Behrens ready for return home
Buff grew up in Nebraska, but chose CU over NU
From the neck down, Jake Behrens is a prototypical fullback.

He's a 6-foot-0, 235-pound, tackling dummy who has a special place in Dan Hawkins' heart because Colorado's head coach used to play the position back in the day.
"He coaches us up sometimes and gives us advice," Behrens said. "But a lot of it just comes down to wanting to hit that guy harder than he wants to hit you."
One week from today Behrens -- who grew up in Omaha -- will get a chance to hit some familiar faces when CU plays Nebraska at Memorial Stadium.
Gary Barnett and assistant coach Shawn Simms followed the recruiting trail into enemy territory to court Behrens after his junior season at Millard North High School. Bill Callahan didn't show up until his senior year when he was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Nebraska after rushing for 1,203 yards and nine touchdowns with 60 tackles.
Behrens decided to take the road less traveled and came to Boulder. He is the first Nebraska high school recruit to sign with the Buffs and actually enroll at CU since Dean Davis (Scottsbluff) in 1984.
"I wanted to explore all of my options and kind of get out of Nebraska in a way, too. I had been there my whole life," Behrens said. "CU is agreat school and there is great tradition here and I loved it out here."
Buffs fans would say: Smart guy. And in this case they would be right.
Behrens -- who boasted a perfect 4.0 grade point average in high school (scoring 1280 on the SAT) and piled up 24 college credits before his first practice in 2005 -- plans to leave CU with a bachelor's degree in business finance and a master's in accounting.
The redshirt junior attended a finance seminar in London, which gave him a chance to talk to some of the world's prominent economists and hedge fund managers.
So, future Wall Street wizard, when is the stock market going to stop hemorrhaging?
"It's not too bad for me. I want it to be rock bottom once I get out of college," Behrens said. "But it's got to go up sooner or later. We've got some problems obviously that have to be fixed."
CU's offensive numbers aren't much better. The team is last in the Big 12 in scoring (19.2 ppg.), 10th in rushing (132.0 ypg.) and 11th in passing (189.0 ypg.).
Behrens, like the coaching staff, believes the program is destined for great things next season with a healthier offensive line and more experienced versions of Darrell Scott, Rodney Stewart and Demetrius Sumler following him into the line of scrimmage.
"We've been able to move the ball on almost everybody and we have just been killing ourselves on a lot of drives with a penalty here or a dropped pass there," Behrens said. "I think maybe a little bit more experience will help us so we can finish drives and do it every time without having that one play killing a drive."
Buff quarterback Cody Hawkins is a believer in Behrens' abilities.
"He's an interesting type of fullback," Hawkins said. "He's very athletic. He can make a lot of plays and he's strong enough and physical enough that you can do the smashmouth stuff and you can get creative with him. I think he's a guy who has an awesome attitude about it. He's in there always learning and always doing what the coaches ask of him."
Behrens has 12 receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns this season. But despite Hawkins' affinity for the position, not a single carry during his CU career.
How sweet would it be for this Omaha kid to break off a big one at Memorial Stadium?
"I just do what I'm told and if I'm lucky maybe they'll throw something in for me some time," Behrens said. "I'll just try and make the most of the opportunities when I do touch the ball."

Yeah - congrats Jake, a Couple of degrees from a great, top-notch school to go along with a very well played football career is excellent!! We are proud of you in Buffnation!!! I'd rather have 1 coach Hawkins (who can discipline his players - not that Beherens was even in that category) and a team full of Jake Beherens's than 1 Coach Osborne and 1 Lawrence Phillips on my team. Tell us again coach O - what part of your desk did you hide that gun in before you bailed Lawrence Phillips out of jail after he beat the f**k out of his girlfriend and dragged him down the stairs by her hair?... Was that a hard decision, or was it harder to suspend him for 2 games????? Maybe 'nepa' can tell us the truth LOL...

All that I am wondering is if Hawk will remind the guys about the 'Sal is Dead - Go Big Red' Signs that the 'classiest fans' in NCAA sports put up all along I-76, I-80, and the Nebraska Fieldhouse after the Buffs beat the corn for that NC that KLASSY coach Osborne voted against LOL... You stay classy Nebraska - nothing like making fun of a team who's quarterback and new father just died of stomach cancer after we whooped your a$$ for a National Championship... Wish we were all Fuskers.

Great attitude, and I'm glad Hawk has tossed the ball his way twelve times! A carry back home against Nebraska would be pretty sweet too if he could make the endzone.

Jake,
Thanks for coming to Boulder and making the character of our team and University stronger - it's been a pleasure cheering for you and here's wishing you continued success.
As for these posters, reading nepabuff's words and it becomes apparent why you decided to leave ignorant Nebraska hate-mongers like him behind.
Football is a game, and at Colorado you will find there is more to life than sports. Unfortunately for the majority of those in the Cornhusker state this lesson is yet to be learned...

