Buffs' offensive line gets Goree

Defensive tackle could play on offense as early as Saturday

Just a few days ago the idea of Eugene Goree playing offense for the Colorado football team in this week's game at Kansas was far-fetched, to say the least.

What a difference a few days can make.

Unsatisfied with the current group of guards on the offensive line, coaches decided this week to move the redshirt freshman defensive tackle to the other side of the ball to see what he could do. Coaches have liked what they have seen.

"He is picking it up probably about as well as a guy could," Hawkins said. "He's very gifted in there now. He's got a punch. He's athletic in there and he's a big dude. He's 300 pounds plus. If he continues to figure things out, he'll be a nice player in there.

"Now can he get it all figured out by Saturday? Who knows?"

Goree, a 6-foot-1 product of Murfreesboro, Tenn., has never played offense in a game, but coaches are considering using him as early as this Saturday on the road against the No. 16 team in the nation because he is stronger and more athletic than any of their other options.

Goree said his only offensive experience since before high school was practicing as the backup center for a time on his high school team.

"I'm really interested in it," Goree said. "It's something new -- a new challenge, and I like challenges."

The Colorado offensive line hasbeen decimated this season by injuries and academic problems. Three linemen have suffered season-ending injuries, including guards Mike Iltis and Max Tuioti-Mariner, and two others were ruled academically ineligible before training camp.

Still, coaches do have options. They recruited eight offensive linemen in 2007 and added three more who are true freshman now. Some of those players are among the affected with injuries and academics, but it would seem like someone would be ready to take advantage of the opportunity.

Hawkins was asked after Wednesday's practice why it was necessary to move Goree when players such as redshirt freshmen Shawn Daniels and Ethan Adkins, and walk-ons David Clark and Keenan Stevens are available if something should happen to current starters Devin Head and Blake Behrens.

Nearly all of those players were added to the program during Hawkins' tenure.

"We're just trying to get some help in there," Hawkins said. "We are. We're trying to play the best people in there and trying to get some fortification going on."

CU is trying to get some consistency going from its offense, which hasn't produced a 400-yard game in offense yet this season. The Buffs are struggling to run the ball behind the beleaguered line and rank 92nd nationally on the ground.

Colorado will lose two senior defensive tackles at the end of the season and Goree appeared headed toward trying to fill the shoes of George Hypolite and Brandon Nicolas.

Hawkins said that still could happen even if Goree really takes well to the guard position. He could easily move back to defense when more healthy offensive linemen are available.

"Right now we just have such a dire need over there. And I'm not saying he's going to make it permanent. He might come out and be a great guard and flip him over and be a noseguard."

Too bad the 300 lb fullback was driven off. He won some awards for his play, but eveidently was not good enough because of all the incoming line dudes.

Mr. Grimes you need to be really paying attention please.

Maiava wouldn't have been moved to fullback if he were the best candidate for the guard job .... old news. That was three injuries ago.

My concern would be that the reports have been that all of the linemen work at all of the positions. Unfortunate conclusion - none of the backup freshmen tackles are good enough yet to slide over to guard.

Stuff happens, gang (Betting nepa will forget that Nebraska was so thin at linebacker that they had to move over a running back to fill the void.)

Chins up, Buffzoners! The KU preview is up at CUatthegame!

There has been some spirited discussion this week at Buffzone. Nothing like a quarterback controversy, a new contract for the head coach, and a two game losing streak to get the keyboards smokin’.

Is this the week that the Buffs return to the win column? In reviewing this week’s “T.I.P.S.”, we’ll take a look at:

T - Talent. Did Matt Ballenger’s touchdown drive against Texas create a quarterback controversy?
I - Intangibles. The Buff players felt that they gave away the game against last season. Will the memory of the 19-14 loss help or hinder the Buffs this Saturday?
P - Preparation / Schedule. Colorado has played a tough first half schedule. For KU, there are four top ten teams in the last six games. Are the Buffs the Jayhawks’ last ‘gimme’?
S - Stats. Good stuff. How is it possible that you could very well watch the first five minutes Saturday morning and then leave the television, knowing how the game will turn out?

Check it out - http://www.cuatthegame.com - before you find something better to do!

Go Buffs!

Maiava quit - end of story.
Goree to offense speaks volumes about the inability of Daniels or Adkins to step up

Let's hope this pans out-- Right now it smacks of desperation. Which I guess makes sense, the O-line lost 2 key-players in one week and has been absolutely awful for 2 games, the QB has been getting killed, the run game has stalled, we're about to play another ranked team on the road... So I guess now is as good a time as any for a little desperation.

I just hope we come out and punch Kansas in the mouth... What I've hated more than anything about the last 2 games is the feeling that we are just overmatched-- The offense has been getting pushed off line, we can't complete simple passes, people are missing their blocks etc. I heard Tom Kensler on 104.3 The Fan last night and he was saying that in talking to Helfrich, he gets the feeling coaches are simplifying the gameplan this week to try and cut down on mental mistakes...

