Change in store for Buffs

Offense undergoes 'considerable' shift for this week's game

He waited all day, but a delivery man never showed up with a box of solutions for what ails the Colorado offense on Mark Helfrich's birthday Tuesday.

"We need that," Helfrich said. "I would like that very much."

It doesn't mean the 35-year-old offensive coordinator doesn't have some changes in mind. In fact, Helfrich said CU coaches "have made considerable changes for this week" in advance of the Buffs' game at Texas A&M on Saturday (Noon, no television).

The Buffs are coming off the first shutout in the past 20 years of Colorado football and have struggled for most of the season to move the ball with any consistency on the ground or through the air.

Coaches said the Buffs had a strong practice their first day back in action after losing 58-0 to Missouri, and they're doing their best to fix problems and find answers. The Buffs have been outscored 139-41 in their first four games in Big 12 play.

The "considerable changes" won't be anything as dramatic as changing quarterbacks or other depth chart adjustments.

Helfrich and coach Dan Hawkins said sophomore Cody Hawkins and freshman Tyler Hansen will both continue to see significant action againstthe Aggies. The changes more likely will be subtle in nature, but no specifics were offered.

"Just things that we haven't done as much of or differently," Helfrich said. "There are certain things that we've got to be able to do, and there are certain things that we absolutely cannot do based on who we are.

"We've got to kind of tend toward those things that we're better at and live with the fact that we're not the complete package right now. And that's okay."

CU needs to find something that works if it hopes to keep its bowl hopes alive in the final four weeks of the regular season.

Compounding the offensive problems this week will be a second consecutive game in hostile territory.

Kyle Field is home to the Aggies in College Station, Texas, and A&M fans -- the 12th Man as they are called -- have built a reputation for making it one of the loudest and most intimidating places to play in the nation.

The stadium is built close to the field and the crowd can be deafening at times. They lock arms and move in unison making the building sway.

It's not the ideal location to be traveling when with a young program that hasn't fared well on the road recently. Since Dan Hawkins took over the program in 2006, the Buffs are 2-9 in true road games, with both of those victories coming last season at Baylor and at Texas Tech.

The Buffs are 0-2 in true road games this season and 1-1 in neutral site games, though referring to the Sept. 27 game at Jacksonville against Florida State as a neutral site game is a stretch.

"Any time you go on the road, I think everything gets that much tougher," Hawkins said. "It throws you out of your routine. It throws you off a little bit."

Throughout the past 20 years, the Buffs have been among the nation's toughest teams on the road. They rank 12th best in Division I since 1988 with a 59-41-1 record in road games. Miami, Florida State and Ohio State have been the toughest road teams over the same span, each boasting winning percentages above .700.

"You have to draw yourself closer to the center of your focus just because so many things are different," Hawkins said. "You can't let the travel or the food or the bed or anything distract you.

"Then obviously when you get into the other team's stadium there is a void of emotion. There is an overwhelming emotion when the other team does things well, and practically nothing when you do well."

Hawkins believes the Buffs are up to the task this week, despite their most recent performance and their track record of losing on the road. He said he has seen improvement from the Buffs this season in a lot of ways. He said the team identity is one of "scrappers and survivors."

"We have to be able to scrap because the teams that we're playing are so talented, so good, that we have to scrap and claw and work for everything we're going to get out there," linebacker Jeff Smart said.

The Buffs should enjoy more success offensively this week than they did during the first shutout in 20 years last week at Missouri.

The A&M defense is reeling. The Aggies have allowed more than 400 yards of offense in five of eight games this season, including each of the past four games.

The past two weeks have been the worst for coach Mike Sherman's defense. It allowed 561 yards of offense to Texas Tech two weeks ago and 574 yards to Iowa State last week.

Listening to Sherman explain his defensive shortcomings is similar to listening to CU offensive coaches this season.

"We're constantly looking at it, trying to tweak things, trying to make sure our players are able to fit into our scheme," Sherman said. "We mix it up. We pressure. We play zone. We play some man. So it's a work in progress, as I've said all year long."

wow. finally. realization from this coaching staff that the O line and a lack of WR's has crippled the offense. Do what little we do decently, and do it a lot. It should be enough against A&M.

