have a national championship team here"

I don't see a 42-17 win, this team has a lot of confidence.

For those who requested a little info on EWU:

http://goeags.cstv.com/sports/m-footb...

Here also is their roster:
http://goeags.cstv.com/sports/m-footb...

A few interesting tidbits for the first link; They had 364 total yards of offense of which 341 were from passing. So not much of a running game from them. Also, hopefully the Buffs will keep tabs on a guy named Tony Davis who is a receiver that seems to be a favorite target of Nichols the QB. Though there are 2 other receivers of note as well: Brynsen Brown and Aaron Boyce.

From the second link, you'll notice not much size on either line. The Buffs should manhandle them all game. Buffs have size, athleticism/conditioning, and altitude all on their side.

I reaffirm that the key to blowing these guys out is the running game. Wear them down and keep their offense off the field. Summler will earn his stripes in this game and DS and RS will put up some big numbers too.

Posted by NorCalLovesDaBuffs on September 5, 2008 at 12:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I doubt we can hold them to 17 points with our pass defense. The way I look at it if we can't win this game we wouldn't be the best team in the Big Sky Conference. Lets just go out there and get it done with our superior size and speed.

Okay, so we have Kenny/Tall/ramidiot here again. Just ignore him...he'll shut up by tomorrow afternoon. I think some of us are being cautious after what happened two years ago. But this team is light years better than that team. Also, we did beat Texas Tech in Lubbock last year...and we're a better team now. CSU is Div 1A football, and we spanked them while not playing nearly our best. I'm not too worried about tomorrow. This is a Div 1AA school. We have very good Div 1A talent. I just wish I could watch it on the web from VA. Go Buffs.

EWU is in trouble. The Buffs will roll. Tech is soft, always has been and that's the truth. EWU will be overwhelmed with a pysical team who's just starting to feel real good about themselves. Look for a big number by the O and a small number by the D, like 42-17.

We don't know what WVU has because they haven't played anyone and won't by the time we see them (sorry ECU) but we need to be ready for the pass.

The game-planning of keeping the ball away has to apply to Missouri more than any other team we play. And we have a real chance to do it with a big, but inexperienced, line, several good backs looking to breakout and be great, and a QB that looked poised in every aspect last week. We need to expose MU's weak D. Of course if everything goes well, it'll be close but if we don't lean on their D, big time, it'll be another blowout.

Posted by BuffulanceMan on September 5, 2008 at 3:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Agreed - Ignore NepaDousche.

As far as Saturday - I agree that our O-Line will have their way with EWU's DLine. They are smaller than CSU. Because of that, and with us likely looking to control the clock, look for us to run. A LOT. Cody showed what he can do with a 137 passer rating last week. This week's for the Backs, with a heavy dosage of Sumler & Scott. Not sure how much of Speedy we'll see w/ that fumble last week. I don't remember him that much last week after that.

As far as our D goes, I think you'll see more blitzing as well. We'll need to get to the QB this week, for sure, and bringing a CB and/or an LB will likely do the trick since they'll need to doubleteam Girthy and Nichols.

Go Buffs!!!

PS - What's the line on this game?

Posted by BuffTime on September 5, 2008 at 3:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think Speedy will be in the game plenty. Afterward, Hagan said that they limited him after that fumble so as not to hurt his confidence. My guess is that they stressed how to properly hold the ball all week in practice with him and J-Fly and both will play a bunch.

If you keep a kid out of a game like EWU where there is quite a bit of good experience to be had and likely easy on the ego as well then you really miss a good opportunity for their growth as a player. They're not likely to limit the kid this week only to throw him back into the thick of it against WV or FSU later in the season.

Posted by RalphieRepresentah4 on September 5, 2008 at 3:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

anybody who thinks the playbook wasn't held back is crazy!the playbook is about 4 inches thick and i dvr'ed the game and like i say, they ran about 10 plays.the best is yet 2 come.by the way nepabuff, you should know all about 4 inches or maybe even less!!!GO BUFFS!!!!!!

Posted by BuffTime on September 5, 2008 at 3:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Not to boost nepabuff's ego, but the CU playbook is considerably larger than 4 inches thick. Cody gave an interview before the CSU game and indicated closer to 2 to 3 times that thick. Not every page is a separate play (unless it was written by B. Callahan), but yes your point is right on. CU went plain vanilla against CSU. Did just enough to muscle their way through to a win.