One week to go until the Clash with the Corn!
What say we try and keep in light today? How's about some good (clean) Nebraska jokes?
Some of the best I've read and heard:
Did you hear about the Cornhusker who put snow tires on his car? They melted.
Nebraska's greatest invention? The solar-powered flashlight.
What is the Nebraska state tree? The telephone pole.
Of course, there are the "N" for "Nowledge" on the helmets type of jokes, and plenty of ones reminding us of the glory days of Lawrence Phillips, et al.
What do you call a Nebraska crime ring? A huddle.
What do you call a Cornhusker in a three piece suit? Defendant.
Okay, nepa, let loose with the hippie, druggie, drop out Boulder jokes. It's okay, we can take it.
(My personal favorite: What does Colorado have that Nebraska doesn't have? Everything!)
Go Buffs!

how do you get a Nebraska cheerleader on an elevator?
Grease her hips and toss in a twinkie.
Why is Memorial Stadium artificial sport grass? So the cheerleaders don't graze at half time.

Hey nepabuff, my friends and I have been looking for an interesting subject to make our next documentary on. We actually won some awards for our last one, which was about a man convicted for a violent hate crime who for religious reasons believed he was in the right for doing it.
As interesting a subject as he was, I'm thinking you would be even better - a self-loathing internet addict who lives for pretending he's an impartial observer in order to further his own hate-filled propaganda towards a college football team.
Never mind the fact that this team consists of 18-22 year old young adults who besides playing football are also attempt to earn an education and live on their own for the first time.
Never mind the fact that you are sitting alone in your pajamas waiting for the next post to be posted on this site so you can refute it's existence and once again confirm your reason for living.
But here's the thing, nepabuff, and I see it as the grand finale of the film: As you work yourself further and further into maliciously trying to undermine a group of hardworking kids and the friends and family who support them, you fail to notice the respect of your own team's fan base leaving you.
So as the camera slowly pans away from you sitting at your computer, we cut to scenes of real human beings - both Coloradoans and Nebraskans - who realize that college football is just a game and the men and women who take part in it do it for the love of the game and for the enjoyment of us who watch them. As they go on to live their lives with love and respect for their friends and rivals, you finally realize that your life has become meaningless and nobody really cares about you. Lost and alone, you turn to the only thing left that you know how to do - spew hateful filth anonymously over the Internet.

LOL
all he has to offer are stats, articles he finds on the net and smarmy negative statements based on the same.
I doubt if he has ever held a football.

EP - great timing on the skiing joke.
Speaking of Nebraska jokes and skiing, ever been to 'Nebraski'? it's really there, just outside Omaha. I nearly died the first time I saw it (no, I didn't take a run :) )

Dr tom - you've never talked football on this site either. Just one liner smack talk.
So - do you have a real discussion about next week's game? What do you think of our boy Behren's? I liked the article. He's a solid player and I hope he gets a few touches next week, but I'll be just as happy if he clears a lane or two for Scott and Sumler.

One more thing, and I'm done posting for today (way over the quota) - you pick on Montana for starting the joke thread, but he's about the most amazing fan of any school there is.
He maintains a sweet website.
He flies to most (if not all) of the home games from Montana.
Hard to say anything negative about a fan like that.

...i dont know dr tom, i find it kind of funny that a team has a coach that threatens players with bodily harm to improve performance, a coach that instructs "spitting" during practice and a coach that one time ran across the field after the kansas state game and tried to beat up 65 yr old bill synder--"put em coach, put em up!!!".....65-51 is pretty funny also......dumba** nebraska fans "bashing" the colorado football program, now that is funny----i guess beating kansas state and baylor makes husker fans really confident....

hinfinityl,
that was a fascinating read on the nepa. I actually wished, though, that you had asked him politely and under the guise that it was a "documentary on passionate football fans, who write intelligent posts to online football articles". If you had told him you were filming a number of fans (and then maybe done some fake interviews right in front of him to lure him out of his shell), youcould have asked him straight up questions on what he thinks. That film would have been guaranteed gold. A friend of mine once filmed a guy who was a true paranoid. The film was poignant, sad, irreverent and funny all at once. Money.

Thanks, goalline, for those kind words ....
I am a big Buff fan, like most of us on this site. That doesn't mean we see the world through rose colored glasses, as our nepa-like detractors contend. We see the struggles on the field, and suffer with the rest of the Buff nation through tough losses. We'll see the team through the hard times, and revel in the good times.
That's the magic of college sports. You never know what will happen week to week, so we keep on coming back!
(By the way, anyone want to sit in for me next Tuesday at our local Lions club meeting here in Bozeman? Losing to Montana State in basketball, on top of the 2006 debacle ... they're going to enjoy giving me grief - this same group met me with Duck calls after CU lost to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.)
Oh, well. You can't dish it out if you're not willing to take it!
Get 'em next Friday! Go Buffs!