I think that's a good idea. Lots of underclassmen playing-- don't make them think too much, just let them go out and knock some people around, have some fun, and see what happens. Go Buffs!

I wonder if Goree is REALY excited about the new challenge - or just saying what he has to say.

I know people don't like to bring up Miava - but he said he was up for trying new things at first too.

The next thing you know - he's not so happy. The next thing you know - he's gone.

Let's hope Goree really is up for it - that he really can help - and that the next time we read about him its not because he's going to UCLA.

Guess maybe we didn't recruit so well for the O-line. Sounds like we have more bodies than in the past - but what difference does it make if they can't cut the mustard?

Posted by vkberlinn on October 9, 2008 at 8:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Old news old smews.

The coach pushed him out "cause he was not good enough or big enough."

Bad decision and poor managment by the buffs.

He quit? Okay so you been a sales guy all yur life and your boss recruits some hot shot sales guys and tells you, yup you won some honors and played well, but we have some new people coming in and well we like ya so you need to go become a marketing guy.

You leave brother.

They recruited him and then all of a sudden with this great hurry up spread offense he becomes a fullback? Right. Kind of like Scott being the punter?

Bad handling of the situation. Old news. History repeats itself.

And another thing that special teams coach needs to go today?

Montana once again is spot on- his insights are excellent !! My thoughts, restore confidence in the kicking game- do not miss any FG opportunities, open up the passing game ( given some level of protection for the QB), bring Ballenger in on some scripted sequences, and let D Scott or Speedy find some rhythm running the ball, and the Buffs will be fine- on defense simply contain their QB, particularly on 3rd and long situations. Buffs 27- KU 17

and it wasnt just the fullback thing...it was the 3rd string fullback thing. I agree it was a big mistake but I also wonder if there is something else to the story not made public.

montanabuff:
Awesome review as always. Only problem I have with it is that you admit Kansas fans "are looking at the game against Colorado as being the easiest game on the remaining schedule." Bah. Comeon man! =) They play AT ****aska... seriously. NU is on ESPN's bottom 10 list (yah, yah, I know it's the coveted #5 spot... but still) right now!! The Buffs at home will be way harder to beat than NU away. NU is easily their easiest game... say you don't agree with said KU fans. Say it ain't so!

Other than that... Excellent post!

Maiava left for whatever reason he left. He felt that CU/Buffs were not his best option for whatever reason. Would he have likely been converted back to lineman pretty quick into the season? Most probably.

Where he was in early spring depth chart for a new position is irrelevant. If he was good he would have moved up. The coaches moved Solder from TE to the line because he had natural gifts that meant that his future on the line was brighter than his future as a TE. They saw the same thing in Maiava as far as his overall build and what they determined to be his best fit. If he ends up being an All-American lineman at UCLA and goes on to a long career as one in the NFL, THEN you can say "oops Hawk and co. messed that one up". Until then he transferred and is sitting out and so far has done nothing but leave a hole for CU to fill.

Brian White also left because he felt he knew better than the coaches. Had he stayed he would have been the likely starter by week 3 at the latest. We also would have likely won more than just 2 games. Considering how he ended up, I'm not too sad that he left either.

Goree is a completely different deal. The coaches aren't moving him because they feel he is ultimately better on the O-line than D-line, they have a need for him there and are trying to relieve the situation on that side of the ball. The D-line is not hurting right now. For a lineman who wants to get to the NFL, having experience and game film from both sides of the ball opens up his options more than it ever would for a lineman who was converted to a fullback. The NFL would say "he was too small to be a lineman in college so there is no way he can be one in the NFL. He is a fullback".

as long as we are talking about position moves do not forget Dizon and Hypolite.

Posted by Saheeb on October 9, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

BuffTime: How did Brian White end up? I feel the same way you do about his departure, dumb move on his part. He could have taken over mid-season and led us to some wins. Never understood why they didn't give him a try based on how he played at the end of the Clemson bowl loss. So, what happened to White?

Posted by BuffTime on October 9, 2008 at 10:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What was Hypolite originally? I know Dizon came in as a RB. There are several people on the team (and pretty much every team in the country) who are playing/practicing at different positions than they had in HS. But playing QB in HS and switching to WR, RB, or TE etc. is not the same as coming to the college level and playing a year at one position and then converting. Solder was not a bad TE, he just has a better future on the line. B-Jax was a QB in HS and really really wanted to be a QB in college. Problem was that he just wasn't that good as a QB. Had he been fully converted to RB or WR and he would have put everything into that then he might have been an All-American.

My point is, every coach/team has players that have switched positions. In the case of Goree I think it only opens options for him in the future and is not as big a switch as some people seem to think. The basic characteristics of a good lineman on either side of the ball is the same. Having the knowledge/skill set to play either is a bonus. I have no doubt that Goree is fine with an at least temporary move to the O-line. If he excels then he is likely to be just as in favor of staying there as to going back to the D.

Bt

He weighed 300 lbs. Won first team all big 12 freshman honors as a guard.