Didn't I read that Missouri's defense was 100th in the nation? What makes us think we can do this week what we haven't done all season? (score)

I'm in line with fish and vk. About the only thing more disappointing than the Buffs' o this season has been the coverage by the Camera. I could write this crap from 2,000 miles away without even picking up the telephone.

FInally...Helfrich realizes he's scripting games plans for a team that doesn't have the talent to execute them.

I won't complain too much, at least they are starting to get it.

"The "considerable changes" won't be anything as dramatic as changing quarterbacks or other depth chart adjustments."

If we continue to run the "spread" offense, with Cody coming in at times, things will not change at all!

Wake up Helfrich!! Line up in the "Power I", utilize Scott, Stewart, and Sumler and pound the friggin ball down oppenents throats! Let the run set up the pass, throw an option play in here and there, utilize our TE's and leave Cody on the bench.

Then we may have a chance.

At the beginnig of the season, if anyone had said CU would be 4-4 at this point, people would wonder who you think CU will upset to get that 4th win?

Wow it's amazing, how short fans memories are.

mgmt - while I agree for the most part (4-4 is where most reasonable fans hoped we'd be) the way CU has looked in losing those four and winning two of the four hasn't exactly inspired a lot confidence. So speaking solely for myself, it's not as much about short memory as week-to-week worries for the immediate future.

Posted by mgmtgrad on October 29, 2008 at 7:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Your right rodrigo, but that was before key members of the O-line went down. I know the last four have been ugly, but the future still looks better then the past.

Posted by montanabuff on October 29, 2008 at 7:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Missouri has lousy defensive numbers because their offense scores so quickly (last in the Big 12 in time of possession), and the Tigers are usually ahead by so much (that includes NU, nepa) that the defense gives up yardage for time.

Texas A&M has lousy defensive numbers because .... well, they're just lousy. In the 100's in almost every defensive category.

If the Buffs can get through the first quarter with some momentum (that is, don't let the Aggies score on their first possession, don't turn the ball over on theirs), confidence will continue to grow as success on offense is rewarded.

Go Buffs!

DC coverage is woefully pathetic. Wish the editors would realize what a joke Ringo is.

mgmtgrad - the point is not the record, it is how obviously uncompetitive the team is. In their four losses, they were competitive for what - a total of 3 quarters ? That's pathetic.

With the same record, had they responded late against KU, fought back against UT or even showed up for MU - and still lost all 3 - it would say something completely different about this team.

A team cannot overcome ineptitude at the coordinator positions or lack of effort. This team is too soft, undisciplined and unprepared by the staff right now to realistically find success on the field.

Lets hope they man up and prove each of those points wrong.

Posted by 1GoBuffs1 on October 29, 2008 at 8:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

mgmgrad- it's not the fact that they are 4-4, it's the fact that they don't look like they are improving. 4-4 is acceptable if some of the games they lost were close or they looked like they belong on the same field as some of the higher ranked teams they've lost to. I think most of us are just looking for improvement week to week, but we seem to be regressing.

Posted by GoBuffs05 on October 29, 2008 at 9:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The manner in which this team has lost is definitely the most distressing thing about this season. If we had hung with Texas and Missouri through the first 2 or 3 quarters and then just got beat due to their superior athletes and depth, that would not bother me nearly as much as these debacles we have seen. Even Kansas was a winnable game, but Mangino just outcoached Hawk in the second half. I'm not calling for anyone's head, but give me something to believe in.

Posted by chuckpizzle on October 29, 2008 at 9:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The Aggies are going to pound Colorado. The game is at Kyle Field in front of the 12th Man, and they are scoring 35-40 points a game on far better defenses. Colordao might get some points on the board, but not nearly enough to combat the 35+ they give up.

Aggies 38
Buffs 20

Posted by BuffulanceMan on October 29, 2008 at 9:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

One word - wishbone.

Run it often, run Sumler as the FB with Scott and Speedy back there. Drag the TEs to pass out of it once in awhile. Hell, if you can't pass, might as well get in the best running formation that's ever been invented. Like K-State, A&M won't be ready for it and won't have a defense established to properly stop it if we block correctly.

