Kansas not just a hoops school under Mangino

Jayhawks coach, CU's Hawkins had identical records in first 2 seasons

Mike Bohn is obviously keeping the faith in Dan Hawkins.

Despite an 11-19 overall record five games into his third season as Colorado's head coach, the athletic director this week gave Hawkins a raise and a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2012 season.

"We really believe the wins will come," Bohn said during the press conference. "The wins will come in abundance as this program continues to grow."

Bohn pointed out that the three Big 12 teams currently ranked in the top five -- Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas -- have all had stable coaching staffs for the better part of a decade.

Perhaps a better example to use at this current stage of development for the Buffs would have been the job Mark Mangino has done in building his program at Kansas, something Bohn can obviously appreciate as a former KU football player.

Like his counterpart this Saturday when CU visits Lawrence, Mangino was 2-10 his first season (2002) on the job and 6-7 with a bowl game appearance his second season (2003) at KU.

The fans started getting restless when the Jayhawks went 4-7, 7-5 and 6-6 over the next three seasons, leaving Mangino with an unimpressive 25-35 record entering the 2007 campaign.

And then the wins started coming in abundance.

"We've had some tough days here at Kansas," Mangino told the Kansas City Star during the Jayhawks' run to the Orange Bowl last season. "I've made some mistakes, no question about it."

In 2007, KU set a school record with 12 wins. So far this year the fighting Manginos are 4-1 and ranked 15th in the Associated Press poll.

Allen Fieldhouse isn't the only place to be anymore.

KU will be seeking its 13th consecutive win at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The program currently has the fourth-longest active home winning streak behind Oklahoma (20), Boise State (16) and BYU (15).

"Awesome," is how Hawkins described Mangino's work. "He's done a great job coming into a place that was by in large thought of as a basketball school. Being able to kind of weather the storm and hang in there and keep doing his deal and believing in it."

The Jayhawks had three All-Americans and 14 All-Big 12 players last year. Again, we're talking football here.

Mangino's program is also enjoying a new football practice facility the Kansas City Chiefs would love to have.

"I think they've kicked in about $40 million worth of facilities and upgrades to help that program and help those guys get moving. I think that's helped a bunch," Hawkins said. "He's done a great job and their administration and fans have helped them out as well. ...

"They're one of the elite teams in the country. Five years ago they were just getting ready for basketball season."

There is one difference between the football philosophy at KU and CU that should be noted -- non-conference scheduling.

Last year the Jayhawks' first four wins came against Central Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana, Toledo and Florida International. All of these games were played in Lawrence.

Meanwhile, the Buffs played Colorado State at Invesco Field, Arizona State in Tempe, and Florida State and Miami (Ohio) in Boulder. A well-earned 2-2 start.

This year KU racked up home wins against Florida International, Louisiana Tech and Sam Houston State with a loss at South Florida. CU beat CSU, Eastern Washington and West Virginia before losing to Florida State.

No one at the Dal Ward Center is expecting the Buffs to finish with only four wins as Mangino did during his third season at KU, but the reality of the situation is there probably aren't any easy victories remaining on the schedule.

"You just have to look at your situation and kind of go, 'Are we getting better?'" Hawkins said. "At some point you have to look at the big picture. ...

"Anytime a coach gets retained and gets to prove himself and gets backed by everybody else, every coach in America is standing up going, 'Good for them.'"

Good for Hawk! Good for a classy guy - BTW Hawk, I liked your 'sly' reference to the $40 million in upgrades that KU got (HINT HINT Buff Boosters - Donate some MONEY facilities matter a BUNCH to recruits.) Yeah we haven't won the national Championship yet - nor the Big 12, but I'll take a guy like Hawk who is a winner, is willing to stick out the injuries, brutal schedule, risky gambles, etc... I'd rather have that guy - a man with integrity who wants the best for his players and contracts for his coaches so that he can retain a cohesive staff. That's also why I respect the HELL out of Mike Gundy - a guy that doesn't pull any punches. I'd love to see CU and OSU play for the BIG 12 championship in '09, '10, '11, '12... Reward integrity and hard work with the opportunity to win. vk, tall, nepa, PLEASE go play in a VERY BUSY intersection of I-25 and Colorado Blvd at 4:30 pm on any given Friday... Either that or identify yourself(ves) at JUST ONE game so that we can have a conversation with you face to slimy face!!!

Go buffs. rough em up.

These next two weeks are huge for Hawkins and the future of the program. Lose to KU and KSU, and the Buffs are 3-5, on a five game losing streak, and heading to Columbia for a beat down. The program will be construed as being spiriling out of control, momentum will be a distant memory, and "Hawkins" and "hot seat" will become synonymous.