No 300 lb fullbacks in the nfl.

It was a mistake by the coaching staff. They had all these "great linemen" redshirted and coming in.

He if he was a problem the coaches should have fixed it. THe line coach and the offensive coordinator on unimpressive, as is the special teams coach.

They sure could have used him now and you know it.

Time to "Auburn" em. NOW.

Posted by BuffTime on October 9, 2008 at 10:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

First off, I didn't mean for it to come off as if Brian ended up in jail or anything like that.

Brian transferred to Portland State with the intention of winning the starting job there (if I remember correctly he was listed as no.2 behind Cox when he left). Problem is, he didn't win the starting job that year. He did start for 2007 but got injured with 2 games left. No idea if he tried to make a career out of it.

My point on him is that he bolted before the dust even settled on the Q situation and if he had just been a little patient he would have likely locked up the QB job for 2006 and 2007.

Posted by BuffTime on October 9, 2008 at 11:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yes, Maiava was a top freshman lineman. Thing is, there aren't that many freshman starting on the line in college. He was pretty good though yes. But you are correct, there were other lineman both coming in and also having red-shirted. The coaching staff was trying to get the best people on the field. Let me correct that, they were trying to get as many of their top people on the field as possible.

Maiava would have likely been a decent lineman at CU. He might also have been relegated to backup if the other linemen in the pipeline develop as they are projected to. Now you are wasting a good player because he is good but not the best at that position. For a lineman he was undersized. He made up for that by being tenacious. The coaches thought that by slimming him down a bit he would be a monster as a fullback. It was never the intention for him to stay at 300lbs. They wanted him to plow down DEs and help the O-line dominate. He was to be basically an extra lineman who would be allowed to be more mobile and flexible to use than a traditional down lineman can be.

I loved Maiava and was really sad to see him leave. To say he was chased off is not fair. Do you really think that if he had told the coaches that he was transferring because of the switch that they wouldn't have said "OK you can stay a lineman if you stay"? No one wanted him gone. If a kid tells his coaches that he is fine with a position switch then it is on him, not them. It is called maturity. I for one will give him the benefit of the doubt and believe that he left to be closer to his family. He does have a brother playing for USC and who says that he doesn't have other family in the LA area as well?

Your rationalization skills are excellent.

He is just as big as Goree. Whats the difference today?

Poor line coach actually. They need him now. He has new kids, kids he recruited and injuries aside he appears as competent as the the special teams coach. Nada.

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on October 9, 2008 at 11:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Brian White left CU because he was told he would be benched in his senior year to make way for the coach's son to become the starting QB.

Posted by BuffTime on October 9, 2008 at 11:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

vk: Maiava was 6ft and 300lbs. and yes Goree is about the same. But the other linemen on the O-line are much bigger. Most are over 4 inches taller. Hawk and co. are trying to build a big of a line as they can. Maiava wasn't going to grow 4+ inches. He was a little heavy for a fullback but the same height and was very tenacious. You're telling me you wouldn't want to have the line we would have (if everyone had been healthy/eligible) plus a 275+ lbs beast of a fullback too? Maiava's best shot at the line was at center and Daniel Sanders was not likely to lose out to him. They wanted Maiava on the field as much as possible, not in a backup role.

Goree's size is a pretty good sign that he will ultimately go back to the D-line when all is said and done. D-linemen you want to be strong and big too, but speed to move around and get past O-linemen is key too. O-linemen try to control a space not get past a barrier.

BTW, in case you aren't familiar with White: he was 6'5", 225 lbs, 4.7 in the 40 yard dash, could bench press 300 lbs, and had a very strong and accurate arm.

Now you can understand why Coach Dad would not want someone like that around who might make Cody look ... well ... like Cody.

Gent...and ladies,

I really enjoy logging onto the buffzone and reading the articles and the comments from all the fans, but the whole back and forth between the true Buff fans and the naysayers is repetitive and unproductive. We get it. Some of the posters dislike Hawkins, the Buffs, etc, and question practically every move they make. Yawn.

Buff fans, can we each commit to ignore these folks? I already have. Who cares what they think? If they were really as brilliant as they think they are, they would be head coaches somewhere. They aren't. In fact, anyone who spends that much time rehashing negative issues on a comment board probably needs therapy and the rest of us are not really going to be able to help them.

Anyway, Montanabuff, good stuff with the cuatthegame! Have you ever thought of posting individual matchups and expectations? For instance,I would like to hear who we can expect to be covering KU's great receiver and/or what sort of defensive scheme we might be using to slow his production. Just a suggestion.

Two days 'til the game! Fired up to see if the Buffs can go into Lawrence and steal a win...

GO BUFFS!

OK, pop-quiz:

Coaches comment on a player being a "Coaches kid" (meaning they are the son of a coach, usually high school) as being a positive because:

a) They like to perpetuate the concept of nepotism any way that they can.

b) Because kids who have a parent who coaches the sport they play get far more and far deeper/wider a coaching experience than a kid who only gets coaching within the usual confines of a team's practices, so that the coaches kid is a "smarter" player.

whatanepa, we already know your answers so no need to reply.