Posted by OutToPasture on October 29, 2008 at 9:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

K State and Mizzou were both ranked in the 100s in total defense, weren't they? And we managed a whopping 14 points total!

I'm sick of these coaches saying "that's OK", "just relax and have fun"!! Do you really think that's going to inspire a young a team to work harder and get better?!

Lots of good posts here today. This quote by H in the story sticks out, "...We've got to kind of tend toward those things that we're better at.."

With a young and inexperienced team depleted by injuries, I think they're finally coming around to this, even if it seems a bit obvious. If we ran well out of the I against WVU, then run out of the I until a team shows they can stop it. If we had a lot of success mixing coverages and blitzes and keeping a premier (and mobile) QB rattled and contained a la Freeman/KSU, then keep trying it.

Perhaps there's been TOO MUCH put into scheming by this staff and over analyzing every personnel match up. Given our current levels of experience and talent, maybe we just need to keep trying to do what we've had some success doing. Try the I! Keep trying to keep opposing QBs off balance.

And, for God's sake throw in some tricky stuff like that pass McKnight threw to DScott against WVU. Try an onside kick out of nowhere, hook and ladder -- something to ignite your team, especially if you're down big on another team's field and have nothing to lose....

I'm still on the Hawk bus. And, as a couple people have pointed out already the lack of improved play this season is disappointing and disconcerting, but the future does look bright.

Posted by BlackAndGold on October 29, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

mgmtgrad - soooo tired of your, "hey we are 4-4 posts". the team looked like a bottom tier WAC/MWC team getting their butts creamed. seriously, think of something intelligent to say. i mean, you watched those games didn't you? we don't just judge a team by the W-L record. effort, coaching, game plan, improvement...all those things are taken under consideration.

and for all you wussies that can't handle the pressure or the criticism being expressed on this message board, everyone but the husker fans on this site wishes for nothing more than the team to prove us all run. you think we like it that our team sucks?

and please start asking some tough questions to the Buffs staff. i'm starting to think the CD is on CU's payroll. maybe we need the Rocky Mountain News to start reporting on the buffs and posting a guest column on this site.

Posted by copcobuff on October 29, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

4-4 is ok and probably as good as it gets. The problem is we have looked bad in most of the wins and losses and seem to be getting worse, if that's even possible.

We barely beat "a good EWU team" (the guy that said they aren't in the press conference aught to have medal pinned on his chest for having the nuts to say it). If it wasn't for a late interception we lose again to a very average D-1AA team again. Their record proves it Dan. YIKES!

We barely squeak by an over-rated WVU team. Thank goodness their coaches have no clue on how to run a two minute drill. I mean seriously, running the ball up the middle, leaving time out on the board when you have a chance to win. Thanks for bailing us out Bill. WOW!

Then comes an eeked out win over lowly KSU, who's defense is as pourous as lava rock. We scored a whopping 14 pts against a defense that was giving up 30 a game to average teams. We had a 100 yards passing the ball on a team that has given up huge yards in passing. If it wasn't for the Hansen surprise and the defense, we lose for sure.

Last weekend was about as humiliating as it gets. The surprise element is gone as would be expected. We averaged less than 3 yards per play. We fumble and bumble around like we have no clue what a football is even shaped like. Hansen runs around expecting to make a play with his feet and never gets rid of the ball, 30 yards on 16 attempts. Cody for some unexplained answer is inserted at the most unfathomable times, he fumbles and bumbles. No offensive creativity whatsoever. The team is divided. The scoring streak is over and that was easy enough to see coming from this inept offense.

All the while, the press never asks a tough question or if they do Hawk gives some strange wierdo answer or gets super-defensive and goes off on the guy. Asking how many times he's done this rodeo or some bs. This flat, no highs no lows stuff is really starting to bother me as well.

And furthermore, DH keeps kids on the bench or limits their playing time that could actually help us out. See DS, JS, RG, MB, AP, AW. Our special ed teams look like a Poop Warner team, completely getting schooled all the time.