Great story. Unfortunately, the idiot Callahan was too late to get Jake. Good for you Buffs for landing him. Disappointing that if any of his family/friends wear red to watch him play in Boulder, they'll get spit and urinated on by the classless CU fans.
Too bad you didn't beat TAMU. Now you'll have to spend all winter chasing buffaloes instead of playing football.

dougneb,
I hate to have facts get in the way of a good rant, but your comment about putting the Buffs back in their place "in the Big 12 basement", doesn't ring true.
Colorado has never finished alone in the Big 12 "basement". In fact, the Buffs, unlike the Cornhuskers, never finished in the basement of the Big Eight or the Big Seven, either (only Colorado and Oklahoma can make such a claim).
Okay, back to the rants ....

One theory on the "Sal is Dead" signs is it was CU fans who put them up to incite the fans before the game and motivate the team.
- Nepa - once again proving your ignorance... The signs were also being waved all throughout the fieldhouse by KnU students - your AD was in attendance and did NOTHING to enforce the signs being taken down, students ejected, etc... Say what you want about Buff Students, but at least when the AD kicks them out - for good reasons - they go. At least we have the guts to kick people who act classless out of the games... You can't say the same, you piece of waste...

I've only once responded to these message boards. I live in Boise (so am interested in Coach Hawkins and his son) and am a Nebraska fan, so, naturally, Colorado -- and all Big 12 -- football interests me. I understand the nature of the exchanges on these message boards and that they represent only a tiny minority of the fan bases for both schools, thank goodness. But the annually recurring post (this time by JAWS) about the alleged "Sal is Dead, Go Big Red" sign in extremely disturbing. Repeating it is almost as sick, JAWS. Can you or anyone provide a link that provides some proof of this? And even if it is true, it's a loathsome thing to say and certainly does not represent the view of the vast majority of Husker fans. If it was done, I apologize on behalf of Nebraska fans, to Sal and his family. I want to enjoy the Colorado-Nebraska rivalry as much as I did NU and Oklahoma. But posts like that make it very difficult. It's time to let Sal rest in peace and not bring this up every year.

fadness - just google the phrase: 'sal is dead go big red pics' and you will be provided with plenty of links to the pics, etc... For a while Sports illustrated had the article in its' archives, it was written by Rick Reilly... I appreciate you making an educated post and asking for clarrification and evidence. You truly are a classy Nebraska fan, as most are. I have been treated with respect from 95+% of the NU fans every time that I go to Lincoln, and I try and reciprocate the feelings to your fans who come to Boulder to watch a fun rivalry game in a beautiful setting. I will be the first to apologize to the NU fans who are treated poorly in Boulder as well - it's not cool or right. As far as my 'constant' reminding of the 'Sal is Dead' signs - I remind people so that they remember how disgusting that situation was... and the fact that the AD did NOTHING to enforce your program being considered 'classy.' It was sick!!

Thanks, Jaws, for your post. I did as you said and came up with lots of blog statements about it, even from as far away as Clemson. So I'll grant it probably was real. I'm glad that you acknowledge that Nebraska fans on the whole, I would say about 99.9 percent -- would find a comment like that absolutely disgusting. I don't know how the AD reacted, I can't imagine any professional condoning it. So let's drop it, OK?
I love football, I love Big 12 football. Hawk is a class act and will return Colorado to the kind of days it had under Coach McCartney -- another class act. So, Buff fans, be patient with him. I'm truly pining for the days when the CU-Nebraska game on the day after Thanksgiving is the game that decides the Big 12 North title and the eventual conference champion. I acknowledge that probably won't be the case year in and year out given the increasing parity in college football. (Witness Troy St. AT LSU last weekend.) Good luck next Friday, and, like you, I'm confident that Buff fans will be treated well by the vast majority of Husker fans. No doubt, they'll be some jerks in the mix. There always are.

- Really??? Did I bring up Sal's name? No amigo, that was YOUR fans - re-read the above post by both myself as well as gene.fadness - and you will see WHO brought up the player of a young man who was getting his education, playing football for a National Championship team and died way to young from a disease that was excruciating and miserably painful and caused him to pass away WAY TOO EARLY... Was it me? No - it was your Husker fans.. Think idiot, think!!