Does that mean that a coach's kid is always better than a non-coach's kid? No. Does it mean that they are most often a lot easier to coach new concepts to? Yes.

Cody's role in CU Buff football history is that of a stop-gap in the transition from the Barnett era (not meant in a disparaging way just the fact that it is a different system and players needed) and the Hawkins era. I don't think any of us are promoting Cody to by default be a 4 year starter. If Hawkins had tried to take a raw QB without any experience or grasp of the concepts that he wants to use for his offense we would be having a lot more 2-10 seasons and Hawk wouldn't be long for a job. Do you think it is a coincidence that TT has a new senior QB pretty much every year? It is because their system is hard to learn. Do you think it is a coincidence that very few rookie QBs start their first year in the NFL and have success? It is because it is a new system and is a faster game than they came from.

Will Ballenger be the next starter at CU? Too early to tell. Will he be ready this year to take over? Too early to tell. Should he get a shot soon (i.e. this coming game)? Yes I think he should. He showed promise in mop up duty. Let's see if he is ready for prime-time. If he struggles should he stay in for the rest of the season? No. While Cody may not be Brett Favre, he gives the Buffs a decent chance to win every game. Play Ballenger only if he outplays Cody.

vk, I never said it is a plus for the team that Maiava is not on it anymore. Clearly his leaving hurt the team. But he is gone. So instead of having him available they are at least temporarily converting Goree to the other side of the line.

Maiava left. His choice. No one forced him out. I never heard peep one that he said he would leave if he was forced to convert to FB. Everything we've read is that he told the coaches he was fine with the switch and then told them that he wanted to transfer for personal reasons. So, either a) he really did transfer for personal reasons and would have been fine at FB or pushed to go back to the line or b) he kept it to himself that he hated the switch and decided not to try to plead his case or c) none of the above and we don't know the real reason.

I think b or c are the most likely answers. I think it is a shame it didn't work out for him at CU. I at no time ever tried to make it out to be better for CU that he is gone. So what point of yours did I exactly make for you?

te was very thin in the spring and likely also in the fall - devree gone, geer suspended indefinitely. and tau, faatagi, iltis, and head seemed to be a reasonable guard rotation. had kai stayed, he would have been back at guard very soon into fall camp. its difficult to know kai's reasons for transferring so it seems unfair to attribute it all to the switch - if it was predominantly family he may have left regardless of the position switch - kai has cu roots (father, scott mahoney 70-72). cut the coaches a little slack on this one.

Posted by BuffTime on October 9, 2008 at 12:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If the answer is b then Maiava was immature. I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Like I posted waaay up at the top; If Maiava turns into an All-American at UCLA, then you can say CU made a mistake. But even if not, it is a shame we lost him.

Maybe you should apply for an assistant coach position though since you seem to think you are much better at it then the current staff. They make pretty good money I hear.

Classic "daddy"...you claimed playerS (QB's), plural, left CU because of Cody...name them...can't? that's what I thought...White couldn't hold down the starting job at Portland State, you have no answer for that...BTW, how do you know what the guy could bench? you don't really know? that's what I thought...Laughingstock

Dear Camera Staff,

Several folks on this site continually post comments which are bordering on defamation, obscene and abusive. I was wondering if you would consider enforcing your own policy? For example Nepabuff and Whosyourdaddy currently are the worst.

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on October 9, 2008 at 11:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

"Brian White left CU because he was told he would be benched in his senior year to make way for the coach's son to become the starting QB".

I doubt WhosYourDaddy is in a position to know... and if he is, it's time he backs up his claim with something besides hearsay.

If this isn't a true factual statement then it violates policy and the user should be banned.
Face it, Nepabuff and Whosyour daddy are trolls on this site. They are here daily for one reason... to stir up discontent among true fans of CU. Frankly speaking, Camera staff should be held accountable if they fail to correct the situation.

Of course they will probably call this post off topic and ban me! But here we go!

In a post a few days ago, someone was going to go to a CA prep game to check out one of the verbal QB commits. I thought he said he would send his report to Montanabuff for inclusion in cuatthegame. Don't see anything about it. If he's reading the posts, I'd be curious to hear his opinion.

sorry
nepahose is way too obesessed to be a husker fan. He definitely has a personal connection with the firing of Barnett or the Hiring of Hawkins (dismissed by Hawkins?) or is a proxy on someone's behalf who does fall into that catagory.
It is personal and thinly veiled.

Posted by rodrigo on October 9, 2008 at 1:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

mommy and kenny are here to stir things, that's true, homeontherange. But if it's discontent among true fans let them stay because they fail and do so miserably (see contract extension, Dan Hawkins). Besides, its more fun poking holes in their (il)logical reasoning (brian was injured the last two games so his stats for the first 9 don't count? What?) than arguing about Kai Mai.

oldbuffer
one of the scouting sites (probably rivals) has an article on Jordan Wynn, our first QB commit who has been promoting the Buffs with anyone he runs into in SoCal.
If you are reading this Jordan, many thanks and an extremely warm welcome to the buff nation.