I just don't see a win over A&M and if we don't we might not win another game. This sucks.

This is the most worthless article I've ever read.

Posted by Saheeb on October 29, 2008 at 10:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

copcobuff: you're right in that three of our wins were definitely squeakers and we actually could be 1-7 right now. We have not put together a complete game since CSU. We could also be 5-3 right now. I still think we're heading the right direction overall and that injuries and inexperience are huge this year.

But, I agree that we need some creativity and need to see some progress and, much as I like his stance of not getting too high or too low and Hawk and Cody always pointing fingers at themselves I am tiring of hearing "it's all my fault" and "I didn't have them prepared."

I am also wondering if it's hard for guys to get into the flow, etc. if they' constantly being rotated in and out to exploit personnel matchups. You need that to some degree, but I think there are backs and WRs who get better and stronger the more they're in and develop a rhythm. I think Speedy and DS and Josh Smith are those types. Take them out for a breather but let 'em play!

Posted by copcobuff on October 29, 2008 at 10:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I completely disagree, if we don't beat A&M this week which I doubt that we will, there's no turning this team around and we will lose to cobs as bad as it makes me feel. Right now we suck.

If Cody Hawkins lays another egg Saturday, the kid needs to man up and take himself out of contention for playing time.

At some point (assuming he keeps regressing) Cody needs to accept that he is not earning any PT and it's in the best interest of his team (long term) for him to sit.

OK..THE RULES:

1. Husker fans can only post when they are talking about football (no name calling and such). This rule is to mainly show that we are courteous to our rivals, and so that us Buff fans can get a laugh off these boards.

2. Buff fans cannot refute what Husker fans say, but in return are allowed to make fun of the state, city, team etc. of the cream. This rule, once again is in place so we get a good laugh.

3. Posts against the wussies at the DC are always welcome.

4. Posts pertaining to the article should be insightful and entertaining, no whining, crying or 'woe is me' crap or you'll sound like our offense.

5. Limit posts from a single individual to 5 per article. That way it will give all of those that are on these boards all day long time to go out and find a job and family.

Now play nice...

The Buffs got through the brutal portion of the schedule. Although no one thought OSU would be ranked so high, these next four games are ripe for the picking.

Kyle field is a rough place to play, but Hansen saw worse at Faurolt. Crowd won't be a factor, the Buffs roll 35-3

A&M has found a QB now, apparently. I don't see this game as a "for sure" in the books and we could lose given our inability to move the ball. This QB they have has been on fire lately and can run too. I don't think he's been picked off in several games. So, he's due to be picked off and our D and O are due to have a great game. I think this is the game we see RUN DARRELL RUN, Speedy tears it up and Hansen shows he can really throw. I say Buffs 28-24.

How about rule #7: "No posting during a game and whining about every play you don't like".

Watch the frigin game and don't sit at the computer! It's not your personal blog! It is also annoying to skim through all of the hysteria.

A&M's new QB is the perfect size for a QB. He is 6 foot 5 and weighs 229 pounds; almost exactly the same size as Matt Ballenger, (and Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman, Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Ben Rothlisberger, and on and on ...)

fish...man, you don't like the job Hawk's doing...you don't like the job the Daily Camera's doing...where does end? I bet you don't like the job your maid, landscapers, mechanic, boss, wife (if there is one), kid(s)(if there are any), grocer, mayor, CU President, CU AD, favorire pizza parlor, favorite eatery, police, city counsel, city planners, city maintenance, road contractors, bank, brokerage, insurance agent, service station, or favorite bakery are doing...did I miss anything?