I am a liar? - did you read the post by your fellow husker fan (although a very classy fan) gene.fadness? He took the time to verify that what I said was EXACTLY correct. Even though the repulsive fans who put up the signs did what they did, they represented the vast minority of Neb fans who tend to be classy. Just because you don't like the facts doesn't mean that it didn't happen. I am not happy that CU students threw oranges at NU players in the late 80's and early 90's - but I can admit that it happened ... Makes me very upset as a loyal Buff fan that our students/fans would do that, but at least I can be honest about my programs' stupidity. Check your facts... DR!!!!

Why is it that every team in this beloved BIG 12 conference has a problem with Buff? I don't get it. RED gets along with every other team. Only Buff is a problem. Actually, like I've said many times before...........the ONLY reason we are here is to fight back is Because, RED knows that BROWN knows, after years of abuse at the hands of RED, finally knew that it couldn't be done on the field so they took it off the field and into the stands and the parking lot......they even started taking it out on their own people..........Yellow Jacketed Security Guards......Does that ring any bells?

Why would every other team from the Big 12 have a problem with the Buffs? Hmmmm, let's see - Ames, Iowa; Manhattan, Kansas; Columbia, Missouri; Lincoln, Nebraska... BOULDER, COLORADO!
There's so much talk about how CU doesn't travel well, but can you really blame us? Fans from other schools GET to come to Boulder, but we HAVE to travel to these miserable little towns. The only city in the conference that can hold a candle to Boulder is Austin.
Why are all you Husker fans so much more agitated these days? It's simple, football season is almost over and you've got nothing left to look forward to. We, on the other hand, are breaking out the skis and snowboards, attending professional sporting events, having dinner in fine restaurants and generally enjoying everything our fine city has to offer!

I find it interesting some people assume they are somehow superior by where they live and not by the type of person they are and what they contribute to society.
No doubt that Boulder is great place to live (politics and other issues aside) but to those who are so arrogant to maintain that only Boulder offers a meaning way of life....well, you are either incredibly stupid or simply grossly misinformed.

Ah so
mr strawmaninsanity
you would be correct about someone being "incredibly stupid or grossly misinformed" thinking Boulder was the ONLY place.
However, I dont recall anyone saying Boulder was the ONLY place. The smack talk has merely compared Boulder to Lincoln.
So are you, as you have put it.... "so arrogant" or are you just trolling?

Not true - regulars to these boards seem to bash any big 12 city as "unliveable" compared to BOulder.
I lived in Boulder for 5 years during McCartney's heyday and now live elsewhere - you couldn't get me to move back to Boulder for anything and I have my reasons.
My question is how many of the smack talkers on this board have ever lived in Lincoln? I suspect the answer is none.

Dear BUFFIECHIP FANS-Guess you can AGAIN count on Hawk to find a way to choke.Huskers should probably have their third team in by the second quarter.Way too bad it's not being played in BUFFIECHIP land this year, your student section won't have the opportunity to conduct themselves like little six year old dorks,as usual.

Omaha is a way better town than Lincoln.
I don't live in Boulder, but I've been to every Big 12 town, and Boulder is by far the best place to visit. One would assume if you visit a place, look around and talk to people, one could get a good idea of what it's like to live there.
It's not even a contest.

Toss up between Boulder and Austin
Being an outdoor rec fool, of course I'm going to pick Boulder. Austin, however is the best music scene in the country outside of N'awlins.
3rd place goes to Columbia. We always managed to hook up with some nice Stevens girls when "doing" an away game there.
Lincoln actually comes in 4th for me. The in laws have a farm about 2 hours North with some of the best pheasant hunting in the country.
The rest of em you can shuffle and deal pretty much any way you want.

Florida St. Offensive line, 3 freshman and two sophomores, pretty impressive coaching.
Any more excuses for the Buff's OL, other than poor coaching and a terrible offensive coordinator?
There will be changes on the staff, or a big change will be made at the top if WINNING in 2009 doesn't happen.
Happy thanksgiving to all, beat the corndoggies,
Go Buffs!!!

Not very funny that CSU is now bowl eligible, and CU is NOT and is a long shot at best.
Quite a year Hawkins, one of the few teams in the country that got worse as the year went on!
the koolaid drinkers still love ya and your Hawk love!!!
Go Buffs.

Agree its between Austin and Boulder for city though for Football atmosphere Lincoln might be tops in Big 12. I found Boulder to have liberalism juxtaposed against close-mindedness, sometimes in the same person.

Hey Buff Nation,
All that counts is SCOREBOARD -- 5-1...that's 5 national titles to your 1 (and yes that's the 1 that you needed a 5th down to make happen). You'll need more than 5th downs on Friday.
And if all you've got is Lawrence Phillips, we'll take it...how bout Murder 1 CU fans-- what's up, RAE CARRUTH???
By the way, how's the RAPEcruiting coming??
Go Big RED!!!!