That isn't defamation and it certainly isn't obscene. The thing that's obscene is the continual shouting down of anyone who dares to say the emperor has no clothes.

These are public figures we're talking about. If they don't like being the subject of public discussion they have a very simple recourse: Hawk can resign and give up his million dollar salary that we are paying him and his son can step aside and refund the taxpayers the $100,000+ that his scholarship is costing the state.

montanabuff - thanks for the site, and i will click though even more if you can get a few bucks off the deal. i also think you provide some real balance around here.

vk - i am glad you agree with me that cabral is being screwed. he deserves to be the highest paid assistant based on achievement and tenure.

homeontherange - just because someone disagrees with your view, doesn't make it obscene. what is obscene is how many "fans" around here drink kool-aid and slap themselves on the back like drunk frat boys in a pissing contest.

just because a reasonable fan raises questions about coach, his son, his son's questionable ability and performance, an inept to date O, helfrich and his lack of direction, or the direction of the program, doesn't open that poster up to personal attacks.

i have been called any number of disgusting names in violation of the DCs policy, but i still wouldn't rat those fools out. extrapoint and dizonrocks and flaven and yourself can make as many personal attacks as makes you feel good.

that will not solve the buffs woes. committed fans - fans like vk, montanabuff, oldbuff, myself and even whosyourdaddy - will continue to support the program (financially as well), have higher expectations, and question decisions - despite foolish children sputing, petty, mindless drivel.

Speaking of a switch of positions. How about the top WR the Buffs will have to cover this weekend at KU? was he not the starting QB until Reesing showed up and proved to be better?

Posted by thefishheadsoup on October 9, 2008 at 2:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

whosyourdaddy provides some balance around here as well. even the mainstream media are catching on. it might be true that the qb cupboard is empty, but that doesn't mean cody is taller, runs faster, has a stronger arm or doesn't lead the nation in balls batted down at the line of scrimmage.

ballenger looked good - i know it was agains the scrubs, but he looked good. he looked confident, made a great call to run, and threw a dart to williams for the TD. the kids deserves a chance.

helfrich is talking about paring back a playbook that he has said he is limiting because of lack of understanding. again - i think the game planning needs to get better. i expect wins against kansas. it's kansas and gayle sayers isn't around.

hawkins was brought in for any number of reasons. his enthusiasm and community development work is off the charts, his recruiting gets a solid b+, a- (always room for improvement), but his offense looks lame. blame the O line, blame cody, blame the game planning. whatever. it's his offense.

as i have said before, even UM - though rich rodriquez doesn't have his guys - looks like a team that knows what it is trying to accomplish offensively. i have not seen that yet from the buffs.

the d looks solid and held their own against a great texas team. the d held us in the game against FSU, and basically won the game against EWU and WVU. give cabral his do.

Posted by thefishheadsoup on October 9, 2008 at 2:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

the d will also give reesing fits this weekend, and i know they will keep us in the game. hopefully, helfrich, hawk, the young O line, and cody will step up. mainly, i hope helfrich and hawk can design a game plan that maximizes top talent - smith, stewart, scott - and minimizes weakness - cody and the O line. i know that's a tall order, but establishing the run to give the line confidence and keep their D in check, and mixing ballenger in would be a good start.

Mommy and Kenny not here just to stir things people. I believe they are here to stir things and to attempt to damage the program. The Cameras disregard for enforcing there own rules allows them to continue to damage my beloved Buffs. Which ticks me off.

That said if Nepa or Who's want to stick around and have good constructive football discussion without evidence of trying to defame hawkins character, villify, or even be off topic, then by all means stick around. Otherwise, I encourage the camera to enforce their rules to all people on the forum. By getting rid of them and continually monitoring the site for continued similar behavior from new members.

And yes, Who's... your comments could be construed as defamation sometimes. So be sure what you say is true (factual). Otherwise you open yourself up for litigation.
Yes you are responsible for what you say, even on an internet forum.

homeontherange - take a gander back at some posts. the only folks violating DC rules are the ravers. it is not a violation of the DC or the first amendment to criticize. it IS a violation of the DC to use profanity and call obscene names. what is disappointing is that raising concerns about a program i have supported and care about gets turned into some nonsense by children.

Who's,

Nice to hear you speak of your friendship with coach Barnett. Let me be on the record: I think Gary Barnett got treated terribly in the late stages of his tenure here. Mostly by the media, but some fans as well. I was and am a Barnett supporter but at the end it was clear to me that he needed to go in order to move on. I wish him the best and I think he is a great coach and despite of the media bias, I think morally he is a good man. I hope he coaches again soon!
But now that he's gone I don't think that anyone should bash Hawk just because Barnett lost his job. I think you have been wrong by doing just that. People want to criticize Hawk or Cody... go ahead. But you don't need to make it a central theme of your cyberexistence! Have something else to say and don't live to degrade someone else.... ever.