The EWU game will be more or less the same, but with a few more wrinkles tailored for them. WVU and FSU will see quite a bit more. Texas and NU will see more that won't be revealed until their games. All of the teams with multiple weapons try to hold back as much as possible to keep some surprise advantage later in the season.

uh... houston here-still trying out how to create mutiple names for my posts. Guess we'll have to wait to see the score here Sat night. Didn't we go through this same thing with the feeds the last two years? Season ticket holders want this game instead of CSU in Denver? Save the blatther about a cancel-heard it and still dont believe it.

I still like the ECU game on TV for those not in Colorado. WVU will lose that game and will be pissed when they come in to Boulder. aintthemd- I will be in the gold lot at 3pm on the 18th if you want to have a face to face. You can sit with us in the suite.

Posted by Saheeb on September 5, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

BuffTime: Good analysis and posts. I agree. EWU SHOULD be the kind of game where they give the inexperienced guys an opportunity to really gain some confidence by making some big plays. They've got to get the bugs out (no more bad snaps and timing snafus!!) and we probably can't just rely on our front four to pressure the QB. They don't want to show everything in advance of WVU and FSU, but we likely can't let this QB sit back and throw like we allowed Farris.

Keep ignoring the moron fans from other teams. Like small children who just want attention if you ignore their tantrums they'll get no attention and go away....

i'm not sure last years team was any more "up and down" than any other mediocre team, playing a very difficult schedule. interesting, but really outstanding teams are rarely "up and down", precisely because they are outstanding. consistancy is a trait of good, and bad teams. mediocre teams can have great days, but are, by nature, limited in their ability to perform at a consistantly high level, game in and game out. they remain, therefore, inherently: "up and down". the goal of every program, in every sport, is outstanding, high level play, every time out on the field/court.

Posted by salsajohn on September 5, 2008 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm gonna give me fellow Buff fans a heads up, a heads up 1 and 1/2 years in advance. I know who are next starting QB for CU is going to be, or at least who I hope he will be. And CU has already offered him a full ride.

Danny Spond, who as a Jr., is starting QB at Columbine highschool in south Denver. Danny will likely be a 4 or maybe even 5 star recruit by the time the next recruiting cycle rolls around. He was invited to an under armor QB camp in Florida this summer and played lights out. After the camp, I’m reading he is considered a top 10 QB prospect in the entire class of 2010.

The kid is 6'4 and 220lbs so Talli Nepa Ram will be disappointed that height is not an issue.

Should he come to CU, he'd be a true freshmen when Cody was a Sr. Keep an eye on this kid fellow Buff fans.

I think what concerns me most about this no-huddle offense is the difference in time of possession. Take away the 18 play drive in the second half and the time of possession would have been staggering. Even with that drive, CSU held the ball longer than we did (roughly 32 minutes to our 27, thanks CUBuffs.com). I don't think that will get the job done Saturday. Farris was playing in his first game and you could tell. I was there and could not believe how much he held the ball instead of throwing it away. This kid from EWU is a far superior quarterback to Farris and if we allow him to be on the field too long he will kill us. The good news from Sunday was that the Buffs are capable of putting together a long drive and will be able to do it more consistently when they get rid of stupid penalties.

That being said, Tech's defense is not on the same level as ours. We have beat that team the last couple of years, even when we were awful at 2-10. Our offense that year was horrible and we still managed to beat them.

As far as the consistency question, I think it unfair to just throw up W's and L's without considering the opponent. However, I think we can all agree that it was frustrating last year to see them be soo close to a really good team and yet not achieve it due to consistent good play. ASU, FSU, KU, ISU. Those are all games we could have won had we seen the same effort week in and week out that we saw against say, OU. That is what you get with a young team. I am fine with that last year. We have another young team this year but the difference is the experience level is higher.

I have rambled on long enough. Go BUFFS! Stomp the Eagles!

RIBUFF

P.S. Anyone else notice how the Buffs went for the jugular in the 4th when Cody Hawkins went 35 yds to Kendrick Celestine to set up D. Scott's TD? Fight, Fight. Fight, Fight, Fight!