Win both, and a loss to Missouri (no blowouts, please), and the Buffs are still on schedule for a winning season in '08 and a fast start in '09 (CSU, @ Miami (Ohio), Wyoming - an opening slate even our Big 12 brethren would accept).

Personally, I believe the Buffs will be okay for the rest of the season with a split the next two weekends. A win over a ranked Kansas team in Lawrence puts the Buffs ahead of schedule, and puts the program back in the national conversation.

Go Buffs!

You don't get off that easy nepa. But it isn't surprising you'd sell out after one blowout loss. That's what makes neb fans so funny to observe.

For anyone else, wanting to join - we'll be at the tailgate about an hour and a half before kickoff - look for a black and gold Dodge Hemi - I'll get ya some beers on us... Where will you be vk? if the nebs had to play ttech towards the end of the season then maybe, tech always fades as season goes and to be honest im tired of the "the big 12 south is the stronger division" stuff so it would be nice for neb to win and the north teams to do well when playing south teams, except mizzou, i heard what chase daniel and mizzou players said about nebraska--"bush" league stuff from a program not used to winning and knowing how to 'act'....mizzou will get theres--i only wish we were the team to give "it" to them.....i was at the mizzou v cu game in boulder last year, yikes!!

Posted by smokey on October 10, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It's funny too how you say "with a few turnovers, bla, blah" like neb is just a few turnovers away from being good.

I bet, according to you, the fuskers are just "retooling" right now, while the buffs are in A VICIOUS DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF EPIC PROPORTIONS.

That's where you lose your credibility. Both programs are rebuilding. Get over it. Situations like mangino, pinkle, & mccartney are far more common than buying an instant national title. It's your lack of vison that drives your negative approach. Never able to see more than a game ahead. Leave that outlook to the players.

Is Kansas actually a legitimate team? Tell me what games they won last year that should impress me? What games this year have they won that should impress me? They went to a BCS bowl last year with no quality wins.

KU's wins the last two seasons:
Central Michigan
Southeastern Louisiana
Toledo
Florida International
Kansas St.
Baylor
Colorado
Texas A&M
Nebraska
Oklahoma State
Iowa State
Virgnia Tech - quality win, but wins in bowl games obviously don't mean much - West Virginia v. OU
Florida International
Louisiana Tech
Sam Houston State
Iowa State

One quality win in two seasons.

Their losses:
South Florida
Missouri

KU will be exposed this year - it almost happened last week against Iowa St. - it might happen this weekend if CU can score more than 20 points.

You heard it from Bouldabuff first. This should be an easy win for CU. KU sucks.

I have a new take on the CSU situation. KEEP them on the schedule, first game. Whip them. After that their fans seems to vanish off the face of the earth. THEN schedule the corn slugs the second game. After whipping them, what could nepa possibly say?

"Missouri is a toss up". haha. dude, you know Lawrence Phillips is in jail and Tommy Frazier was probably his PO, right? my prediction, 2 DUIs for little boPeep before he gets axed by a 90 year old Osborne.

Geez. Two dozen posts and no sign of Whositz telling us how bad Cody is and why he's the undeserving starting QB. Somebody ought to go by his house. Maybe he died of SIDS during the night.

Really looking forward to tomorrow. A lot of really good games. I think OK beats TX. Trying not to wear rose glasses, I think CU beats KU. I think MU beats OKState but I'm real curious to see how MU's defense holds up. TT destroys NU, but NU may be able to score some points. Big day in the Big 12 and a lot of fun.

Should be a very interesting game,

I believe Hawkins has tried to copy the KU no huddle spread to accomodate his short QB because KU has had success with their short QB.

So far it hasn't been clicking, maybe tomorrow will be the day.

Posted by bouldabuff on October 10, 2008 at 9:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't recall posting anything saying KU sucks. Read the post smart guy - KU is not a BCS bowl team - they are not the 15th best team in the country - they are a good team but they are a tier below OU, Texas, Missouri, and even Texas Tech. They will be exposed this year as a middle of the road 6 or 7 win Big 12 team.

Point of the story - this is a very winnable ballgame tomorrow.

Whos, stop freaking out dude. buff4life has asked dozens of legit questions. His point: nepa has a one-dimensional mental fixation. I really wish I had the patience and let him recoup and forget 62-36 on his own.

Your argument about people's rights to free speach is hypocritical if you want to let a forrest gump like nepa lash out, but others can't reply. By your rationale, any post saying anything is allowed. We choose to use ours to put nepa in his place. Are you trying to take away someone's constitutional right to post what they want??

Posted by BuffulanceMan on October 10, 2008 at 9:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Before the season started, I wanted to win 8 games. Truth be told, I'll be "happy" with 7 wins - at least that shows improvement to recruits, which is what they want to see. However, with our injuries, I think 8 wins will be a monumental task, although I think it still can be done.