Home,

Go Home.

What do you think the readership of this Blog is?

a million, a trillion? a hundred?

This blog has no effect on anything. Just banter, polite or impolite among goofballs with some kind of inner need to babble mostly about nothing.

Ya,ll should be welcome. Even the extremists.

Therefore, the dang offensive coordinator has a very offensive offense that is predictable, beatable and stupid. So there.

Cody is a nice short guy with bb gun for an arm and turtle legs. Great mind though.

The offense has no identity and therefore is into random act mode. The spread looks like jelly rather than caviar. Hurry up is a "expanded huddle with no leader."

Time to "Auburn" the OC.

But toward the end, even before the crap happened, he started to believe it really was all about him. Too bad and I felt sorry for him. It just happened. His RTD stance was right from the heart. I think he just got lost a bit and there was no one there to help him get through it.

Let me apologize to Who's your Daddy if he is not here for the purpose of damaging the program. I apologize.

Now vk , I don't know what the readership is but I do know that the sportswriters from the Post, News, Scout, and Rivals all read the camera and the forums to get a feel for the mood of the fans, in that respect, a postings on the board do affect the team. Otherwise your right we are a bunch of fools spending too much time talking about a oblong leather ball. I am not for censorship of any one or their opinion, but we should all follow the rules, which are posted if you hit the link.

I don't disagree with your impression of the offensive coordinator.

It's not right to bash Cody because he has no protection and I won't bash coach Hawk just because Gary Barnett lost his job.

Posted by extrapoint on October 9, 2008 at 2:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

everyone is welcome here
home has a point. Barnett was a decent coach. No where near Stoops though (heh heh)
I will never forgive the ratbastards at the Denver Post and their minions who were classic witch hunt and yellow journalism.
Even though you have to forgive Barnett somewhat under those conditions, he basically did lose his motivation at the end. I think his curiosity about the Missouri job was the last nail in his coffin. Cant blame him about that, however.
He probably will be back and will probably be successful....most likely at a non-bcs school.

Even though I'm sure he doesnt care, a lot of discussion of mine that might set him in a negative light was meant mostly as ammo against negative nepa, whos and his precvious ID'a, all of which gave plenty of reason to suspect the connection to Barnett.

If they are not indeed, connected with Barnett, they have probably embarrased him anyway.

I still maintained his and Watson's offensvie game plan did become plenty offensive at the end and Helfrich has a ways to go before he falls to that level.

montana - i appreciate your time and perspective.

i get bummed around here because folks want to alternately call the CU a powerhouse (maybe briefly 90-95) and then let them off the hook for decades of mediocrity.

i want a powerhouse, and maybe i am deluding myself, but i believe this U offers an amazing place to come play college ball, and we have most of the infrastructure for a great college program.

extra - part of the reason that barnett got railroaded out was because he and the tharp administration did a horrible job in the community relations department. barnett at the end reminds me a little be of mccain in the debate the other night - all pissy and bitter.

I'm not skeered yet about the O.
The first year was a write off. Jackson couldnt hit a bull in the A** with a base fiddle.
Last year wasnt all that bad considering it was Cody's first year. a lot of people badmouthed Charles, including his own coach a coupla times but he did give the O a little respectability.
Even though he has disappeard this year, McKnight had a few moments.
Off field problems and injuries have affected the entire team. They dont have the personnel they thought that would be able to put the O plan over the top. Sounds like they are going back to plan B now, unfortunately, but the injury problems have left them no other choice.
If the O can at least improve even a little the rest of the year, and we start out a lot healthier next year, things should be ok.

Being a Buff fan doesn't mean you have to genuflect to the head coach. Think of what it does to the reputation of OUR school to have it associated with this father/son deal. Ask your friends in other states what they think of it; they almost all say the same thing "that doesn't sound right!"

True Buff fans should be questioning this decision - not accusing the few who stand up and say "it's not right."

It's not about criticizing the coach or the quarterback. Lots of folks do it, day in, day out, you included. It's about how you do it. It's about obsessing about it. For two seasons now.

You show up here this week and tell all of us what a great fan mommy is. Based on what? He agrees with you? I can give you 14 months of mommy posts that can be summed up in two word: Hawkins sucks. You give me one disingenuous comment. Man, you're either naive or a hypocrite.

You talk about how old you are, how long you've followed CU football as if that gives you some kind of cred. I've got you beat on both accounts. So am I a better fan than you?

you might be a better fan than i am. i don't know - i just believe that with time comes some perspective. i don't know the history of whosyourdaddy and his posts. maybe all he is is a troll? i don't know.

but i believe he is right about cody, and though i have many positive things to say about coach hawk, i do question his judgement around his son and the performance of the O. that is supposed to be his speciality?

i just have high expectations, and i think it is crazy that we are sweating KU and that that's the current state of CU football. i'm saying that other than 90-95 or so, i have heard alot of excuses.

i think bohn has done a good job changing perception, building community, raising money and awareness, but i do not see the change in Ws or in decisions.

rodrigo - will you be satisfied with a 6-6 season this year?

flabuff - if we get 8 this year, bohn is a genius and so is hawk. 7 and i will be more than impressed and patient for another year. i hope you're right. i hope we can feed mangino some buffalo.