We all know daddy drools all over himself at the thought of a strapping 6'5"/230 Lb QB, that's why, according to him, it's the "perfect size"...I reviewed the current Top 20 Passing Efficiency QB's in D1, here's what I found: 1.Johnson, 6'3"/217 (Tulsa)2.McCoy, 6'3"/210 (Texas)3.Bradford 6'4"/218 (Oklahoma)4.Robinson, 6'3"/210 (Okla State)5.Daniel, 6'0"/225 (Mizzu)6.Harrell, 6'3"/205 (Texas Tech)7.Moore, 6'0/181 (Boise State)8.Hall, 6'1"/201 (BYU)9.Sanchez, 6'3"/225 (USC)10.Davis, 6'2"/217 (Ball State)11.Tebow, 6'3"/240 (Florida)12.Kennum, 6'1"/210 (Houston)13.Clement, 6'1"/208 (Rice)14. Ganz, 6'1"/210 (Nebraska)15.Hiller, 6'5"/228 (W. Michigan)16.Williams, 6'3"/233 (Illinois)17.Reesing, 5'11"/200 (Kansas)18.Grothe, 6'0"/205 (So. Florida)19.White, 6'1"/192 (WVU)20.Johnson, 6'5"/229 (Texas A&M). So, there are a grand total of TWO "perfect" size QB's out of 20...OBVIOUSLY, the guys having the majority of the success at the QB position are 6'3" and under and who knows how many of those heights aren't fudged a bit? Sorry, daddy, just the way it is...

In the college game there just aren't that many 6-5 qb's out there. anyone with that height gets pushed towards the hardwood

The biggest part of QB play is being able to deliver the ball to your other athletes; the most important factor in that delivery process is arm strength; the next factor is field vision which is a product of height.

If your QB can scramble that's a bonus, but not really the most important way a QB can help their team.

Passing efficiancy also isn't a good way to judge how good a QB is; afterall we know even Cody can complete laterals but can't complete a long strike downfield (which would in turn open up the running game).

My point is that size and arm strength make a difference in QB play - we have QB's with those attributes, but as Flyer says, they never get a shot. Why?

There is only one plausible explanation whopa.
Hawk bypassed Ballenger and went with a 6' 2" midget just to torture you.

This personal thing between you two must really go deep.

Exactly what is wrong with Hansen that has some fools calling for another QB instead? Does Hansen have a poor arm? Is he short? Is he secretly Hawk's kid that he changed the name of and snuck past the rest of us?

Hansen has shown very good mobility and has been a pretty good passer too... What's wrong with him that you want to put in Ballenger instead? Because other than being taller, what has Ballenger showed us that Hansen hasn't? I'm not saying Ballenger won't out compete Hansen down the line, but so far he hasn't...

The people here calling for Ballenger are the same ones who were calling for Hansen after Ballenger was put in for a few snaps and looked crappy against Texas. They are living proof that the statement "the most popular player on the team with the fans is the backup QB".

And if Ballenger goes in and looks bad again, what then? What do you say at that point?! I can hear you now: "Put Hansen back in!".

I think it is funny that some of you think that Hawk would go with Hansen over Ballenger (and burn a redshirt in the process) if Ballenger was the guy most likely to get it done (we can suspect that nepotism might be blinding the Coach in the case of little Hawk...but what would be the possible reason for Hawk not to choose Ballenger over Hansen? There IS NO reason).

Some of you (and you know who you are) are just looking for the latest way to stir up controversy. There are legitimate things that this team needs and that people can talk about here. The "Change the QB!" mantra gets old when all three QB's have had a chance to take some snaps. Again, if Ballenger gets another chance to play in a game and looks sub-par...what are you going to scream about then?(Nepa?)

And stop talking to the Bugeaters on the Board. Have we no standards?

Nothing wrong with Ballenger, except he just isnt good enough

Nothing wrong with Hansen, except that so far, it looks like they are trying to reinvent Scott Frost

Nothing wrong with Cody except......well, lets not go there

The common thread ? Helfrich cant figure out how to use any of them

It may very well be that Ballenger is not as good as we witnessed during the UT game. It may also be that Ballenger is not teh big rah, rah type and needs to be more of a vocal cheerleader and more zen like for Hawkins.
There also exists the possibility that By having Hansen in the game... Cody is still needed?????

fish...it's great to read your life isn't as miserable as it's portrayed here via your constant complaining about your favorite college football program, good for you...now I can put those unrealistic expectations of yours in the proper perspective...thanks

nepa - you forgot "run for your life on three, blue and hut-hut." Those plays take a while to learn too. I think only Cody can execute all four.

*sarcasm off*

I'm really tired of the nepotism discussion because it is an empty argument