One would think that the O-line has got to start improving, right? The guys who were thrown into the mix at FSU now have 2 games under their belt. As good a time as any to get it going this weekend. I look for us to establish the run and try to use our TEs more.

If we can actually get AVERAGE special teams play, then I expect us to keep this close. If we're w/in a TD in the 4th, I like our chances. Say what you will about Cody, but when the game's on the line in the 4th is when he's at his best. And that can't be taught.

Go Buffs! Get a win in Lawrence!

I can't get my mind around the fact that we are 14 pt underdogs to KANSAS. And not in bball. That sucks and I think should be motiviation enough for our players to re-establish CU as the team to reckon with from the North. Let's go Buffs & show those pu$$y gayhawks how you play smashmouth football!!!

Scary stats:
Four straight games over 300 yards passing for Reesing, who is 3rd in the nation in total offense;
KU is 4th in the nation in 3rd down conversions;
On eight turnovers lost to the opposition, the Jayhawks have given up only six points on the opponent's subsequent drive.

That said, I do believe the Jayhawks are ripe for the picking. Survive the first five minutes (note to Hawk: if you win the coin flip, defer this time. Make KU drive the length of the field), and the Buffs, with a few timely turnovers, can handle this team.

We're due for another complete game.

Hawk would be 19-11 instead of the reverse if we played KU's schedule every year. It's an embarassment. But, with a doormat of a program you've got to credit them, and Mangino, for building enough of an appearance of an upward program to start to draw good talent and then doing something with that talent. Kudos, I say. But, now that they're a big boy they need to improve their schedules and play tougher teams.

Anyone see the Clemson-Wake Forest game last night? Boy did Clemson look like crap -- a #9 preseason ranked team! They reminded me of us two years ago. They're awful.

nepabuff you freakin' luddite. When did I say KU is a pretender? Never. Read the post, moron, then attempt to say something intelligent occasionally instead of the usual reactionery bile that spews from your keyboard as you bang on it simian fashion. I said they built their program into a winner by playing patsies but should be credited with using it as a way to post winning records. Now they are a "big boy" team with good talent so they need to take on good teams out of conference and stop with the full plate of cupcakes every season. Understand? I like Kansas and most of the other Big 12 teams.

KU beat CU because we've sucked and have been inexperienced the last couple of seasons. They've had better talent. That's why they've beaten us. They might also beat us tomorrow, but we're catching up. Even when we were really good and KU sucked, for some reason, they have always given us trouble.

Turning point for tomorrow..

Hawkins instructs the OC to "go for it" on 4th and 25 on their own 22 yard line.

Explaining that "they'll never expect it".

Helflich sends the play in muttering "never expect it? this is the 5th time today"...

Hawkins snickers "hee hee, I'm the riverboat gambler from Boise" seconds before young Hawkins is sacked again for a loss at the 5.

Good point buff4life. We could have taken them down last year even with subpar talent. We pretty much kept them in check despite Reesing running effectively. And, that Hugh Charles fumble was a killer, no doubt. We'll see what happens tomorrow, but we're definitely going to be on par or better shortly. Cheers.

nepa for your insanity reminder

The selection of Steve Pederson in 2003 as athletic director was widely thought to be the only clear choice because of his experience, his roots and his knowledge of our traditions," Perlman said. "I know Steve made the decisions he thought best for the interests of the program and the university. I am disappointed that I had to come to this decision."

Took 5 years of being whamped and whumped with no improvement. Started with the buff thumping as you backed into the rose and got thorned.

over and over again and again. Your definition.

I have a poster signed by GB and all it says is

62 to 36. Actually I have two of them. Would you want me to send you one? Also have one signed by the hawk.

Go buffs. Pound em.

C'mon, nepa, this is the same stuff you said last week - AND the week before the West Virginia game (oops - how did that work out for you?).

Anything - and I mean ANYTHING new? Do you think that it's news that the Buffs have struggled offensively? Do you think that we didn't know that Hawkins is 0-2 against Kansas (but 2-0 against, that's right, Texas Tech. Want to borrow Hawkins this weekend?).

At least try and present a new angle or argument.

Go Buffs!

Win both, and a loss to Missouri (no blowouts, please), and the Buffs are still on schedule for a winning season in '08 and a fast start in '09

That's really groundbreaking information Montana.

Duh...

CU's schedule:

CU 38 CSU 17. CSU has gone 3-1 since, only losing to Cal.
CU 31 EWU 24. CU's "hic-up" game. We played down to EWU, no doubt about it.
CU 17 #18 WV 14. WV has since won 2 straight.
CU 21 FSU 39. FSU's only loss is to then #18, now #21 1-loss WF.
CU 14 #5 UT 38. UT is undefeated & currently #5.