Nope. I think it's time CU starts winning games like FSU, and for chrissake, blowing out teams like EW. I think its time CU gives a Kansas or an Oklahoma State all it can handle and maybe even comes away with a win or two, then beats KSU, Iowa State, Nebraska and A&M. Anything less and I'll be sorely disappointed. Operative words: will be and if. There are still seven games to play.

vkberlinn... find a hobby!

You just come off as a cranky pain in the rear who pushes people around on a message board. And now Im sure you'll have some clever well thought out come back for this comment. How is this even a board about the Buffs anymore... its just a buncha people stroking their egos and taking virtual shots at strangers. Pretty damn sad!

For those who want to actually discuss football, I really think we got a good shot at a bounce back game with KU! They have played almost no one and looked like crap while doing it. Get Ballenger some reps for sure, and give the damn ball to Scott, Im sick of seeing Sumler in there! Lets see what this blue chipper can do... does anyone really know why he has been so under-used. His knee was supposed to be 100% against Tex and he only got like 2 carries.

Go Buffs! And with that, lets keep football as the topic. Enough of the petty e-shots and stupid vendettas. But Im sure you will make an attack anyway Berlinn, so go ahead and rip away... Big man on the message board!

vk is a Buff fan, he is just an angry curmudgeon one.

I used to think fish was just another kenny handle, but I have come around to believe he is really a Buffs fan. He's just impatient and too in love with the cut/paste feature (at least earlier on).

Fish, the one major point I disagree with you on is the Cody issue. To say that there is no way a head coach can be objective because his son is a player on his team is just weak. You dismiss any possible reason that Cody has legitimately started last season up until now. Likewise, you fail to give any validity to that fact that the O-line is decimated as the main reason for the offense sputtering.

I do agree that 7+ wins this season should be expected (especially from where we sit now). I also agree that we are not quite ready for prime-time but we should expect ourselves to get there in the next season (2 at the most). That does not mean that Hawk's job is on the line quite yet though.

pgordon
another boss wannabe.

Tough. You make no rules here.

Have been on topic. The topic is the offensive line and the poor play thereof.

...Hawkins was asked after Wednesday's practice why it was necessary to move Goree when players such as redshirt freshmen Shawn Daniels and Ethan Adkins, and walk-ons David Clark and Keenan Stevens are available if something should happen to current starters Devin Head and Blake Behrens.

Nearly all of those players were added to the program during Hawkins' tenure.

"We're just trying to get some help in there," Hawkins said. "We are. We're trying to play the best people in there and trying to get some fortification going on."

Nice confidence in your recruiting eh?

Go buffs.

vk, you have to know that first you recruit, then you develop those players. Just because some kids that were recruited for the offensive line are being bypassed by a D-lineman does not mean they are not good players. It means that the coaches have more faith in Goree at this point in time on the O-line. I read it as a complement to Goree not a slam on the other guys.

As for the question of DS, I have posted on it several times, but I will repeat in brief my take on it. He had to be in the classroom all summer instead of in town practicing and getting in game shape with the other guy and as a result reported for fall camp at a soft 15 pounds over his playing weight. Any of you that have ever been competitive athletes knows what that does to your durability. As a direct result (again my belief) he has been getting dinged up pretty much every game he has played in. Nothing major but exactly the small stuff you would expect for an out of tune athlete. Being dinged up means he can't train full on to catch up and get into top shape so he stays in the limbo he is in. He should be able to heal up in the time between the NU game and any bowl game we get into so we should be able to see the "real Darrell Scott" then and not have to wait until spring ball to see it.

Summler playing has nothing to do with DS not playing. They are completely different types of backs. Summler is used mostly for pass blocking with the occasional carry to keep the defense honest with respects to him. Watch the next game more closely and it will be clear that is how they are using him.

KU is definitely not only winnable but a potential statement game. Even in our banged up state. The Buffs should be expected to win.

Posted by westernbuff1 on October 9, 2008 at 6:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Any player actually playing gets dinged up every game...it's football.
D-I football isn't high school. period. I don't caare how good a guy is at that level playing at this level takes some getting used to. Everything is faster, the guys are bigger, stronger and tougher. DS hasn't had the luxury of a redshirt year practicing against some of the best in the nation. Maturity is a beautiful thing. It will come.
For the naysayers, championship teams are not birthed overnight. Hawkins is building a team. Remember the cupboards were not stocked when he got here. Geez, how many of you guys out there ran before you walked?

