Hawkins signs extension

CU coach wants longterm deals for assistants

Colorado coach Dan Hawkins signed a contract extension with modest pay increases and will be the coach in Boudler through the end of the 2012 season.

The new contract became effective July 1 this year and was signed last week. Hawkins will earn $951,720 this season prior to incentives. The new deal includes some changes to his incentive package, including a $50,000 bonus for winning seven games in a season, and a $25,000 bonus for winning eight games.

The contract also includes a buyout clause throughout the term of the deal. Hawkins would have to pay CU $1 million if he left the school for another job before the end of the 2009 season.

If Hawkins was to fulfill every incentive in his contract in the fourth or fifth year of the deal, he would earn approximately $2.5 million.

Good move.... Hawk is a class act

Posted by BuffSteve on October 7, 2008 at 1:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Excellent. Hawk needs to be given extra time to show what he can do with the program. If it doesn't happen in the next 3-4 years then it will be proven on the field; not by us yahoos on these message boards. If he can't get it done by that time then perhaps it's time to move on. My money will be on Hawk getting it done.

And, before all the naysayers start firing their BS let's all take a deep breath and remember where the football program, the athletic department and the University as whole was right before Hawk took over. I don't care if you are Vince Lombardi or Jimmy Johnson; you are not going to work miracles when there was that much garbage to dig out from.

Go Buffs; let's see what Hawk can do!

Nice point BuffSteve. Next time take a deep breath before you type, fish. That way you might make some sense.

if you hadn't been yellig from day one.......
I might "feel your pain"

Bad, bad, day for whosnepafish, I love it...fantastic news for the CU program...as I've demonstrated the past couple of days, the Big 12 programs that stayed with their HC's despite not setting the world on fire in years 1-3 (Pinkel,Gundy,Mangino)are now seeing how wise that was...Rich Brooks in Kentucky would be another good example...bottom line, Hawk and his staff will continue to improve talent and depth and build the program into something special...GO BUFFS!

Posted by extrapoint on October 7, 2008 at 2:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

if nothing else..... from 70-3 to 38-14 is quite an improvement.
Maybe when Hawk wins a big 12 North he wont have to slide in the back door even when the whole division sucked.

Posted by Dizonrocks on October 7, 2008 at 2:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

whosnepafish...let me remind you, the Barnett Era ended on an 0-4 note, outscored 149-32...and his Senior QB left with him, leaving the Buffs without a capable replacement...Brian White couldn't even hold the starting QB job @ Portland State after he left...Bernard Jackson was a last resort who couldn't pass...plus, Barnett exited before Kansas and Mizzu got their acts together...bottom line, Bohn and the administration just made the best move possible,I'm thrilled...

Great news, glad to have coach Hawkins locked up. He fits CU perfectly and I look forward to years of buff football with him at the helm

Posted by Dizonrocks on October 7, 2008 at 3:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

whosnepafish...I agree, when Hawk and his Buffs win the Big 12 Championship, he will be better than the last guy. Why? The Big 12 is much better than it was in 2001, that's not even debatable. I'm thriled that Hawk will get the opportunity to coach the Buffs for 7 years, just like Barnett. I'd be willing to bet, if that's when his run at CU ends, the program will be in considerably better shape than it was when he took over...Barnett left a 3-9 Northwestern program behind and had 5 losing seasons in his 7 years there, including the last two (8-16)...

Great move by Bohn. This program is definitely improving. Year four and five are the real judgemnt years, and there will about alot of people jumping on the Hawk's bandwagon. He and the football team do a great job of representing CU in a positive way, I wish I could say the same about the student section at the games.

Also, its comforting that "whosnepafish" is against Hawkins. That confirms all the more that he is the right man for the job.

who was the last neb coach to win the big 12?? good move bohn---hawk and coach B are class acts.....im hoping 'hothead' pelini gets an extension---any coach that threatens refs, instructs players to play dirty and spit on other players as well as runs across the field and tries to fistfight a 65 yr old kansas state coach deserves to be the nebraska coach for life and be the highest paid coach in the big 12....THE POWER OF RED!!!!! hey dizon, the more you "reality' test nepaclown the dumber he gets, trust me, 62-36 has damaged his poor brain, beyond repair im afraid...maybe in 2015 when the nebs finally win a meaningful game again nepa can feel good about himself again and leave us alone....