From the looks of this, I think we're a halfway decent team. I'd say a middle-of-the-pack Big XII team who should finish with 6-8 wins. Or better. Who knows how good FSU, WF, and UT are, or even WV.

KU's schedule:

KU 40 FIU 10. FIU is 2-3 on the season.
KU 29 LTU 0. LTU is 2-2 on the season.
KU 34 #19 USF 37. USF is 5-1 on the season
KU 38 SHU 14. SHU is 2-1 on the season.
KU 35 ISU 33. ISU is 2-3 on the season.

I just don't see a large difference between a 3-2 CU team that played WV, FSU and UT and a 4-1 KU team that's played USF... and USF.

Therefore, I'm upping my prediction. This game is very winnable.

CU 27 KU 16.

montanabuff - thanks for the states.

i hope the d keeps reesing on his toes. KU has played weak competition.

the buffs have a real chance if helfrich, hawk, , the game planning, cody, and the young O line step it up.

if ISU rocked them for 33, the buffs should be good for at least 38. this is KU - perennial doormat. gayle sayers is not running the ball.

kansas is a good team. they are well coached, have some good players, and, yes, some "difference makers". they are not at the same level, on a consistant basis, as the sooners, 'horns, tigers, or raiders. they probably do not have as many good players as okie state, but are close, and are probably more mature, certainly "smarter". they can be beaten, colorado is not that far off, and could pull off a mild upset. i tell you though, kansas will not overlook this game, they'll be ready.

No EP, I'm from the University of Colorado: we've got a new way of keeping it "all in family."

Posted by donintucson on October 10, 2008 at 6:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If they tackle,
If they stop the QB draw,
If they block people,
If they cover on kicks,
If they run the ball effectively from the I (150+ yards),
If they run the ball effectively in the red zone,
If they DON'T turn the ball over, NOT ONCE,
and if they throw to the TEs when they throw the ball,
The Buffs will win, 28-21; If they screw up on any one of the above, they lose.

Go Buffs!!!

VK - CU has a great chance to pull an upset. If I were Hawkins I would run the ball until KU proves they can stop Stewart and (I hope) Scott. As for how Cody will do, I think he will complete a bunch of short passes to the flat and get a couple of short yardage TD's. Just like always!

Ya think it's time for DS to prove to people he was the number one running back recruit in the nation? Granted, he's been a little dinged but when is his breakout game? Tomorrow?

I think the Buffs can control Reesing's ground game. The pass defense has been fair. I've got CU winning this one by a slim margin. Jayhawks are over-rated. My remote will get abused flipping between the CU/KU and UT/OU games in the morning. Gotta love college football. Tuning in Lee Corso early to see his pick. Saw Kirk this evening saying a number 1 or 2 Mizzou shows up in Austin next week. He's dissing OSU without really saying it.

Ballenger needs some playing time. And can someone teach Jfly to simply take a knee? That was a safety for UT last week. And kudos to a previous post about Colt McCoy...if he isn't on steroids he must still be breast feeding. He's a beast if you compare him to the last two years.

CU 21 KU 17

Go Buffs.

Friends-

I have seen the best of the Buffs this year. Let me give props to Buff4life and Stuart (great site but can we get some girls? I have some great pictures for you but not sure how to send them when they are in frames on my wall).
Thought the contract extension was a little premature but we can all identify. He who is now named is still hurt and needs to heal. Give the kid time. As for the bird...it's been revealed that dude wants to be Applewhite. Cody-give us one more big win. I still think that Ballenger could have been given one series before the half V Texas that would have been a better barometer than the garbage time he was given. Now that Big Bird has a long rope we wont see Ballenger until this season is long gone. I wont see the game Saturday as my boy plays his game at the same time. I root for the Buffs tomorrow but don't think they can prevail. Our offense gives our team no chance unless we let our line run block and we have a fine kicking game-two of the weakest aspects of our game. Cody cannot win a game from behind in the 2nd half and we have seen that repeatedly. I dont think any of our QB's can either. However, we win this game and we have a shot to still win the North with a shocker over Missouri on the 25th. Any takers?

nolan-at least someone reads my posts. Give me a scenario where we can win provided we win the next two. Who wants to meet up in College Station after we beat Mizzou?

Posted by houston_buff on October 10, 2008 at 9:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Don-You forgot one thing. Buffs will probably get two take away turn overs-the stats say so. Can they turn those two takeaways into at least 7 points? If they do then we may sneak a win. I will call a Texas win here and an LSU loss. Texas is #1 on Monday. Bet what is left of your portfolio on it and report back on this board. Two hookup pays like -860.