I would have thought that a coaching staff worth a damn would have evaluated the players in the spring and not wait until 5 games into the season to figure out that their OGs don't measure up.
Man some of you are Kool Aid drinkers, you will swallow anything that is served to you. "Thefishheadsoup", kudos to you and you are right, this is the new Big 8 plus 4; nothing wrong with demanding consistency and excellence, but some of this bunch doesn't get it and never will. ...........no buff fan i know "loves" mediocrity or seasons at 6-6. coach mac set the bar, slick rick won games and then "abandoned" us, gary could not recruit enough "quality" athletes and was "crucified' by a state and communinty and agendas that no coach should have to deal with and he won us big 12 title..the lack of "true" support from the boulder community and state of colorado is sad compared to lincoln, norman and other programs...the landscape of college football has changed....what has UCLA, texas AM, notre dame, and programs like such done in the last 10 years? changing coaches every 2-3 years will not improve your program...what mike bohn has done is incredible considering that the barnett era almost left us in shambles. we have a quality program with a quality coach, how long did it take coach mac to get us respectable? dont insult buff fans and college football fans with win now mentality or get fired, save that for the sunday teams. maybe if we played "creampuffs" in preseason like nebraska then you folks would be happy. and what really makes you look bad is that when we win games then everybodys happy and the 'bandwagon' is full again...or give up your job and start coaching and then you can get paid for your excellent football knowledge. some of you just are miserable people and some just dont like colorado...either way, thank god MOST buff fans and the decision makers arent so shallow and feeble minded....go buffs--IN HAWK WE TRUST!!

bt. Unsatisfied means unsatisfied

when you spend the summer on mount peek-a-boo, and make your all American true freshman (sophomore to be) a full back and he leaves and now you are unsatisfied with the guards, and you take from your defensive line where you are thin anyway, where the hell where you last spring and in the fall practices.

It appears this coaching staff is a bit entwined by the inability of the QB to run this goofy spread hurry up offense and are grasping.

Okay there are some injuries. Happens every year.

It appears the decision process and whomever is driving it needs to get their act together.

3 and 2 is nice

Go buffs.

It is now on the frigging coaching staff.

Adapt, improvise, kick a**.

This is not WAC football. (for you H it is not Arizona state and the weak pac 10 either)

Play in the community, work the fans, work the donors. But if you let your staff do it and they cannot or do not, the buck stops with you.

Just a little reverse Hawk love.

Go buffs, your game is early, you could hurt me. Do not.,

Ep - I'm still laughing about the "pigeons crapping on his helmet" comment. That was funny.

But none of what I have ever said is a "cheap shot." The Hawkins put themselves in this position. I understand that you may have a different opinion than I do: you seem believe that because Hawk is the coach we should never question him. It's similar to patriotism or religion: you can't seem to accept the fact that Hawk may not the honest-broker that you really hope he is. We just have to agree to disagree. You state your opinion and I'll state mine.

And, finally, once and for all, please rest assured that I am a CU fan. It shouldn't matter, but I live in Boulder; I went to school at CU; I'm a season ticket-holder in more than just football; I was associated with the athletic department as a student and enjoyed every minute of that experience. In short, I'm very proud to be associated with CU, and always will be, but sometimes, as an institution, it makes bad decisions (Ward Churchill comes to mind) and when I see my alma mater do something that I disagree with I have, and will continue, to speak up about it.

Posted by BuffTime on October 10, 2008 at 9:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

When did I ever try to ban someone? I argue people's points. Period. I try to give a detailed reply to something I disagree with that someone else said or I try to answer a question someone else poses. Isn't that kind of what this forum is for? Yeah I get annoyed from time to time with blatant trolls (in this case fools like Ramalambadingdong and a few other short timers).

Everyone doesn't have to agree with me and people can argue the negatives about coaches, players, AD whatever. But if you are going to blast someone at least be reasonable in the critiques. To me it isn't reasonable in today's environment to say that for single reason a kid is playing for his dad that he is only playing because he is the coach's son. That is just a weak statement. Especially so when we all remember how the professional analysts were saying what a great catch we got when Cody surprised everyone and chose CU over Boise State. I remember too well everyone clamoring for COdy to sign with us because we all knew then that the QB situation was very weak at the time. Klatt was leaving and no one had very much faith in B White of Cox (though people, myself included hoped BJax would be good).

So to pipe in now when Cody had a very good season all things considered last year and say he can't play at this level is just non-sense. Saying he had a bad game because he threw X picks or fumbled or missed receivers is one thing but even then it isn't a one person game. Last year a lot of "missed" passes were drops. This year he is off target more. Last year he had a more solid line. This year, not so much. Saying that every team has to deal with injuries is also weak. If OK had the same key people out that CU does and didn't have the luxury of having a full stock behind them people would say they were struggling due to a decimated line. Thing is OK, Texas, Ohio State, USC and those guys NEVER have an empty bench. Even if they have a down year, they still at least have enough bodies. When Hawk got here he had 7 linemen total! He needed about half the next class to be linemen just to fill the void in practice. Now we have bodies yes, but they are still young and raw. People need to have a little perspective and look more to the big picture and stop focusing on the same dumb points all the time.