.......I TRULY HOPE COACH DAN AND COACH JEFF ARE COLORADO COACHES FOR A LONG TIME.............

Posted by Bufffan62 on October 7, 2008 at 3:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Great news. Usually when a coaching change happens, there is a down period. I am particularly happy with the reduction in negative issues. It is easier to be a proud Buff fan with Hawkins in charge. I can see a big improvement in the program. Better athletes that give us a good chance of accomplishing something good down the road.

Posted by oldbuffer on October 7, 2008 at 3:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm glad that the university, regents, and legislature decided to abandon the knee jerk reaction to the Fairbanks debacle which resulted in only being able to give the coach 1 year contracts. It allows us to attract a coach of Hawk's caliber - and retain him. Now if he can just get something done for his assistants.

Posted by BuffMan6236 on October 7, 2008 at 4:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Awesome!

Thanks for signing on Hawk, and thanks for signing him Bohn.

This will definately help with recruiting and as Dizonrocks correctly says, at some point you have to build a consistent program. Dan Hawkins is a proven program builder and winner and this will put us regularly in the hunt for the Big 12 North and bring us up to competing with UT and OU.

We'll start seeing great progress next year in the record and the product on the field. You can tell its coming together this year, but its not quite there yet, especially with injuries and youth added to the mix.

Good job Bohn. Coach Hawk is the man!

Posted by jakeh_77 on October 7, 2008 at 4:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is good news, but is there a buyout clause? If Hawk leaves does CU get the remaining of his contract paid to them?

Posted by GoBuffs05 on October 7, 2008 at 4:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Great move by Bohn.

jakeh, the buyout clause is $1 million if Hawk leaves before the end of the 2009 season.

Posted by jakeh_77 on October 7, 2008 at 5:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sorry didn't read.

Posted by BEL on October 7, 2008 at 5:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Attaboy, Mike! I am so happy that we will be retaining Hawk for another 5 years.

Jakeh-77, if Hawk voluntarily leaves before the end of the 2009 season, then Hawk must reimburse the university for $1 million. If Hawk leaves voluntarily after the 2009 season or is terminated with cause at any time, then the university owes him nothing. However, if Hawk is terminated without cause at any time, then Hawk and the university will enter into mediation in an attempt to arrive at a settlement. If mediation fails, than Hawk has the option of filing a claim for damages by bringing suit against the university. In this last scenario, a judge and jury will ultimately have to decide and render a final award. However, the final award is capped by a clause in the written contract. The maximum final award amount is calculated by multiplying the maximum yearly award amount (which is probably only half the yearly salary) by the remaining years left in the original contract.

This is a great move by Bohn. Hawk will get it done. Bohn is also a tireless worker, and we need to keep him too. Buff fans, pay no attention to the clowns behind the curtain, you know who they are. They are the ones with no real brain, just a lot of aliases. They live in the land of Oz(borne).

In a report on Hawkins' press conf. today Hawk intimated that Ballenger is likely to see more playing time soon. I think it's hard to knock Cody too much given the youth around him and injuries to the line, but that it would be wise to see if a more mobile, taller and stronger armed QB like Ballenger might fair better given we'll see more blitzing and D-lineman with their hands up to knock down balls. I am not down on Cody, but it behooves the Buffs to take a look at Ballenger I believe.

Posted by OUBuff on October 7, 2008 at 6:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Great move... that means another 4+ years of Nepa & Fish nepotism commentary because I am sure that Hawk will hire on Cody as the Linebacker's coach or something when he is done playing. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean, know what I mean?

Posted by mifrfi on October 7, 2008 at 6:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Right on!! We're lucky to have a coach like Hawk after the debacle Barnett left behind.

Posted by cu_later on October 7, 2008 at 6:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I completely agree that Hawkins deserves an extension.

Barnett proved he could win titles with someone else's players (recruited by Slick Rick), yet also proved he could NOT recruit on an annual basis. In addition, he was in a MUCH better position to attract excellent recruits with a winning record, division titles, conference title, etc. What did he do wich that in 2002-2004? Nothing. That is why we had a 2-10 season in 2006.

Hawkins delivered a top 25 recruiting class this spring, after 2-10 and 6-7 seasons, earned with someone else's players.

Let me give you a comparison - Ron Prince with K-State. Was talking with one of their fans earlier this week. Ron recruited 19 Juco players last spring. Of that number, 11 actually qualified and showed up this fall, and that's with a school with considerably LOWER academic standards than CU.

Would I rather have Hawk, or Ron Prince? Easy answer for me, I'll take my chances with Hawk.

Does this mean we get to bring back baseball?

Posted by reallifeshocker on October 7, 2008 at 7:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

when, after the 2006 season, lew perkins (a.d. of the year) gave mangino a hefty pay raise, and signed him long term, i was skeptical. i was wrong. "hungry" has built the unthinkable, the improbable, the impossible, the very unlikely: a consistant winner in lawrence. not any longer a "weekend off" for opponents in the big-12. and this isn't basketball. hawk will get it done too.....just wait. by the way, i've heard the big joke among the 'husker faithful is the belief that pelini is wearing the same $10 sweatshirt to all home games due to his belief his tenure will be cut so short as to not warrant spending "big bucks" on nice, quality red.

Don't forget Coach Mac received an extension in his 3rd yr after not being overly successful and inheriting a broken down program. Good move and there are better days ahead!

Posted by kylegas83 on October 7, 2008 at 9:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is a good move, you have to give a new coach atleast 6 or 7 years. You look at KU, Mangino is now just starting his seventh season. It takes time and I am not saying KU is considered a powerhouse yet, but they are not that bad and they have showed improvement. When Mangino started KU struggled just to win four games. It takes time.

Go Buffs!!

Good job Bohn. Hawk is probably being looked at by several big schools that need a good coach. The deal secures recruits and gives longevity to the program.

In the near term, we really need to improve at the QB position. I supported Cody last year and early this year but he has disappointed lately. Give another kid a shot, Ballenger, for a series or two. Put Cody on the bench, let him stew and maybe bring his game up. Challenge him. He's not close to being an elite Big 12 QB...he might have the potential but he needs a kick in the butt. Been there myself. Alternate Cody and Ballenger against Kansas, look at the stats and results and make a decision. I remember Dan Fouts at the bowl game last year against Bama, sizing up Ballenger during practice. Fouts said Ballenger looks like a star QB.

My predictions: Buffs beat Kansas. TTech routs NU. OU shows UT the door in a big way. Hookem won't be back for a year, and next September all this crap about nepa, kenny, and all the NU trolls will be silent.

The fridge is full for next year Buff fans. Katoa, Major, the Oline injuries, Polk on red shirt and competition at QB again. It sucks to suck it up this year. We should get to a bowl but 09 will be the year Dan Hawkins makes his mark on BCS football. Keep believing. It takes a few years to rebuild but I like where we are. It only goes up from here.

Those of us old enough to have endured the hard times of CU football from 1978 to 1986 - we all know what it is really like to suffer through with a bad and then a true re-building era. What we are experiencing now is minor pain compared to those days.

Overall, Hawkins is doing a great job. I do think he'll need to give Ballenger or another QB a legitimate shot - but the QB position is not the only weak point in this very young team.

CU will be an incredibly good football team the next 2 years and beyond.

Great move. Hawk love, baby! Dizon is right on. The big 12 is so much better than it was in Barnett's era- TT, Texas, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Mizzou have all gotten way better. Neb and K State have slipped, but there are no gimmes anymore. The base is starting to be built and we all have to be patient, because when these sophomores are seniors, this team will be dangerous. Congrats, Coach Hawk! Now lets get those assistants locked up.

Yeah, Uhuh, in fact I just heard that all the "Big" schools just held a conference and they came to a consensus that the 11 and 13 coach at CU has a target on his back. In fact, they said that if he can take a school like CU in 3 years to a respectable 11 and 13 record, just think what he could do a "big" school...lol

STOP comparing Hawk to Mac. This is ridiculous and outrageous! Mac came up from under Bo Schem. and a rich tradition at Michigan. Hawk came from Willamete and Boise State. I knew Mac and Hawk ain't no Mac and Bohn certainly aint no Marolt. Come on Kyle put your Neil goggles away.
